Objectives: The object of this clinical study was to compare three different aligner systems. The aim was to help the ortho-dontist with choosing an adequate aligner philosophy/therapy system.Materials and methods: This study included 60 randomly chosen patients. Mild to moderate cases were selected, and patients were assigned to three groups of 20 patients each. One group was treated with Invisalign (20 patients), the sec-ond group was treated with CA Clear Aligner and the third group of patients was treated with the Orthocaps aligner sys-tem. In all cases, attachments were used to additionally en-hance the fitting and efficiency of the aligner. Results: All investigated aligner systems achieved the predict-ed goal of the treatment, although with significant differences concerning accuracy, the predicted duration of treatment and the number of refinements. Significant differences were deter-mined, especially regarding the efficiency, duration and cost of treatments. Conclusion: Aligner orthodontics allow for handling difficult treatment cases despite different aligner philosophies, differ-ent materials and different durations of treatment. There were significant differences concerning the envisaged time of treatment. In moderate cases, a significant difference con-cerning duration and costs was determined. IntroductionThere are many orthodontic systems on the market, and it can be difficult for clinicians to choose. The aim of this clinical study was to compare three different aligner systems. The main differences between the systems are described. The study combines a report of 60 treated patients, treated with three currently available systems. Comparisons were made based on factors useful to the clinician, including comfort, cost, and whether the intended treatment goal was reache

Beyond the pledges: reflections on sustainability transitions in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region

The adoption of the SDGs is a step, not a success. (James 2015) On 1 January 2016, 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) paving the way towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development became effective, after being adopted by world leaders at a UN General Assembly held in September 2015. States gave themselves the next 15 years to take concrete action towards achieving these new universally applicable goals. Yet to date, it is evident that there remains a discrepancy between the rate of global progress and the ambitions of the 2030 Agenda (UN 2018). We need to move beyond the initial euphoria of endorsement that occurred in September 2015 and focus on what needs to be done to realise the sustainability agenda in the most effective context-relevant ways, given the various different regions. This places a critical responsibility on researchers, policymakers, and practitioners worldwide to take stock of where things stand and the road ahead

INCOM Egypt has undergone automation in some processes where critical aspects of its operations are transformed and automated. This paper presents an overview of INCOM Egypt processes using Ould Riva and analyses the process of ‘handling a product’. It aims to demonstrate effective automation of the production of wires and cables process accompanied to Industry 4.0 while considering environmental and economic sustainability goals that were inhibited by COVID-19 restrictions. Ould’s Riva method is used to analyse the production process of wires and cables to propose improvements for automating the process. Business process modelling is utilised to study the processes for clearer understating. The flow of information within the process is also analysed to integrate the production process with other processes and supply chains, which helps to identify which production activities can be automated and mainstreamed into the information flow to achieve environmental and economic sustainability. The context of INCOM Egypt, as a case study, is presented along with the Riva model of its operations. The paper identifies the before, i.e., As-Is process, and after, i.e., To-Be Process, automation of the ‘handle a product’ process using the Role Activity Diagram (RAD). The process involved redesigning and improving different activities to increase resource-use efficiency to participate in achieving the goals of sustainability. The focus of this paper is to investigate the negative impact of COVID-19 on sustainability and to examine the accomplishments of process automation of wire production towards environmental and economic sustainability. The results of the research reveal a relationship between business process modelling and sustainability. Moreover, automation of processes (Industry 4.0) is found to reduce the negative effect of COVID-19 on production. A triangulation between process modelling, process automation (Industry 4.0), and sustainability was determined. Each one is reinforcing and impacting one another. The RAD model demonstrates that automation of the activities in the process reduces waste, time, cost, and redundant processes as factors of sustainability, which may also help to lessen the unfavorable effects of the pandemic. The results proved generalisation on other organisations in the same line of business

Sustainable development in the Arab world–is the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region fit for the challenge?

    Get PDF
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region and the wider Arab world are faced with multiple interconnected dilemmas embedded in the social, economic, and environmental pillars of sustainable development. The question of how to design effective sustainability strategies that are aligned with the context of the GCC region is a relevant one. In this special issue, contributors have investigated the obstacles to sustainable development in the GCC region, the impact of current development patterns on the sustainability agenda, and the way in which countries react to local, regional, and global sustainability pressures and debates. The issue aimed to provide a platform for academics to present policy-relevant research and practical steps being taken towards realising genuine sustainable development within the GCC region, while teasing out the major obstacles to this process. This regional focus is motivated by the shared challenge of GCC countries of reforming carbon-based economies as well as their systems of high subsidisation and universal benefits in order to incorporate sustainable concerns, merit-based rules, and more targeted policies. While these challenges are shared with other Arab countries, as well as other countries exporting oil and gas, the origins, current patterns, and future directions of sustainability reforms in the GCC region reveal interesting lessons to be learnt
