The present volume unites fifteen studies on language and meter. For the most part, the articles began as lectures delivered during the interdisciplinary conference on Language and Meter in Diachrony and Synchrony, which was hosted in Munich from September 2nd-4th, 2013 by the Department of Historical and Indo-European Linguistics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-UniversitĂ€t MĂŒnchen. The study of language and meter has profited from numerous advances over the last several hundred years. Scholars have produced accurate editions of poetic texts, added linguistic theory to description, utilized quantitative methods to test hypotheses, and provided descriptions and analyses of a relatively broad range of metrical traditions. To quote an influential handbook article on meter (Brogan 1993: 781), Linguistics, texts, theory, and data- these are the essential preliminaries. At the turn of the 21st c., pretty much everything still remains to be done. In our view, the contributions to this volume make a respectable amount of headway on numerous fronts. In the following overview, we intend to give a sense of the breadth of topics and traditions treated in the contributions as well as their relationship to previous scholarship

<Articles> Vowel Weakening in Tocharian A Preterite Participles and Abstract Nouns

The phonology of Tocharian A (TA) has been extensively affected by two vowel weakenings, *aÌ > *a and *a > *Ă€, but the precise conditions for the second change have not yet been fully clarified. This paper demonstrates that pre-TA *a in second syllables was raised to *Ă€ only when the first and third syllables both contained one of the full vowels *a, *aÌ, *e, *o. The two main exceptions to this pattern, preterite participles and abstract nouns, may be explained otherwise. In preterite participles such as tatmu ‘born’, *a was regularly raised to *Ă€ in oblique case forms. Once the syncope of *Ă€ in open syllables had made vowel weakening opaque on the surface, this paradigmatic alternation was unsurprisingly leveled, and the stem vocalism of the oblique forms was generalized. As for abstract nouns, the most common suffix -une has spread at the expense of its allomorph -one, so that the weakening in forms like yáÌtlune ‘being able, ability’ < *yaÌtaÌ- or sÚáÌmnune ‘monkhood’ < *sÚaÌman- can also have been a regular development. Comparison of TA -une, -one and Tocharian B -(Àñ)ñe, -auñe allows us to reconstruct a single Proto-Tocharian suffix *-wnĂ«ye, which was borrowed from Middle Iranian

Fibrosing mediastinitis: An unusual cause of superior vena cava symptoms

    Get PDF
Fibrosing mediastinitis is a rare benign disorder caused by the proliferation of acellular collagen and fibrous tissue within the mediastinum. Although many cases are idiopathic, many (and perhaps most) cases are thought to be caused by an abnormal immunologic response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Histoplasma capsulatum infections. Collagen formation leads to compression of vital structures, resulting in cough, chest pain, and dyspnea. The following case is a former healthy middle-age man who presented with an 8-year history of cough, chest pain, facial swelling, and trouble breathing, and was subsequently found to have fibrosing mediastinitis. Fibrosing mediastinitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cough, chest pain, and dyspnea, primarily when findings such as increased venous pressure are present on physical exam, and hilar abnormalities are seen on chest radiograph

With insight grounded in his work for a national data collection consortium and as Vice President of Quality and Outcomes at the Children\u27s Hospital of Wisconsin, the author connects the theory of pay-for-performance to the realities of its implementation. The author expands the Diagnosing the Data conversation by describing the challenges of collecting meaningful data and by addressing the potential legal issues that data use raises. Drawing on his national and local experience, the author concludes with suggestions for adopting data collection programs that are both clinically relevant and scientifically reliable

The present invention provides formulations useful to treat EPM. It also provides methods to treat EPM in a horse in need of such treatment, comprising administering a pharmaceutically effective amount of a triazine-based anti-coccidial. Preferred are methods to treat EPM using clazuril, diclazuril, toltrazuril or letrazuril. The present invention also provides methods to prevent S. neurona infection in horses comprising administering a prophylactic amount of a triazine-based anticoccidial. Preferred is a method to prevent S. neurona infection by using clazuril, diclazuril, toltrazuril or letrazuril, alone or in combination with other known therapeutics
