Common Ground: Uniting Archaeology and Secondary Social Studies Curricula
Archaeologists have been attempting to establish stronger connections with communities for several decades. Concepts such as stewardship can be presented to a larger audience, and archaeology can be a valuable tool for public education. Public schools across the nation are struggling to improve with limited resources. Archaeology can provide teachers with inexpensive resources that improve student learning while simultaneously helping teachers meet more rigorous standards. Using historical, archaeological, and cultural resources from the World War II Japanese American internment camp, Amache, I created a new supplementary curriculum that focused on the experience of Japanese and Japanese Americans during that era. This thesis presents that curriculum and an accompanying case study that introduced archaeologically based activities in a secondary social studies classroom. Analysis of student responses indicates that supplementing with archaeology had no adverse effects to student exam scores on overall WWII history. In addition many students felt more connected to former Amache internees and their experience
Permutation notations for the exceptional Weyl group F\u3csub\u3e4\u3c/sub\u3e
This paper describes a permutation notation for the Weyl groups of type F4 and G2. The image in the permutation group is presented as well as an analysis of the structure of the group. This description enables faster computations in these Weyl groups which will prove useful for a variety of applications
BOSS-LDG: A Novel Computational Framework that Brings Together Blue Waters, Open Science Grid, Shifter and the LIGO Data Grid to Accelerate Gravitational Wave Discovery
We present a novel computational framework that connects Blue Waters, the
NSF-supported, leadership-class supercomputer operated by NCSA, to the Laser
Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) Data Grid via Open Science
Grid technology. To enable this computational infrastructure, we configured,
for the first time, a LIGO Data Grid Tier-1 Center that can submit
heterogeneous LIGO workflows using Open Science Grid facilities. In order to
enable a seamless connection between the LIGO Data Grid and Blue Waters via
Open Science Grid, we utilize Shifter to containerize LIGO's workflow software.
This work represents the first time Open Science Grid, Shifter, and Blue Waters
are unified to tackle a scientific problem and, in particular, it is the first
time a framework of this nature is used in the context of large scale
gravitational wave data analysis. This new framework has been used in the last
several weeks of LIGO's second discovery campaign to run the most
computationally demanding gravitational wave search workflows on Blue Waters,
and accelerate discovery in the emergent field of gravitational wave
astrophysics. We discuss the implications of this novel framework for a wider

Ice and snow thickness variability and change in the high Arctic Ocean observed by in-situ measurements
In April 2017 we collected unique, extensive in-situ data of sea ice and snow thickness. At ten sampling sites, located under a CryoSat-2 overpass, between Ellesmere Island and 87.1°N mean and modal total ice thicknesses ranged between 2 to 3.4 m and 1.8 to 2.9 m respectively. Coincident snow thicknesses ranged between 0.3 to 0.47 m (mean), and 0.1 to 0.5 m (mode). The profile spanned the complete multiyear ice zone in the Lincoln Sea, into the first-year ice zone further north. Complementary snow thickness measurements near the North Pole showed a mean thickness of 0.31 m. Compared with scarce measurements from other years, multiyear ice was up to 0.75 m thinner than in 2004, but not significantly different from 2011 and 2014. We found excellent agreement with a commonly used snow climatology and with published long-term ice thinning rates. There was reasonable agreement with CryoSat-2 thickness retrieval
Synthetic mimetics of the endogenous gastrointestinal nanomineral: Silent constructs that trap macromolecules for intracellular delivery.
Amorphous magnesium-substituted calcium phosphate (AMCP) nanoparticles (75-150nm) form constitutively in large numbers in the mammalian gut. Collective evidence indicates that they trap and deliver luminal macromolecules to mucosal antigen presenting cells (APCs) and facilitate gut immune homeostasis. Here, we report on a synthetic mimetic of the endogenous AMCP and show that it has marked capacity to trap macromolecules during formation. Macromolecular capture into AMCP involved incorporation as shown by STEM tomography of the synthetic AMCP particle with 5nm ultra-fine iron (III) oxohydroxide. In vitro, organic cargo-loaded synthetic AMCP was taken up by APCs and tracked to lysosomal compartments. The AMCP itself did not regulate any gene, or modify any gene regulation by its cargo, based upon whole genome transcriptomic analyses. We conclude that synthetic AMCP can efficiently trap macromolecules and deliver them to APCs in a silent fashion, and may thus represent a new platform for antigen delivery
Integrated safety analysis of filgotinib for ulcerative colitis: Results from SELECTION and SELECTIONLTE
BACKGROUND: Filgotinib 200 mg (FIL200) is an approved treatment for adults with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC).
AIM: To report integrated safety data from the phase 2b/3 SELECTION study (NCT02914522) and its ongoing long-term extension study SELECTIONLTE (NCT02914535).
METHODS: Safety outcomes were analysed in adults with moderately to severely active UC who received FIL200, filgotinib 100 mg (FIL100) or placebo once daily throughout the 11-week SELECTION induction study, the 47-week SELECTION maintenance study (if applicable) and SELECTIONLTE (if applicable). Exposure-adjusted incidence rates (EAIRs) per 100 censored patient-years of exposure with 95% confidence intervals were reported for treatment-emergent adverse events (AEs). Certain AE data were presented in subgroups, including age and prior biologic exposure status.
