AMERICANS AND GM FOOD: KNOWLEDGE, OPINION AND INTEREST IN 2004
This report presents the results from the third in a series of studies examining public perception of genetically modified (GM) food in the United States. All three studies were based on survey results of separate, nationally representative samples of approximately 1,200 Americans taken in 2001, 2003, and 2004. While the survey instrument on which the current report is based maintained many of the same measures of awareness and attitude as its two predecessors, it also included several new queries that assess the ability of respondents to recall specific news stories related to GM food, their interest in the topic, and where they would go to look for new information. Many questions that were repeated from previous years have changed considerably in the current survey. Some of the classic measures of awareness and opinion now incorporate an "unsure" response as choice supplied by the interviewer. While respondents were allowed to volunteer this response in the past, explicitly providing this option to respondents reduced guessing on knowledge-based questions and encouraged a more accurate representation of opinion than in the past. The report begins with an investigation of Americans' awareness and knowledge about the topic in general, their ability to recall related news stories, familiarity with laws and regulations as well as other questions designed to get at highly specific knowledge about agricultural biotechnology. Next, it details the effect of the new survey methodology on reported opinions about plant-based and animal-based GM food. Finally, it delves into a number of novel findings about interest in hypothetical television shows about GM food, desire for information on food labels, and reported behavior with regards to information seeking. Consistent with results from our previous studies and others, these findings suggest that the American public is generally unaware of GM food. Most Americans have heard or read little about it, are not aware of its prevalence in their lives, and are confused as to which type of GM products are available. Respondents struggled with factual questions related to GM food and the science behind it, could not recall news stories related to the topic, and were not very knowledgeable about laws regarding the labeling and testing of GM food. Americans are also unsure of their opinions about GM food and split in their assessments of the technology when forced to take a position. Americans say they are interested in the topic of GM food, specifically those topics related to human health. Respondents say they desire more information on food labels and report that they would like to see GM foods labeled as such. Lattice dynamics and structural stability of ordered Fe3Ni, Fe3Pd and Fe3Pt alloys
We investigate the binding surface along the Bain path and phonon dispersion
relations for the cubic phase of the ferromagnetic binary alloys Fe3X (X = Ni,
Pd, Pt) for L12 and DO22 ordered phases from first principles by means of
density functional theory. The phonon dispersion relations exhibit a softening
of the transverse acoustic mode at the M-point in the L12-phase in accordance
with experiments for ordered Fe3Pt. This instability can be associated with a
rotational movement of the Fe-atoms around the Ni-group element in the
neighboring layers and is accompanied by an extensive reconstruction of the
Fermi surface. In addition, we find an incomplete softening in [111] direction
which is strongest for Fe3 Ni. We conclude that besides the valence electron
density also the specific Fe-content and the masses of the alloying partners
should be considered as parameters for the design of Fe-based functional

Dielectron Cross Section Measurements in Nucleus-Nucleus Reactions at 1.0 A GeV
We present measured dielectron production cross sections for Ca+Ca, C+C,
He+Ca, and d+Ca reactions at 1.0 A GeV. Statistical uncertainties and
systematic effects are smaller than in previous DLS nucleus-nucleus data. For
pair mass < 0.35 GeV/c2 : 1) the Ca+Ca cross section is larger than the
previous DLS measurement and current model results, 2) the mass spectra suggest
large contributions from pi0 and eta Dalitz decays, and 3) dsigma/dM is
proportional to ApAt. For M > 0.5 GeV/c2 the Ca+Ca to C+C cross section ratio
is significantly larger than the ratio of ApAt values.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters. Further analysis information

Observation of single collisionally cooled trapped ions in a buffer gas
Individual Ba ions are trapped in a gas-filled linear ion trap and observed
with a high signal-to-noise ratio by resonance fluorescence. Single-ion storage
times of ~5 min (~1 min) are achieved using He (Ar) as a buffer gas at
pressures in the range 8e-5 - 4e-3 torr. Trap dynamics in buffer gases are
experimentally studied in the simple case of single ions. In particular, the
cooling effects of light gases such as He and Ar and the destabilizing
properties of heavier gases such as Xe are studied. A simple model is offered

A simple radionuclide-driven single-ion source
We describe a source capable of producing single barium ions through nuclear
recoils in radioactive decay. The source is fabricated by electroplating 148Gd
onto a silicon {\alpha}-particle detector and vapor depositing a layer of BaF2
over it. 144Sm recoils from the alpha decay of 148Gd are used to dislodge Ba+
ions from the BaF2 layer and emit them in the surrounding environment. The
simultaneous detection of an {\alpha} particle in the substrate detector allows
for tagging of the nuclear decay and of the Ba+ emission. The source is simple,
durable, and can be manipulated and used in different environments. We discuss
the fabrication process, which can be easily adapted to emit most other
chemical species, and the performance of the source
A linear RFQ ion trap for the Enriched Xenon Observatory
The design, construction, and performance of a linear radio-frequency ion
trap (RFQ) intended for use in the Enriched Xenon Observatory (EXO) are
described. EXO aims to detect the neutrinoless double-beta decay of Xe
to Ba. To suppress possible backgrounds EXO will complement the
measurement of decay energy and, to some extent, topology of candidate events
in a Xe filled detector with the identification of the daughter nucleus
(Ba). The ion trap described here is capable of accepting, cooling, and
confining individual Ba ions extracted from the site of the candidate
double-beta decay event. A single trapped ion can then be identified, with a
large signal-to-noise ratio, via laser spectroscopy.Comment: 18 pages, pdflatex, submitted to NIM
A magnetically-driven piston pump for ultra-clean applications
A magnetically driven piston pump for xenon gas recirculation is presented.
The pump is designed to satisfy extreme purity and containment requirements, as
is appropriate for the recirculation of isotopically enriched xenon through the
purification system and large liquid xenon TPC of EXO-200. The pump, using
sprung polymer gaskets, is capable of pumping more than 16 standard liters per
minute (SLPM) of xenon gas with 750 torr differential pressure.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Prospective association of occupational and leisure-time physical activity with orthostatic blood pressure changes in older adults
\ua9 2023, The Author(s).Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is common in older people. We examined the influence of self-reported occupational-related physical activity (PA) and leisure-time physical exercise (PE) on orthostatic response in a sample of older people over a 2 year period. Supine and orthostatic systolic blood pressure (sBP), diastolic blood pressure (dBP), and mean blood pressure (mBP) were assessed in response to Active Stand (AS) test in 205 older subjects (> 60 years old) at baseline and 2-year follow-up. OH was found in 24 subjects (11.71%) at baseline and 20 subjects (9.76%) after 2 years, with a significant degree of variability in the occurrence of OH after 2 years. Twenty-two subjects who had OH at baseline were free of it after 2 years, two subjects had persistent OH at baseline and after 2 years. After 2 years, adults with occupational PA showed no significant decrease of blood pressure in response to AS test, while lack of undertaking an occupation-related PA was significantly related with a greater decrease in sBP and mBP in response to AS testing in the 1st min. Occupation-related PA and leisure-time-related PE were related to an increase in the response of BP on AS in change between baseline and after 2 years. High between-subjects variance in OH over 2 years was noted. Occupations that involved continuous physical activity and leisure-time physical exercise in middle age were both protective for BP decline on orthostatic stress test within 2 years
