Long-term stabilization of the length of an optical reference cavity

To obtain a high degree of long-term length stabilisation of an optical reference cavity, its free-spectral range is locked by means of an accurate and stable frequency synthesizer. The locking scheme is twofold: a laser is locked on the N$^{th}$ mode of a reference Fabry-Perot cavity and part of the laser light is shifted in frequency to be in resonance with the (N+1)$^{th}$ mode of the cavity. This shift is generated by an acousto-optical modulator (AOM) mounted in a double-pass scheme, matching half of the free spectral range of the reference cavity. The resulting absolute stabilization of the length of the cavity reaches the 10$^{-11}$ level per second, limited by the lock transfer properties and the frequency stability of the AOM control synthesizer

Five Years Under the Veterans Judicial Review Act: The VA is Brought Kicking and Screaming into the World of Meaningful Due Process

I have been asked to give you the “veterans\u27 perspective” on whether the Court of Veterans Appeals has served the purpose for which it was created by Congress and also to describe what additional steps the court might take to further the ends desired by veterans. This is no easy task. It is difficult not because I do not have a lot to say. It is difficult because it is a charge to speak, in a sense, for all veterans. In order to understand what I mean, I think it may be helpful to give you a little background on the view of the veterans community regarding judicial review. There are forty veterans service organizations recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). These organizations range from the smallest, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, to the largest, the American Legion, which boasts 3.2 million members. The Paralyzed Veterans of America, of which I am the General Counsel, fits somewhere in the middle. In addition, there are other small organizations of veterans which do not have official VA recognition. In all, these organizations speak for some twenty-seven million veterans of the United States Armed Forces. The number of veterans organizations gives you an idea of the diversity of interests of veterans. There is complete unanimity of opinion on few issues affecting the veterans community. A Study of Compositional Techniques Used in the Fusion of Art Music with Jazz and Popular Music

An analysis of the author’s composition portfolio is presented with reference to selected compositions by relevant contemporary composers interviewed in this study: Australian composers Judy Bailey, Stuart Greenbaum, Mark Isaacs, Andrea Keller, and South African composer Stefans Grové. The aim is to identify the existence of fusion in the art music composed by the above mentioned composers and to determine the kind of fusion. Enquiries are being conducted into a composer’s body of work, whether or not there is a specialization in a fusion of genres or whether only certain compositions feature this phenomenon. Further reference is made to the influence of American composers Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Maria Schneider, and Australian composers Paul Grabowsky and Carl Vine upon the accompanying composition portfolio. Composers have to employ certain compositional techniques in order to overcome difficulties in practice. Presenting classical or jazz performers with musical genres they do not normally perform can be confronting. Constraint Molecular Dynamics approach to Fermionic systems

We propose a Constraint Molecular Dynamics model for Fermionic system. In this approach the equations of motion of wave packets for the nuclear many-body problem are solved by imposing that the one-body occupation probability $\bar{f}(r,p,t)$ can assume only values less or equal to 1. This condition reflects the Fermionic nature of the studied systems and it is implemented with a fast algorithm which allows also the study of the heaviest colliding system. The parameters of the model have been chosen to reproduce the average binding energy and radii of nuclei in the mass region $A=30\sim 208$.
