Determination of wind tunnel constraint effects by a unified pressure signature method. Part 1: Applications to winged configurations
A new, fast, non-iterative version of the "Wall Pressure Signature Method" is described and used to determine blockage and angle-of-attack wind tunnel corrections for highly-powered jet-flap models. The correction method is complemented by the application of tangential blowing at the tunnel floor to suppress flow breakdown there, using feedback from measured floor pressures. This tangential blowing technique was substantiated by subsequent flow investigations using an LV. The basic tests on an unswept, knee-blown, jet flapped wing were supplemented to include the effects of slat-removal, sweep and the addition of unflapped tips. C sub mu values were varied from 0 to 10 free-air C sub l's in excess of 18 were measured in some cases. Application of the new methods yielded corrected data which agreed with corresponding large tunnel "free air" resuls to within the limits of experimental accuracy in almost all cases. Determination of wind tunnel constraint effects by a unified pressure signature method. Part 2: Application to jet-in-crossflow
The development of an improved jet-in-crossflow model for estimating wind tunnel blockage and angle-of-attack interference is described. Experiments showed that the simpler existing models fall seriously short of representing far-field flows properly. A new, vortex-source-doublet (VSD) model was therefore developed which employs curved trajectories and experimentally-based singularity strengths. The new model is consistent with existing and new experimental data and it predicts tunnel wall (i.e. far-field) pressures properly. It is implemented as a preprocessor to the wall-pressure-signature-based tunnel interference predictor. The supporting experiments and theoretical studies revealed some new results. Comparative flow field measurements with 1-inch "free-air" and 3-inch impinging jets showed that vortex penetration into the flow, in diameters, was almost unaltered until 'hard' impingement occurred. In modeling impinging cases, a 'plume redirection' term was introduced which is apparently absent in previous models. The effects of this term were found to be very significant
Physical boundary state for the quantum tetrahedron
We consider stability under evolution as a criterion to select a physical
boundary state for the spinfoam formalism. As an example, we apply it to the
simplest spinfoam defined by a single quantum tetrahedron and solve the
associated eigenvalue problem at leading order in the large spin limit. We show
that this fixes uniquely the free parameters entering the boundary state.
Remarkably, the state obtained this way gives a correlation between edges which
runs at leading order with the inverse distance between the edges, in agreement
with the linearized continuum theory. Finally, we give an argument why this
correlator represents the propagation of a pure gauge, consistently with the
absence of physical degrees of freedom in 3d general relativity.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure
Grasping rules and semiclassical limit of the geometry in the Ponzano-Regge model
We show how the expectation values of geometrical quantities in 3d quantum
gravity can be explicitly computed using grasping rules. We compute the volume
of a labelled tetrahedron using the triple grasping. We show that the large
spin expansion of this value is dominated by the classical expression, and we
study the next to leading order quantum corrections.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
Reflections on a degree initiative: the UK's Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers enter the University of Birmingham
This paper provides an opportunity to share experiences and perceptions of the first 5 years of a degree programme for professional dancers. A partnership developed in the mid-1990s between the UK's Birmingham Royal Ballet and the University of Birmingham, Westhill (now School of Education), to provide a part-time, post-experience, flexible study programme for full-time Company dancers. This is the first 'company customised' higher education programme to dovetail studies around rehearsal, performance and touring schedules. Methodology is based on a narrative by the author, informed by ongoing internal and external evaluations, in-depth interviews with dancers and Company managers, documentation and secondary sources. Outcomes indicate that the programme has made a positive difference to the Company, to the dancers and to the wider education and dance/arts world
Maternal steroid levels and the autistic traits of the mother and infant.
