    Stability analysis of intermediate boundary conditions in approximate factorization schemes

    The paper discusses the role of the intermediate boundary condition in the AF2 scheme used by Holst for simulation of the transonic full potential equation. It is shown that the treatment suggested by Holst led to a restriction on the time step and ways to overcome this restriction are suggested. The discussion is based on the theory developed by Gustafsson, Kreiss, and Sundstrom and also on the von Neumann method

    A Radio Determination of the Time of the New Moon

    The detection of the New Moon at sunset is of importance to communities based on the lunar calendar. This is traditionally undertaken with visual observations. We propose a radio method which allows a higher visibility of the Moon relative to the Sun and consequently gives us the ability to detect the Moon much closer to the Sun than is the case of visual observation. We first compare the relative brightness of the Moon and Sun over a range of possible frequencies and find the range 5--100\,GHz to be suitable. The next consideration is the atmospheric absorption/emission due to water vapour and oxygen as a function of frequency. This is particularly important since the relevant observations are near the horizon. We show that a frequency of 10\sim 10 GHz is optimal for this programme. We have designed and constructed a telescope with a FWHM resolution of 0 ⁣ ⁣^\circ{}\!\!.6 and low sidelobes to demonstrate the potential of this approach. At the time of the 21 May 2012 New Moon the Sun/Moon brightness temperature ratio was 72.7±2.272.7 \pm 2.2 in agreement with predictions from the literature when combined with the observed sunspot numbers for the day. The Moon would have been readily detectable at 2\sim 2^{\circ} from the Sun. Our observations at 16\,hr\,36\,min UT indicated that the Moon would have been at closest approach to the Sun 16\,hr\,25\,min earlier; this was the annular solar eclipse of 00\,hr\,00\,min\,UT on 21 May 2012.Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    INFLUENCE OF WELL LOCATION ON DRAWDOWN IN AREA SURROUNDED BY VERTICAL CUTOFF WALLS

    Dewatering systems with vertical partially penetrating cutoff walls are usually used in the case of deep excavation for side support system and further increases the efficiency of the groundwater control system. In this study a parametric analysis was carried out using the finite difference software VISUAL MODFLOW4.2® to study the effect of placing a deep well at different locations inside the excavated area surrounded by impervious wall on drawdown results. The dewatering system under consideration consists of a single partially penetrating deep well having a penetration depth (lw) and well yield (Q). The well is located at variable distances from the corner (the origin of X and Y axes) inside the excavated area surrounded by an impervious wall. The vertical impervious wall has a depth (lc), and the excavated area (A) surrounded with impervious wall is square and having a width (W). The aquifer is unconfined with a depth (H) and is underlain by an impervious layer. The aquifer consists of an extended layer of fine to medium sand having permeability (k). The soil is assumed to be homogenous and isotropic

    Genome-wide identification and predictive modeling of tissue-specific alternative polyadenylation

    MOTIVATION: Pre-mRNA cleavage and polyadenylation are essential steps for 3'-end maturation and subsequent stability and degradation of mRNAs. This process is highly controlled by cis-regulatory elements surrounding the cleavage/polyadenylation sites (polyA sites), which are frequently constrained by sequence content and position. More than 50% of human transcripts have multiple functional polyA sites, and the specific use of alternative polyA sites (APA) results in isoforms with variable 3'-untranslated regions, thus potentially affecting gene regulation. Elucidating the regulatory mechanisms underlying differential polyA preferences in multiple cell types has been hindered both by the lack of suitable data on the precise location of cleavage sites, as well as of appropriate tests for determining APAs with significant differences across multiple libraries. RESULTS: We applied a tailored paired-end RNA-seq protocol to specifically probe the position of polyA sites in three human adult tissue types. We specified a linear-effects regression model to identify tissue-specific biases indicating regulated APA; the significance of differences between tissue types was assessed by an appropriately designed permutation test. This combination allowed to identify highly specific subsets of APA events in the individual tissue types. Predictive models successfully classified constitutive polyA sites from a biologically relevant background (auROC = 99.6%), as well as tissue-specific regulated sets from each other. We found that the main cis-regulatory elements described for polyadenylation are a strong, and highly informative, hallmark for constitutive sites only. Tissue-specific regulated sites were found to contain other regulatory motifs, with the canonical polyadenylation signal being nearly absent at brain-specific polyA sites. Together, our results contribute to the understanding of the diversity of post-transcriptional gene regulation.     A Pseudospectral Algorithm for Solving Multipantograph Delay Systems on a Semi-Infinite Interval Using Legendre Rational Functions

