    Diodes with Breakdown Voltages Enhanced by the Metal-Insulator Transition of LaAlO3_3-SrTiO3_3 Interfaces

    Using the metal-insulator transition that takes place as a function of carrier density at the LaAlO3_3-SrTiO3_3 interface, oxide diodes have been fabricated with room-temperature breakdown voltages of up to 200 V. With applied voltage, the capacitance of the diodes changes by a factor of 150. The diodes are robust and operate at temperatures up to 270 C

    Flux flow of Abrikosov-Josephson vortices along grain boundaries in high-temperature superconductors

    We show that low-angle grain boundaries (GB) in high-temperature superconductors exhibit intermediate Abrikosov vortices with Josephson cores, whose length ll along GB is smaller that the London penetration depth, but larger than the coherence length. We found an exact solution for a periodic vortex structure moving along GB in a magnetic field HH and calculated the flux flow resistivity RF(H)R_F(H), and the nonlinear voltage-current characteristics. The predicted RF(H)R_F(H) dependence describes well our experimental data on 7∘7^{\circ} unirradiated and irradiated YBa2Cu3O7YBa_2Cu_3O_7 bicrystals, from which the core size l(T)l(T), and the intrinsic depairing density Jb(T)J_b(T) on nanoscales of few GB dislocations were measured for the first time. The observed temperature dependence of Jb(T)=Jb0(1−T/Tc)2J_b(T)=J_{b0}(1-T/T_c)^2 indicates a significant order parameter suppression in current channels between GB dislocation cores.Comment: 5 pages 5 figures.     The moral muteness of managers: an Anglo-American phenomenon? German and British managers and their moral reasoning about environmental sustainability in business

    Several studies in the Anglo-American context have indicated that managers present themselves as morally neutral employees who act only in the best interest of the company by employing objective skills. The reluctance of managers to use moral arguments in business is further accentuated in the now common argument presented as a neutral fact that the company must always prioritise shareholder value. These and other commercial aims are seen as an objective reality in business, whilst questions about sustainability, environmental problems or fair trade are seen as emotional or moral ones; a phenomenon described as ‘moral muteness’. This research explores whether this ‘moral muteness’ is an Anglo-American phenomenon and/or whether managers in other countries - in this case Germany - might express themselves in a different way. The focus is on moral arguments around environmental sustainability and the implications of this study for cross-cultural management. This article is based on a qualitative, comparative cross-cultural study of British and German managers in the Food Retail and Energy Sectors. In line with the studies mentioned above, British managers placed a strong emphasis on their moral neutrality. In contrast, German managers tended to use moral arguments when discussing corporate greening, often giving such arguments more weight than financial arguments. Overall, the study suggests that the ‘moral muteness’ of managers is a British phenomenon and quite distinct from the German approach.     Chiral d+is superconducting state in the two dimensional t-t' Hubbard model

    Applying the recently developed variational approach to Kohn-Luttinger superconductivity to the t-t' Hubbard model in two dimensions, we have found, for sizeable next-nearest neighbor hopping, an electron density controlled quantum phase transition between a d-wave superconducting state close to half filling and an s-wave superconductor at lower electron density. The transition occurs via an intermediate time reversal breaking d+is superconducting phase, which is characterized by nonvanishing chirality and density-current correlation. Our results suggest the possibility of a bulk time reversal symmetry breaking state in overdoped cuprates

    What limits supercurrents in high temperature superconductors? A microscopic model of cuprate grain boundaries

    The interface properties of high-temperature cuprate superconductors have been of interest for many years, and play an essential role in Josephson junctions, superconducting cables, and microwave electronics. In particular, the maximum critical current achievable in high-Tc wires and tapes is well known to be limited by the presence of grain boundaries, regions of mismatch between crystallites with misoriented crystalline axes. In studies of single, artificially fabricated grain boundaries the striking observation has been made that the critical current Jc of a grain boundary junction depends exponentially on the misorientation angle. Until now microscopic understanding of this apparently universal behavior has been lacking. We present here the results of a microscopic evaluation based on a construction of fully 3D YBCO grain boundaries by molecular dynamics. With these structures, we calculate an effective tight-binding Hamiltonian for the d-wave superconductor with a grain boundary. The critical current is then shown to follow an exponential suppression with grain boundary angle. We identify the buildup of charge inhomogeneities as the dominant mechanism for the suppression of the supercurrent.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure

