Strings in gravity with torsion
A theory of gravitation in 4D is presented with strings used in the material
action in spacetime. It is shown that the string naturally gives rise to
torsion. It is also shown that the equation of motion a string follows from the
Bianchi identity, gives the identical result as the Noether conservation laws,
and follows a geodesic only in the lowest order approximation. In addition, the
conservation laws show that strings naturally have spin, which arises not from
their motion but from their one dimensional structure.Comment: 16 page

Opportunities for and challenges to further reductions in the âspecific powerâ rating of wind turbines installed in the United States
A wind turbineâs âspecific powerâ rating relates its capacity to the swept area of its rotor in terms of Watt per square meter. For a given generator capacity, specific power declines as rotor size increases. In land-rich but capacity-constrained wind power markets, such as the United States, developers have an economic incentive to maximize megawatt-hours per constrained megawatt, and so have favored turbines with ever-lower specific power. To date, this trend toward lower specific power has pushed capacity factors higher while reducing the levelized cost of energy. We employ geospatial levelized cost of energy analysis across the United States to explore whether this trend is likely to continue. We find that under reasonable cost scenarios (i.e. presuming that logistical challenges from very large blades are surmountable), low-specific-power turbines could continue to be in demand going forward. Beyond levelized cost of energy, the boost in market value that low-specific-power turbines provide could become increasingly important as wind penetration grows
Effects of a torsion field on Big Bang nucleosynthesis
In this paper it is investigated whether torsion, which arises naturally in
most theories of quantum gravity, has observable implications for the Big Bang
nucleosynthesis. Torsion can lead to spin flips amongst neutrinos thus turning
them into sterile neutrinos. In the early Universe they can alter the helium
abundance which is tightly constrained by observations. Here I calculate to
what extent torsion of the string theory type leads to a disagreement with the

We prove uniform bounds on moments X_a = \sum_{m}{m^a f_m(x,t)} of the
Smoluchowski coagulation equations with diffusion, valid in any dimension. If
the collision propensities \alpha(n,m) of mass n and mass m particles grow more
slowly than (n+m)(d(n) + d(m)), and the diffusion rate d(\cdot) is
non-increasing and satisfies m^{-b_1} \leq d(m) \leq m^{-b_2} for some b_1 and
b_2 satisfying 0 \leq b_2 < b_1 < \infty, then any weak solution satisfies X_a
\in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d \times [0,T]) \cap L^1(\mathbb{R}^d \times [0,T])
for every a \in \mathbb{N} and T \in (0,\infty), (provided that certain moments
of the initial data are finite). As a consequence, we infer that these

Effect of delayed acquisition times on Gadolinium-enhanced MRI of the presumably normal canine brain
A delay in imaging following intravenous contrast medium administration has been recommended to reduce misdiagnoses. However, the normal variation of contrast enhancement in dogs following a delay has not been characterized. Contrast enhanced MR imaging of 22 dogs was assessed, in terms of identification of normal anatomic structures, to investigate the variation associated with 10 minute delay between contrast medium administration and imaging. All dogs had a normal brain MR imaging study and unremarkable CSF. Specific ROIs were assessed both objectively, using computer software, and subjectively using three observers. Mean contrast enhancement greater than 10% was seen in the pituitary gland, choroid plexus, meninges, temporal muscle, trigeminal nerve and the trigeminal nerve root. Structures with an active blood-brain-barrier had minimal contrast enhancement (<6%). Enhancing structures had significantly more contrast enhancement at t=1min versus t=10min, except in temporal muscle, the trigeminal nerve and the trigeminal nerve root. Inter-observer agreement was moderate to good in favor of the initial post contrast T1w sequence. The observers found either no difference or poor agreement in identification of the non-vascular structures. Intra-observer agreement was very good with all vascular structures and most non-vascular structures. A degree of meningeal enhancement was a consistent finding. The initial acquisition had higher enhancement characteristics and observer agreement for some structures; however, contrast-to-noise was comparable in the delayed phase or not significantly different. We provide baseline references and suggest that the initial T1w post contrast sequence is preferable but not essential should a delayed post contrast T1w sequence be performed

It investigates the potential for recording and editing video clips from online sources and digitalising clips from analogue recordings and reflects on the current status quo regarding the complex copyright regulations in this area. It describes two pilot self-access programmes based on video clips which were undertaken with University College Chester undergraduates and reflects on the value of the experience for students in developing a wide range of language skills as well as independent learning skills using their feedback on the experience
