    An optical image is projected onto a planar surface of a photocathode that derives an electron beam replica of the image. A target electrode displaced relative to the photocathode so that it does not obstruct the optical image includes a planar surface for receiving and deriving an accurate replica of the electron beam image. The two planar surfaces are parallel. The electron beam image is focused on the target electrode by providing throughout a region that extends between the planar surfaces of the photocathode and receiving electrode, constant homogeneous dc electric and magnetic fields. The electric field extends in a direction perpendicular to the planar surfaces while the magnetic field extends along a straight line that intersects the photocathode and target electrode at an acute angle

    Described is an unobscured three mirror wide angle telescopic imaging system comprised of an input baffle which provides a 20 deg (Y axis) x 30 deg (X axis) field of view, a primary mirror having a convex spherical surface, a secondary mirror having a concave ellipsoidal reflecting surface, a tertiary mirror having a concave spherical reflecting surface. The mirrors comprise mirror elements which are offset segments of parent mirrors whose axes and vertices commonly lie on the system's optical axis. An iris diaphragm forming an aperture stop is located between the secondary and tertiary mirror with its center also being coincident with the optical axis and being further located at the beam waist of input light beams reflected from the primary and secondary mirror surfaces. At the system focus following the tertiary mirror is located a flat detector which may be, for example, a TV imaging tube or a photographic film. When desirable, a spectral transmission filter is placed in front of the detector in close proximity thereto

    Middle Phanerozoic mass extinctions and a tribute to the work of Professor Tony Hallam

    Tony Hallam's contributions to mass extinction studies span more than 50 years and this thematic issue provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the many pioneering contributions he has made to this field. Early work (1961) on the Jurassic in Europe revealed a link, during the Toarcian Stage, between extinction and the spread of anoxic waters during transgression – the first time such a common leitmotif had been identified. He also identified substantial sea-level changes during other mass extinction intervals with either regression (end-Triassic) or early transgression (end-Permian) coinciding with the extinction phases. Hallam's (1981) study on bivalves was also the first to elevate the status of the end-Triassic crisis and place it amongst true mass extinctions, changing previous perceptions that it was a part of a protracted period of turnover, although debates on the duration of this crisis continue (Hallam, 2002). Conflicting views on the nature of recovery from mass extinctions have also developed, especially for the aftermath of the end-Permian mass extinction. These discussions can be traced to Hallam's seminal 1991 paper that noted the considerable delay in benthic recovery during Early Triassic time and attributed it to the persistence of the harmful, high-stress conditions responsible for the extinction itself. This idea now forms the cornerstone of one of the more favoured explanations for this ultra-low diversity interval

A combination of nanostructure in the scales, which reflect or scatter light, and absorption from chemical pigments in the scales and wing substrate create the final colour appearance. We compared the wing scale morphology of the pierid butterfly Pieris rapae (Small White) to the reflectance spectra from its wings. Its wing scales contain a dense array of pterin pigment beads. A positive correlation between bead-array density and wing reflectance, at wavelengths where the pigment does not absorb, was identified and characterised. We observed, however, that light scatter from these beads does not account for all of the broadband light scatter observed from the wings. The rest of the scale structure plays an important role in achieving high light scatter. Furthermore, combining the underlying scattering and absorption mechanisms within the butterfly scales enabled us to quantify the optical characteristics of the samples using CIELab colour theory

    The Tripartite Interactive Assessment Delivery System (TRIADS) is an advanced computer-based assessment system designed to provide the widest possible flexibility in assessment design and delivery. Initially developed at the University of Derby it was evaluated in some forty-five departments at twenty-seven UK universities in twenty-four disciplines as part of the HEFCE-FDTL ‘Assessment of Learning Outcomes’ project (Liverpool, Derby and Open Universities 1996-2001). In the three papers that follow, the outcomes of this evaluation are summarized together with subsequent developments and examples of applications of TRIADS at Cardiff Dental School and Birkbeck College, University of London

    The incidence and make up of ability grouped sets in the UK primary school

    The adoption of setting in the primary school (pupils ability grouped across classes for particular subjects) emerged during the 1990s as a means to raise standards. Recent research based on 8875 children in the Millennium Cohort Study showed that 25.8% of children in Year 2 were set for literacy and mathematics and a further 11.2% of children were set for mathematics or literacy alone. Logistic regression analysis showed that the best predictors of being in the top set for literacy or mathematics were whether the child was born in the Autumn or Winter and cognitive ability scores. Boys were significantly more likely than girls to be in the bottom literacy set. Family circumstances held less importance for setting placement compared with the child’s own characteristics, although they were more important in relation to bottom set placement. Children in bottom sets were significantly more likely to be part of a long-term single parent household, have experienced poverty, and not to have a mother with qualifications at NVQ3 or higher levels. The findings are discussed in relation to earlier research and the implications for schools are set out

    Multivariate statistical data analysis of cell-free protein synthesis toward monitoring and control

    The optimization and control of cell free protein synthesis (CFPS) presents an ongoing challenge due to the complex synergies and nonlinearities that cannot be fully explained in first principle models. This article explores the use of multivariate statistical tools for analyzing data sets collected from the CFPS of Cereulide monoclonal antibodies. During the collection of these data sets, several of the process parameters were modified to investigate their effect on the end‐point product (yield). Through the application of principal component analysis and partial least squares (PLS), important correlations in the process could be identified. For example, yield had a positive correlation with pH and NH3 and a negative correlation with CO2 and dissolved oxygen. It was also found that PLS was able to provide a long‐term prediction of product yield. The presented work illustrates that multivariate statistical techniques provide important insights that can help support the operation and control of CFPS processes

    Time Trends in Incidence of Reported Memory Concerns and Cognitive Decline: A Cohort Study in UK Primary Care

    PURPOSE: To investigate time trends in incidence of recorded memory concerns (MC) and cognitive decline (CD) in a UK older population presenting to primary care with no prior diagnosis of dementia. To determine the risk of developing dementia in people with recorded memory concern and cognitive decline. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included individuals aged 65–99 years who contributed to data within the IQVIA medical research database from 1st January 2009 to 31st December 2018. We reported crude incidence rates for MC (study population n=1,310,838) and CD (n=1,348,796). We conducted survival analysis to estimate the risk of developing dementia using fine-grey sub-distribution hazard model with competing risk of death. RESULTS: We identified 55,941 individuals (4.3%) with a record of incident MC; rates were fairly stable over the decade of study. We identified 14,869 people (1.1%) with a record of incident CD, and these rates increased from 1.29/1000 PYAR (95% CI 1.21 to 1.38) in 2009 to 3.49/1000 PYAR (95% CI 3.30 to 3.68) in 2018. Within 3 years of follow up from the first record of MC, 45.5% of individuals received a diagnosis of dementia, while of those with a record of CD, 51.7% received a dementia diagnosis. Women, people in older age groups and those living in more deprived areas were more likely to have a record of MC or CD, and their symptoms were more likely to progress to a dementia diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Incidence rates of MC and CD estimated from routinely collected primary care data are lower than those reported in community surveys, suggesting that a minority of people who experience memory loss consult their GP and have it recorded. Our findings indicate that those who do report concerns to primary care, especially women, those in older age groups and those in more deprived areas, are at a higher risk for developing dementia
