Comment on ``Evidence for Narrow Baryon Resonances in Inelastic pp Scattering''
Compton scattering data are sensitive to the existence of low-mass resonances
reported by Tatischeff et al. We show that such states, with their reported
properties, are excluded by previous Compton scattering experiments.Comment: One page, submitted to PR
Comparing international coverage of 9/11 : towards an interdisciplinary explanation of the construction of news
This article presents an interdisciplinary model attempting to explain how news is constructed by relying on the contributions of different fields of study: News Sociology, Political Communications, International Communications, International Relations. It is a first step towards developing a holistic theoretical approach to what shapes the news, which bridges current micro to macro approaches. More precisely the model explains news variation across different media organization and countries by focusing on the different way the sense of newsworthiness of journalists is affected by three main variables: national interest, national journalistic culture, and editorial policy of each media organization. The model is developed on the basis of an investigation into what shaped the media coverage of 9/11 in eight elite newspapers across the US, France, Italy and Pakistan
Quasi-free Compton Scattering from the Deuteron and Nucleon Polarizabilities
Cross sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the deuteron were
measured for incident energies of 236--260 MeV at the laboratory angle -135
degrees. The recoil nucleons were detected in a liquid-scintillator array
situated at 20 degrees. The measured differential cross sections were used,
with the calculations of Levchuk et al., to determine the polarizabilities of
the bound nucleons. For the bound proton, the extracted values were consistent
with the accepted value for the free proton. Combining our results for the
bound neutron with those from Rose et al., we obtain one-sigma constraints of
alpha_n = 7.6-14.0 and beta_n = 1.2-7.6.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted in PR
Semiparametrically Efficient Inference Based on Signs and Ranks for Median Restricted Models
Since the pioneering work of Koenker and Bassett (1978), econometric models involving median and quantile rather than the classical mean or conditional mean concepts have attracted much interest.Contrary to the traditional models where the noise is assumed to have mean zero, median-restricted models enjoy a rich group-invariance structure. In this paper, we exploit this invariance structure in order to obtain semiparametrically efficient inference procedures for these models. These procedures are based on residual signs and ranks, and therefore insensitive to possible misspecification of the underlying innovation density, yet semiparametrically efficient at correctly specified densities. This latter combination is a definite advantage of these procedures over classical quasi-likelihood methods. The techniques we propose can be applied, without additional technical difficulties, to both cross-sectional and time-series models. They do not require any explicit tangent space calculation nor any projections on these.
Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering
We study in QCD the physics of deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS)---the
virtual Compton process in the large s and small t kinematic region. We show
that DVCS can probe a new type of off-forward parton distributions. We derive
an Altarelli-Parisi type of evolution equations for these distributions. We
also derive their sum rules in terms of nucleon form-factors of the twist-two
quark and gluon operators. In particular, we find that the second sum rule is
related to fractions of the nucleon spin carried separately by quarks and
gluons. We estimate the cross section for DVCS and compare it with the
accompanying Bethe-Heitler process at CEBAF and HERMES kinematics.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures, replaced with the version to appear in Phys.

Dirac-Foldy term and the electromagnetic polarizability of the neutron
We reconsider the Dirac-Foldy contribution to the neutron electric
polarizability. Using a Dirac equation approach to neutron-nucleus scattering,
we review the definitions of Compton continuum (), classical
static (), and Schr\"{o}dinger () polarizabilities
and discuss in some detail their relationship. The latter is the
value of the neutron electric polarizability as obtained from an analysis using
the Schr\"{o}dinger equation. We find in particular , where is the magnitude of the magnetic moment
of a neutron of mass . However, we argue that the static polarizability
is correctly defined in the rest frame of the particle, leading to
the conclusion that twice the Dirac-Foldy contribution should be added to
to obtain the static polarizability .Comment: 11 pages, RevTeX, to appear in Physical Review
Measurement of the Electric and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Proton
The Compton scattering cross section on the proton has been measured at
laboratory angles of 90 and 135 using tagged photons in the
energy range 70--100 MeV and simultaneously using untagged photons in the range
100--148~MeV. With the aid of dispersion relations, these cross sections were
used to extract the electric and magnetic polarizabilities, and
respectively, of the proton. We find
in agreement with a model-independent dispersion sum rule, and
where the errors shown are statistical, systematic, and model-dependent,
respectively. A comparison with previous experiments is given and global values
for the polarizabilities are extracted.Comment: 35 pages, 11 PostScript figures, uses RevTex 3.
