Harmful monitoring
Abstract We show that there may be circumstances in which a principal prefers not to observe the project choice of an agent that acts on her behalf. The ability of the agent is private information. Projects differ with respect to the amount of risk. If the principal can observe the project choice of the agent, the latter will use that choice as a signal. In the separating equilibrium, an agent with high ability then chooses a project that is too risky. If more difficult projects require more effort, there are two opposite effects. The shirking effect implies that the agent chooses a project that is too safe. The signaling effect implies that he chooses a project that is too risky. The net effect is ambiguous. We also discuss the implications of our model for promotion policies.
The Commitment Effect of Choosing the Same Bank
In a model where firms use external funds to finance R&D investments, we show that they may prefer to borrow from the same bank, rather than going to competing banks. A monopolist bank will capture more of firms' operating profits. But, these profits will also be higher, since having the same bank serves as a commitment device not to spend too much on R&D. In our model, the latter effect dominates.
English Language Literacy and the Prediction of Academic Success in and beyond the Pathway Program
Widespread emphasis on internationalization in higher education has generated tremendous growth in international student enrollments at U.S. colleges and universities. In fact, from 2002/2003 to 2012/2013, the number of international students in the U.S. increased from 586,323 to 819,644, an increase of almost 40% over ten years (Institute of International Education 2013). These students are primarily multilingual, contributing varying levels of English proficiency and, often, a new sense of institutional diversity. In addition, these students often pay out-of-state tuition, making it possible for the university to diversify tuition streams as well.
Partially motivated by these realities, and in order to attract and retain greater numbers of international students, many U.S. universities have developed various forms of pathway programs designed to support conditionally or provisionally admitted multilingual students as they advance their academic English proficiency and pursue undergraduate or graduate course work (in either degree or nondegree status).
As such programs arise, discussions of how best to determine pathway students\u27 English-language proficiency and academic readiness have arisen. Some university stakeholders appear interested in minimal language testing, crafting the easiest path into the university for prospective students. Others, however, argue that pathway students\u27 English proficiency should be assessed in order to determine these particular students\u27 admissibility and potential for retention and completion. Proponents of these stricter progression requirements argue for policies and program structures that require all pathway students to demonstrate a minimum English proficiency prior to full academic study. Still, others claim that any skills-based assessment of students\u27 English-language proficiency is inadequate and inaccurate, forcing the reduction of something fluid, uneven, and complex-language learning-into something discrete, measurable, and reportable
Numerical and asymptotic solutions of generalised Burgers’ equation
The generalised Burgers’ equation has been subject to a considerable amount of research on how the equation should behave according to asymptotic analysis, however there has been limited research verifying the asymptotic analysis. In order to verify the asymptotic analysis, this paper aims to run long time and detailed numerical simulations of Burgers’ equation by employing suitable rescalings of Burgers’ equation. It is hoped that this technique will make it possible to notice subtle changes in the shock structure which would otherwise be impossible to observe. The main aim of this paper is to validate the numerical methods used in order to allow further research into shock evolution where further relaxation effects will be included

Evolution of an Interprofessional Patient Skills Course with the Incorporation of Simulation Scenarios
A university level interprofessional patient care skills course including Nursing, Radiologic Sciences, and Respiratory Care students has evolved over 20 years. The course includes a lecture and laboratory portion with specific content and skills focused on principles common to the three disciplines. Students are placed in interprofessional groups during lab to practice and learn together including a simulation scenario on each week’s content. This educational strategy has enhanced the students’ teamwork and communication skills and prepared them to apply these skills to clinical practice. Further research is needed to look at IPE undergraduate healthcare course outcomes related to teamwork
Explaining two circumnuclear star forming rings in NGC5248
The distribution of gas in the central kiloparsec of a galaxy has a
dynamically rapid evolution. Nonaxisymmetries in the gravitational potential of
the galactic disk, such as a large scale stellar bar or spiral, can lead to
significant radial motion of gaseous material from larger radii to the central
region. The large influx of gas and the subsequent star formation keep the
central region constantly changing. However, the ability of gas to reach the
nucleus proper to fuel an AGN phase is not guaranteed. Gas inflow can be halted
at a circumnuclear star forming ring several hundred parsec away. The nearby
galaxy NGC5248 is especially interesting in this sense since it is said to host
2 circumnuclear star forming rings at 100pc and 370pc from its quiescent
nucleus. Here we present new subarcsecond PdBI+30m CO(2-1) emission line
observations of the central region. For the first time the molecular gas
distribution at the smallest stellar ring is resolved into a gas ring,
consistent with the presence of a quiescent nucleus. However, the molecular gas
shows no ring structure at the larger ring. We combine analyses of the gaseous
and stellar content in the central kiloparsec of this galaxy to understand the
gas distribution and dynamics of this star forming central region. We discuss
the probability of two scenarios leading to the current observations, given our
full understanding of this system, and discuss whether there are really two

Who pays the taxes?
The European Union is legally entitled to the revenue from (1) agricultural and sugar levies, (2) customs duties, (3) a 1 percent rate on each Member States' value added tax base, and (4) a resource on the basis of GNP. Currently, the Union is actively involved in the search for a fifth own revenue source. Therefore, the European Commission (DG XIX) has invited the authors to trace 'who pays the taxes'. As requested, our report gives a general account of methods to investigate impacts of taxation. More specifically, we have estimated the incidence of national tax systems (Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom), and the incidence of present own resources and prospective new (tax) resources of the European Union. Visual features drive the category-specific impairments on categorization tasks in a patient with object agnosia
Object and scene recognition both require mapping of incoming sensory information to existing conceptual knowledge about the world. A notable finding in brain-damaged patients is that they may show differentially impaired performance for specific categories, such as for “living exemplars”. While numerous patients with category-specific impairments have been reported, the explanations for these deficits remain controversial. In the current study, we investigate the ability of a brain injured patient with a well-established category-specific impairment of semantic memory to perform two categorization experiments: ‘natural’ vs. ‘manmade’ scenes (experiment 1) and objects (experiment 2). Our findings show that the pattern of categorical impairment does not respect the natural versus manmade distinction. This suggests that the impairments may be better explained by differences in visual features, rather than by category membership. Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) as ‘artificial animal models’ we further explored this idea. Results indicated that DCNNs with ‘lesions’ in higher order layers showed similar response patterns, with decreased relative performance for manmade scenes (experiment 1) and natural objects (experiment 2), even though they have no semantic category knowledge, apart from a mapping between pictures and labels. Collectively, these results suggest that the direction of category-effects to a large extent depends, at least in MS′ case, on the degree of perceptual differentiation called for, and not semantic knowledge
