International audienceA simple pulse shape randomization scheme is considered in this paper for improving the performance of Ultra Wide band (UWB) communication systems using On Off Keying (OOK) or Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) formats. The advantage of the proposed scheme, which can be either employed for Impulse Radio (IR) or for carrier-based systems, is first theoretically studied based on closed-form derivations of power spectral densities. Then, we investigate an application to an IR-UWB over optical fiber system, by utilizing the 4-th and 5-th orders of Gaussian derivatives. Our approach proves to be effective for 1 Gbps-PPM and 2 Gbps-OOK transmissions, with an advantage in terms of power efficiency for short distances. We also examine the performance for a system employing an in-line Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) with the view to achieve a reach extension, while limiting the cost and system complexity

Simple pre-distortion schemes for improving the power efficiency of SOA-based IR-UWB over fiber systems

International audienceIn this paper, we investigate the usage of SOA for reach extension of an impulse radio over fiber system. Operating in the saturated regime translates into strong nonlinearities and spectral distortions, which drops the power efficiency of the propagated pulses. After studying the SOA response versus operating conditions, we have enhanced the system performance by applying simple analog pre-distortion schemes for various derivatives of the Gaussian pulse and their combination. A novel pulse shape has also been designed by linearly combining three basic Gaussian pulses, offering a very good spectral efficiency (>55%) for a high power (0 dBm) at the amplifier input. Furthermore, the potential of our technique has been examined considering a 1.5 Gbps-OOK and 0.75 Gbps-PPM modulation schemes. Pre-distortion proved an advantage for a large extension of optical link (150 Km), with an inline amplification via SOA at 40 Km

Anatomical study and reanalysis of the nomenclature of the anterolateral complex of the knee focusing on the distal iliotibial band: identification and description of the condylar strap

Background: The capsulo-osseous layer, short lateral ligament, mid-third lateral capsular ligament, lateral capsular ligament and anterolateral ligament are terms that have been used interchangeably to describe what is probably the same structure. This has resulted in confusion regarding the anatomy and function of the anterolateral complex of the knee and its relation to the distal iliotibial band. Purpose: To characterize the macroscopic anatomy of the anterolateral complex of the knee, in particular the femoral condylar attachment of the distal iliotibial band (ITB). We identified a specific and consistent anatomical structure that was not accurately described previously, connects the deep surface of the ITB to the condylar area, and is distinct from the anterolateral ligament, the capsulo-osseous layer and the Kaplan fibers. Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: Sixteen fresh-frozen human cadaveric knees were used to study the anterolateral complex of the knee. Standardized dissections were performed that included a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the anatomy through both anterior (n=5) and posterior (n=11) approaches. Results: The femoral condylar attachment of the distal ITB was not reliably identified by anterior dissection but was in all posterior dissections. A distinct anatomical structure, hereafter termed condylar strap (CS), was identified between the femur and the lateral gastrocnemius on one side and the deep surface of the ITB on the other, in all posteriorly dissected specimens. The structure had a mean thickness of 0.88 mm, and its femoral insertion was located between the distal Kaplan fibers and the epicondyle. The proximal femoral attachment of the structure had a mean width of 15.82 mm and the width of the distal insertion of the structure on the ITB was 13.27 mm. The mean length of the structure was 26.33 mm on its distal border and 21.88 mm on its proximal border. Qualitative evaluation of behavior in internal rotation revealed that this anatomical structure became tensioned and created a tenodesis effect on the ITB. Conclusions: There is a consistent structure that attaches to the deep ITB and the femoral epicondylar area. The orientation of fibers suggest that it may have a role in anterolateral knee stability. Clinical Relevance: This new anatomical description may help surgeons to optimize technical aspects of lateral extra-articular procedures in cases of anterolateral knee laxity

Purpose: To investigate the role of acromiohumeral distance (AHD) and critical shoulder angle (CSA) measurements from conventional radiographs (CR) in isolation and combined (prognostic index PIAHD-CSA) as predictors of full thickness rotator cuff tendon tears (RCT) and critical fatty degeneration (CFD; i.e. as much fat as muscle). Method: In this retrospective study AHD and CSA were measured in 127 CR. MR arthrograms served as reference standard and were screened for RCT and CFD. Statistical analysis for inter-reader agreement, Spearman's rank correlation, linear stepwise regression and logistic regression for AHD and CSA with ROC analyses including PIAHD-CSA were performed. Results: In 90 subjects (17 females, mean age 36.1 ± 14.1) no RCT were found on MR imaging and served as control group. In 37 patients (13 females, mean age 58.7 ± 13.2) ≥ one RCT was found. Inter-reader agreements rated between к = 0.42-0.82 for categorical and 0.91-0.96 for continuous variables. No significant correlation of AHD and CSA with either age or sex was seen (p = 0.28 and p = 0.74, respectively). Case group had significantly smaller mean AHD (8.7 ± 3.2 vs. 10.8 ± 2.2 mm; p < 0.001) and larger mean CSA (36.5 ± 4.5° vs. 33.1 ± 4.0°; p < 0.001). PIAHD-CSA increased diagnostic performance for prediction of RCT and CFD (AUC = 0.78 and 0.71), compared to isolated AHD (0.74 and 0.71) and CSA (0.71 and 0.66). Conclusions: AHD and CSA do not depend on age or sex but differ significantly between healthy and pathologic rotator cuffs. A decreased AHD is most influenced by infraspinatus muscle atrophy and fatty degeneration. Combined PIAHD-CSA increases diagnostic performance for predicting RCT and CFD. In the present work, we have undertaken a structural study of PS-b-PEO single crystals to elucidate the influence of the state of the PS block on crystallization from dilute solution and on subsequent thermal annealing at elevated temperature. It is noteworthy that the interest in these systems has been recently renewed in the perspective of using them as a model of grafted amorphous brushes with variable grafting density. Indeed, during crystallization of PEO, the amorphous block, i.e. PS, is rejected from the crystal accumulating on its basal surfaces. Since the crystal thickness formed during isothermal crystallization is a sharply selected value, the grafting density of the resulting PS brush is also well defined. Therefore by varying the crystal thickness one can obtain the PS brushes with grafting density varying in a broad range. In our study, a combination of reciprocal and direct-space techniques such as SAXS/WAXS and AFM was employed. While AFM experiments were performed on isolated single crystals, the SAXS investigation was carried out on oriented mats of single crystals slowly sedimented from the "mother" solution. In this case, the one-dimensional two-phase system model was used for the data interpretation where the thickness of the amorphous (La) and crystalline (Lc) layers are conventionally determined following the correlation fonction and interface distribution fonction approaches.MULHOUSE-SCD Sciences (682242102) / SudocSudocFranceF