CRAFT (Cerclage after full dilatation caesarean section): protocol of a mixed methods study investigating the role of previous in-labour caesarean section in preterm birth risk
BACKGROUND: Full dilatation caesarean sections are associated with recurrent early spontaneous preterm birth and late miscarriage. The risk following first stage caesarean sections, are less well defined, but appears to be increased in late-first stage of labour. The mechanism for this increased risk of late miscarriage and early spontaneous preterm birth in these women is unknown and there are uncertainties with regards to clinical management. Current predictive models of preterm birth (based on transvaginal ultrasound and quantitative fetal fibronectin) have not been validated in these women and it is unknown whether the threshold to define a short cervix (â€25âmm) is reliable in predicting the risk of preterm birth. In addition the efficacy of standard treatments or whether benefit may be derived from prophylactic interventions such as a cervical cerclage is unknown. METHODS: There are three distinct components to the CRAFT project (CRAFT-OBS, CRAFT-RCT and CRAFT-IMG). CRAFT-OBS: Observational Study; To evaluate subsequent pregnancy risk of preterm birth in women with a prior caesarean section in established labour. This prospective study of cervical length and quantitative fetal fibronectin data will establish a predictive model of preterm birth. CRAFT-RCT: Randomised controlled trial arm; To assess treatment for short cervix in women at high risk of preterm birth following a fully dilated caesarean section. CRAFT-IMG: Imaging sub-study; To evaluate the use of MRI and transvaginal ultrasound imaging of micro and macrostructural cervical features which may predispose to preterm birth in women with a previous fully dilated caesarean section, such as scar position and niche. DISCUSSION: The CRAFT project will quantify the risk of preterm birth or late miscarriage in women with previous in-labour caesarean section, define the best management and shed light on pathological mechanisms so as to improve the care we offer to women and their babies. TRIAL REGISTRATION: CRAFT was prospectively registered on 25th November 2019 with the ISRCTN registry ( https://doi.org/10.1186/ISRCTN15068651 )
Loop Variables for compact two-dimensional quantum electrodynamics
Variables parametrized by closed and open curves are defined to reformulate
compact U(1) Quantum Electrodynamics in the circle with a massless fermion
field. It is found that the gauge invariant nature of these variables
accommodates into a regularization scheme for the Hamiltonian and current
operators that is specially well suited for the study of the compact case. The
zero mode energy spectrum, the value of the axial anomaly and the anomalous
commutators this model presents are hence determined in a manifestly gauge
invariant manner. Contrary to the non compact case, the zero mode spectrum is
not equally spaced and consequently the theory does not lead to the spectrum of
a free scalar boson. All the states are invariant under large gauge
transformations. In particular, that is the case for the vacuum, and
consequently the -dependence does not appear.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Virtual Compton Scattering off the Nucleon in Chiral Perturbation Theory
We investigate the spin-independent part of the virtual Compton scattering
(VCS) amplitude off the nucleon within the framework of chiral perturbation
theory. We perform a consistent calculation to third order in external momenta
according to Weinberg's power counting. With this calculation we can determine
the second- and fourth-order structure-dependent coefficients of the general
low-energy expansion of the spin-averaged VCS amplitude based on gauge
invariance, crossing symmetry and the discrete symmetries. We discuss the
kinematical regime to which our calculation can be applied and compare our
expansion with the multipole expansion by Guichon, Liu and Thomas. We establish
the connection of our calculation with the generalized polarizabilities of the
nucleon where it is possible.Comment: 26 pages, 2 Postscript figures, RevTex using epsfi