RESULTS: This interim analysis included 1348 patients representing 3326.2 patient-years of exposure. Baseline characteristics of patients entering SELECTION were similar across treatment groups. EAIRs for serious infection, thromboembolic events and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) were consistently low across treatment groups. Most patients with MACE had cardiovascular risk factors. The EAIR for herpes zoster was numerically higher for FIL200 than for placebo. Infection incidences were numerically higher in biologic-experienced than biologic-naive patients. Higher incidences of certain AEs in patients 65 years of age or older were as expected. Four deaths occurred, including three cardiovascular deaths, none of which was considered related to filgotinib.
CONCLUSION: FIL200 and FIL100 were well tolerated with no unexpected safety signals in patients with moderately to severely active UC, regardless of previous biologic exposure or age
European clinical guidelines for Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders-version 2.0. Part I:assessment
In 2011 a working group of the European Society for the Study of Tourette Syndrome (ESSTS) has developed the first European assessment guidelines for Tourette syndrome (TS). Now, we present an updated version 2.0 of these European clinical guidelines for Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders, part I: assessment. Therefore, the available literature has been thoroughly screened, supplemented with national guidelines across countries and discussions among ESSTS experts. Diagnostic changes between DSM-IV and DSM-5 classifications were taken into account and new information has been added regarding differential diagnoses, with an emphasis on functional movement disorders in both children and adults. Further, recommendations regarding rating scales to evaluate tics, comorbidities, and neuropsychological status are provided. Finally, results from a recently performed survey among ESSTS members on assessment in TS are described. We acknowledge that the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) is still the gold standard for assessing tics. Recommendations are provided for scales for the assessment of tics and psychiatric comorbidities in patients with TS not only in routine clinical practice, but also in the context of clinical research. Furthermore, assessments supporting the differential diagnosis process are given as well as tests to analyse cognitive abilities, emotional functions and motor skills

Genomics of Loa loa, a Wolbachia-free filarial parasite of humans
Loa loa, the African eyeworm, is a major filarial pathogen of humans. Unlike most filariae, Loa loa does not contain the obligate intracellular Wolbachia endosymbiont. We describe the 91.4 Mb genome of Loa loa, and the genome of the related filarial parasite Wuchereria bancrofti, and predict 14,907 Loa loa genes based on microfilarial RNA sequencing. By comparing these genomes to that of another filarial parasite, Brugia malayi, and to several other nematode genomes, we demonstrate synteny among filariae but not with non-parasitic nematodes. The Loa loa genome encodes many immunologically relevant genes, as well as protein kinases targeted by drugs currently approved for humans. Despite lacking Wolbachia, Loa loa shows no new metabolic synthesis or transport capabilities compared to other filariae. These results suggest that the role played by Wolbachia in filarial biology is more subtle than previously thought and reveal marked differences between parasitic and non-parasitic nematodes
Widespread polycistronic gene expression in green algae
Polycistronic gene expression, common in prokaryotes, was thought to be extremely rare in eukaryotes. The development of long-read sequencing of full-length transcript isomers (Iso-Seq) has facilitated a reexamination of that dogma. Using Iso-Seq, we discovered hundreds of examples of polycistronic expression of nuclear genes in two divergent species of green algae: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Chromochloris zofingiensis Here, we employ a range of independent approaches to validate that multiple proteins are translated from a common transcript for hundreds of loci. A chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis using trimethylation of lysine 4 on histone H3 marks confirmed that transcription begins exclusively at the upstream gene. Quantification of polyadenylated [poly(A)] tails and poly(A) signal sequences confirmed that transcription ends exclusively after the downstream gene. Coexpression analysis found nearly perfect correlation for open reading frames (ORFs) within polycistronic loci, consistent with expression in a shared transcript. For many polycistronic loci, terminal peptides from both ORFs were identified from proteomics datasets, consistent with independent translation. Synthetic polycistronic gene pairs were transcribed and translated in vitro to recapitulate the production of two distinct proteins from a common transcript. The relative abundance of these two proteins can be modified by altering the Kozak-like sequence of the upstream gene. Replacement of the ORFs with selectable markers or reporters allows production of such heterologous proteins, speaking to utility in synthetic biology approaches. Conservation of a significant number of polycistronic gene pairs between C. reinhardtii, C. zofingiensis, and five other species suggests that this mechanism may be evolutionarily ancient and biologically important in the green algal lineage
Planetary Candidates Observed by Kepler VI: Planet Sample from Q1-Q16 (47 Months)
\We present the sixth catalog of Kepler candidate planets based on nearly 4
years of high precision photometry. This catalog builds on the legacy of
previous catalogs released by the Kepler project and includes 1493 new Kepler
Objects of Interest (KOIs) of which 554 are planet candidates, and 131 of these
candidates have best fit radii <1.5 R_earth. This brings the total number of
KOIs and planet candidates to 7305 and 4173 respectively. We suspect that many
of these new candidates at the low signal-to-noise limit may be false alarms
created by instrumental noise, and discuss our efforts to identify such
objects. We re-evaluate all previously published KOIs with orbital periods of
>50 days to provide a consistently vetted sample that can be used to improve
planet occurrence rate calculations. We discuss the performance of our planet
detection algorithms, and the consistency of our vetting products. The full