    A new Legendre rational pseudospectral scheme is proposed and developed for solving numerically systems of linear and nonlinear multipantograph equations on a semi-infinite interval. A Legendre rational collocation method based on Legendre rational-Gauss quadrature points is utilized to reduce the solution of such systems to systems of linear and nonlinear algebraic equations. In addition, accurate approximations are achieved by selecting few Legendre rational-Gauss collocation points. The numerical results obtained by this method have been compared with various exact solutions in order to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method. Indeed, for relatively limited nodes used, the absolute error in our numerical solutions is sufficiently small

    Angiotensinogen Gene Transcription in Pulmonary Fibrosis

    An established body of literature supports the hypothesis that activation of a local tissue angiotensin (ANG) system in the extravascular tissue compartment of the lungs is required for lung fibrogenesis. Transcriptional activation of the angiotensinogen (AGT) gene is believed to be a critical and necessary step in this activation. This paper summarizes the data in support of this theory and discusses transcriptional regulation of AGT, with an emphasis on lung AGT synthesis as a determinant of fibrosis severity. Genetic data linking AGT polymorphisms to the severity of disease in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis are also discussed

    The Behaviour of Swine

    The pig was a forest-dwelling animal from the beginning of its history. In some parts of the world it has been domesticated for at least 7000 years. The European breeds of domestic swine were derived from the local wild pig, Sus scrofa. Herds ranged in pastures and forests and kept indoors only for fattening. The breeds in the Far East were derived from another wild pig, Sus vittatus, a smaller animal with shorter legs and a higher reproductive ability (Mohr 1960; Zeuner 1963). The two types interbred readily. The modem breeds of pig evolved from different crossings between the two original types. They form a rich diversity of genetic material and more than 200 breeds have been catalogued. Certain wild types of pig-like animals, such as the African bush pig (Pontamochoerus larvatus) and the wart hog (Phacochoerus aethiopecus), have never been domesticated. The basis of the social structure in feral swine is the matriarchal herd: one or several females with their offspring. The males are not permanently associated to such herds, often ranging solitary or in \u27bachelor\u27 groups (Fig. 52). Under domestication the pig has been modified from a pugnacious, free-ranging, foraging beast to a more docile animal which is handled readily in large groups under conditions of confined rearing. The behavioural plasticity of swine is emphasized by the rapidity with which wild pigs have adapted to rearing in restricted conditions. Although most of our knowledge of the behaviour of swine has been gained from data collected incidentally to research on nutrition, breeding, physiology and management, a number of experimental studies have recently appeared in learning, adaptation, social, sexual and maternal behaviours, making the pig the best known species among domestic mammals, from the point of view of behaviour

    A high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity with a frequency-doubled green laser for precision Compton polarimetry at Jefferson Lab

    A high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity with a frequency-doubled continuous wave green laser (532~nm) has been built and installed in Hall A of Jefferson Lab for high precision Compton polarimetry. The infrared (1064~nm) beam from a ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier seeded by a Nd:YAG nonplanar ring oscillator laser is frequency doubled in a single-pass periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3_{3} crystal. The maximum achieved green power at 5 W IR pump power is 1.74 W with a total conversion efficiency of 34.8\%. The green beam is injected into the optical resonant cavity and enhanced up to 3.7~kW with a corresponding enhancement of 3800. The polarization transfer function has been measured in order to determine the intra-cavity circular laser polarization within a measurement uncertainty of 0.7\%. The PREx experiment at Jefferson Lab used this system for the first time and achieved 1.0\% precision in polarization measurements of an electron beam with energy and current of 1.0~GeV and 50~μ\muA.Comment: 20 pages, 22 figures, revised version of arXiv:1601.00251v1, submitted to NIM

    Cardiac dysfunction in the diabetic rat: quantitative evaluation using high resolution magnetic resonance imaging

    BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In particular, type 1 diabetes compromises the cardiac function of individuals at a relatively early age due to the protracted course of abnormal glucose homeostasis. The functional abnormalities of diabetic myocardium have been attributed to the pathological changes of diabetic cardiomyopathy. METHODS: In this study, we used high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate the left ventricular functional characteristics of streptozotocin treated diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats (8 weeks disease duration) in comparison with age/sex matched controls. RESULTS: Our analyses of EKG gated cardiac MRI scans of the left ventricle showed a 28% decrease in the end-diastolic volume and 10% increase in the end-systolic volume of diabetic hearts compared to controls. Mean stroke volume and ejection fraction in diabetic rats were decreased (48% and 28%, respectively) compared to controls. Further, dV/dt changes were suggestive of phase sensitive differences in left ventricular kinetics across the cardiac cycle between diabetic and control rats. CONCLUSION: Thus, the MRI analyses of diabetic left ventricle suggest impairment of diastolic and systolic hemodynamics in this rat model of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Our studies also show that in vivo MRI could be used in the evaluation of cardiac dysfunction in this rat model of type 1 diabetes