    Virological failure after 1 year of first-line ART is not associated with HIV minority drug resistance in rural Cameroon

    Objectives The aim of this study was to describe clinical and virological outcomes in therapy-naive HIV-1-positive patients treated in a routine ART programme in rural Cameroon. Methods In a prospective cohort, 300 consecutive patients starting first-line ART were enrolled and followed for 12 months. Among 238 patients with available viral load data at Month 12, logistic regression was used to analyse risk factors for virological failure (≄1000 HIV RNA copies/mL) including clinical, immunological and virological parameters, as well as data on drug adherence. Population sequencing was performed to detect the presence of drug-resistance mutations in patients with virological failure at Month 12; minority drug-resistance mutations at baseline were analysed using next-generation sequencing in these patients and matched controls. Results At Month 12, 38/238 (16%) patients experienced virological failure (≄1000 HIV RNA copies/mL). Patients with virological failure were younger, had lower CD4 cell counts and were more often WHO stage 3 or 4 at baseline. Sixty-three percent of patients with virological failure developed at least one drug-resistance mutation. The M184V (n = 18) and K103N (n = 10) mutations were most common. At baseline, 6/30 patients (20%) experiencing virological failure and 6/35 (17%) matched controls had evidence of minority drug-resistance mutations using next-generation sequencing (P = 0.77). Lower CD4 count at baseline (OR per 100 cells/mm3 lower 1.41, 95% CI 1.02-1.96, P = 0.04) and poorer adherence (OR per 1% lower 1.05, 95% CI 1.02-1.08, P < 0.001) were associated with a higher risk of virological failure. Unavailability of ART at the treatment centre was the single most common cause for incomplete adherence. Conclusions Virological failure after 1 year of ART was not associated with minority drug resistance at baseline but with incomplete adherence.     Evidence of Doping-Dependent Pairing Symmetry in Cuprate Superconductors

    Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) studies reveal long-range spatial homogeneity and predominantly dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2}-pairing spectral characteristics in under- and optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7−ή\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} superconductors, whereas STS on YBa2(Cu0.9934Zn0.0026Mg0.004)3O6.9\rm YBa_2(Cu_{0.9934}Zn_{0.0026}Mg_{0.004})_3O_{6.9} exhibits {\it microscopic} spatial modulations and strong scattering near the Zn or Mg impurity sites, together with global suppression of the pairing potential. In contrast, in overdoped (Y0.7Ca0.3)Ba2Cu3O7−ή\rm (Y_{0.7}Ca_{0.3})Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}, (dx2−y2+s)(d_{x^2-y^2}+s)-pairing symmetry is found, suggesting significant changes in the superconducting ground-state at a critical doping value.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     Smooth metric measure spaces, quasi-Einstein metrics, and tractors

    We introduce the tractor formalism from conformal geometry to the study of smooth metric measure spaces. In particular, this gives rise to a correspondence between quasi-Einstein metrics and parallel sections of certain tractor bundles.     Effect of mesoscopic inhomogeneities on the critical current of bulk melt-textured YBCO

    The downsizing 211-inclusions and an increase of their density leads to rise in mean critical current value in Y-based melt textured material. Very often 211-inclusion are spread in the material volume non-homogeneous, with typical scale 50 - 100 micrometer. Therefore it is difficult to find the real correlation between local critical current and the inclusions distribution. We performed a study of a local critical current using modified magneto-optic technique on a melt-textured YBaCuO ceramic, found the areas with constant current and studied the real structure of the material in the areas, inclusions distribution and their sizes, by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. The estimation of a pinning in these places, by taking into account the amount of inclusions and the length of their boundaries, and comparison with the value of local critical current reveals a strait correlation between the density of inclusions and the current but shows remarkable quantitative disagreement.Comment: PDF (8 pages, 4 figures

    Degenerate ground state in a mesoscopic YBaCuO grain boundary Josephson junction

    We have measured the current-phase relationship (CPR) of symmetric 45 degree YBaCuO grain boundary Josephson junctions. Substantial deviations of the CPR from conventional tunnel-junction behavior have been observed: (i) The critical current exhibits, as a function of temperature T, a local minimum at a temperature T*. (ii) At T approximately equal to T*, the first harmonic of the CPR changes sign. (iii) For T<T*, the second harmonic of the CPR is comparable to the first harmonic, and (iv) the ground state of the junction becomes degenerate.
