    Introduction Tumor necrosis factor- (TNF) blockers are efficient in the treatment of autoimmune disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis, but can induce CNS adverse effects including retrobulbar optic neuritis or aggravation of multiple sclerosis. Observation We report a case of progressive demyelinating polyneuropathy after initiation of Adalimumab (Humira®). Corticosteroid and intravenous immunoglobulins were ineffective but the neuropathy improved within six months after adalimunab discontinuation. Discussion This case, and other reports recently published suggest that anti-TNF alpha drugs can induce demyelinating neuropathy. Conclusion Clinicians should be on the lookout for signs evocating neuropathy in patients given anti TNF alpha

    Return Periods of Extreme Sea Levels: The Exceedance Probability Method

    Practical application of the Exceedance Probability Method of Middleton and Thompson (J. Geophys. Res., V ol.91, 1986, pp. 11707-11716) to the estimation of extreme sea levels is considered in detail, for ports where tidal amplitudes dominate surge. Data from Sydney (Australia) are used to illustrate the method. Direct use of the histogram of tidal residuals, instead of fitting a model to it, is discussed, and the limitations are pointed out. Graphical fitting of the sum of two normal distributions to the histogram is also discussed. A method is given for including a trend in mean sea level. A simplified method of checking if tidal amplitudes dominate the surge is given in an appendix

    A Child with Resistance to Thyroid Hormone without Thyroid Hormone Receptor Gene Mutation: A 20-Year Follow-Up

    We report here the 20-year follow-up study of a male subject diagnosed at 15 months of age as a sporadic case of pituitary resistance to thyroid hormone on the combination of clinical hyperthyroidism, elevated serum thyroid hormone (TH) levels and inappropriate thyrotropin (TSH). On d-thyroxine (D-T4) therapy from 30 months of age to 12.5 years, hyperactivity and hyperthyroid signs and symptoms as well as growth abnormalities improved, serum l-thyroxine (L-T4) enantiomer normalized, and basal and stimulated TSH decreased significantly without complete suppression. After 8 years off D-T4, at 20 years of age, clinical status was normal despite persisting high TH levels and inappropriate TSH. Evolution of serum markers of TH action and echocardiography measurements followed up from 15 months to 20 years of age either in basal condition or on triiodothyronine (T3), as well as the sequential determination of bone mineral density suggest differences in the tissue responses to T3: normal in bone with a high remodelling rate, heterogeneity for various hepatic markers, and decreased at heart level. No mutations were found in the coding sequence of TRβ1, TRβ2, TRα1, RXRγ, SMRT, NCoR1, and NCoA1. In this patient the putative long-term effects of the persisting high bone resorption are unknown

    Prehistoric exploitation of minerals resources. Experimentation and use-wear analysis of grooved stone tools from Grotta della Monaca (Calabria, Italy)

    The Calabria region of Southern Italy is rich in mineralisation. Unfortunately, no consistent data are available about mineral exploitation in the later prehistoric periods. The Grotta della Monaca mine in Calabria is a prehistoric site that is characterised by the mineralisation of iron ores (such as goethite) and copper carbonates (malachite and azurite). For this reason, the site provides an exceptional opportunity to study a prehistoric mine in which several minerals were exploited during the late Neolithic and early Chalcolithic. In this study, we present the results of an experimental protocol and use-wear analysis conducted using macro-lithic tool replicas to extract mineral resources. The experimental test aimed at reconstructing the function of grooved stone tools found at Grotta della Monaca. Use-wear observation, through a combined low- and high-power approach on experimental and archaeological objects, allowed us to define different extraction techniques and methods of mineral treatments. These data enhance our understanding and reconstruction of the chaîne opératoires, economic choices, and cultural aspects that characterised prehistoric miners in Southern Italy

    Evidence of triggered star formation in G327.3-0.6. Dust-continuum mapping of an infrared dark cloud with P-ArT\'eMiS

    Aims. Expanding HII regions and propagating shocks are common in the environment of young high-mass star-forming complexes. They can compress a pre-existing molecular cloud and trigger the formation of dense cores. We investigate whether these phenomena can explain the formation of high-mass protostars within an infrared dark cloud located at the position of G327.3-0.6 in the Galactic plane, in between two large infrared bubbles and two HII regions. Methods: The region of G327.3-0.6 was imaged at 450 ? m with the CEA P-ArT\'eMiS bolometer array on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment telescope in Chile. APEX/LABOCA and APEX-2A, and Spitzer/IRAC and MIPS archives data were used in this study. Results: Ten massive cores were detected in the P-ArT\'eMiS image, embedded within the infrared dark cloud seen in absorption at both 8 and 24 ?m. Their luminosities and masses indicate that they form high-mass stars. The kinematical study of the region suggests that the infrared bubbles expand toward the infrared dark cloud. Conclusions: Under the influence of expanding bubbles, star formation occurs in the infrared dark areas at the border of HII regions and infrared bubbles.Comment: 4 page