BackgroundPrenatal sex steroids have been associated with autism in several clinical and epidemiological studies. It is unclear how this relates to the autistic traits of the mother and how early this can be detected during pregnancy and postnatal development.MethodsMaternal serum was collected from pregnant women (n = 122) before or during their first ultrasound appointment [mean = 12.7 (SD = 0.7) weeks]. Concentrations of the following were measured via immunoassays: testosterone, estradiol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, progesterone; and sex hormone-binding globulin which was used to compute the free fractions of estradiol (FEI) and testosterone (FTI). Standardised human choriogonadotropin (hCG) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) values were obtained from clinical records corresponding to the same serum samples. Mothers completed the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) and for their infants, the Quantitative Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (Q-CHAT) when the infants were between 18 and 20 months old.ResultsFEI was positively associated with maternal autistic traits in univariate (n = 108, Pearson's r = 0.22, p = 0.019) and multiple regression models (semipartial r = 0.19, p = 0.048) controlling for maternal age and a diagnosis of PCOS. Maternal estradiol levels significantly interacted with fetal sex in predicting infant Q-CHAT scores, with a positive relationship in males but not females (n = 100, interaction term: semipartial r = 0.23, p = 0.036) after controlling for maternal AQ and other covariates. The opposite was found for standardised hCG values and Q-CHAT scores, with a positive association in females but not in males (n = 151, interaction term: r = -0.25, p = 0.005).LimitationsSample size of this cohort was small, with potential ascertainment bias given elective recruitment. Clinical covariates were controlled in multiple regression models, but additional research is needed to confirm the statistically significant findings in larger cohorts.ConclusionMaternal steroid factors during pregnancy are associated with autistic traits in mothers and their infants
Muslim Diaspora in the West and International HRM
Interest in Islam and how Muslims organise themselves within the so-called Western
world has largely stemmed from the flow of Muslim immigration since the 1960s and the
1970s (Loobuyck, Debeer, & Meier, 2013). Many of these immigrants have come to these
new lands in the hope of making a better life for themselves economically, or to escape
the political or religious pressures of their homeland (Lebl, 2014). Initially, deeming the
influx of these foreigners to be largely irrelevant, there was little interest in their presence
by the different governments across many jurisdictions. Typically, scant interest was shown
towards entering into dialogue with the Muslim immigrant community. Indeed, until the
1990s, it was not uncommon for Islam to be perceived as a strange, foreign religion that
was best managed through outsourcing to respective consulates (Loobuyck et al., 2013).
Yet, migration and work-based mobility has a significant influence on the world of work
and societies in which organisations are embedded. Many individuals migrate for better
employment perspectives, as well as due to chain migration, betterment in the quality of life
and based on fleeing famine, war and terror zones globally (Sharma & Reimer-Kirkham,
2015; Valiūnienė, 2016). Migration could involve upward as well as downward mobility/
wages, depending on the country and organisation. For example, minimum wages differ
from € 184 in Bulgaria up to € 1923 in Luxembourg (Valiūnienė, 2016). Migration also
contributes to the lived religion of diasporic communities as they navigate their faith at
work (Sharma & Reimer-Kirkha
Chiral Behaviour of the Rho Meson in Lattice QCD
In order to guide the extrapolation of the mass of the rho meson calculated
in lattice QCD with dynamical fermions, we study the contributions to its
self-energy which vary most rapidly as the quark mass approaches zero; from the
processes and . It turns out that in
analysing the most recent data from CP-PACS it is crucial to estimate the
self-energy from using the same grid of discrete momenta as
included implicitly in the lattice simulation. The correction associated with
the continuum, infinite volume limit can then be found by calculating the
corresponding integrals exactly. Our error analysis suggests that a factor of
10 improvement in statistics at the lowest quark mass for which data currently
exists would allow one to determine the physical rho mass to within 5%.
Finally, our analysis throws new light on a long-standing problem with the

Measuring diet in primary school children aged 8-11 years: validation of the Child and Diet Evaluation Tool (CADET) with an emphasis on fruit and vegetable intake.
Background/Objectives:The Child And Diet Evaluation Tool (CADET) is a 24-h food diary that measures the nutrition intake of children aged 3-7 years, with a focus on fruit and vegetable consumption. Until now CADET has not been used to measure nutrient intake of children aged 8-11 years. To ensure that newly assigned portion sizes for this older age group were valid, participants were asked to complete the CADET diary (the school and home food diary) concurrently with a 1-day weighed record. Subjects/Methods:A total of 67 children with a mean age of 9.3 years (s.d.: ± 1.4, 51% girls) participated in the study. Total fruit and vegetable intake in grams and other nutrients were extracted to compare the mean intakes from the CADET diary and Weighed record using t-tests and Pearson's r correlations. Bland-Altman analysis was also conducted to assess the agreement between the two methods. Results: Correlations comparing the CADET diary to the weighed record were high for fruit, vegetables and combined fruit and vegetables (r=0.7). The results from the Bland-Altman plots revealed a mean difference of 54 g (95% confidence interval: -88, 152) for combined fruit and vegetables intake. CADET is the only tool recommended by the National Obesity Observatory that has been validated in a UK population and provides nutrient level data on children's diets. Conclusions:The results from this study conclude that CADET can provide high-quality nutrient data suitable for evaluating intervention studies now for children aged 3-11 years with a focus on fruit and vegetable intake
Chiral extrapolation of lattice moments of proton quark distributions
We present the resolution of a long-standing discrepancy between the moments
of parton distributions calculated from lattice QCD and their experimental
values. We propose a simple extrapolation formula for the moments of the
nonsinglet quark distribution u-d, as a function of quark mass, which embodies
the general constraints imposed by the chiral symmetry of QCD. The inclusion of
the leading nonanalytic behavior leads to an excellent description of both the
