An innovation approach to sampled-data filtering is presented. First, the definition of the estimation covariance e for a sampled-data system is given, then the sampled-data filtering problem is reduced to the Kalman filter design problem for a fictitious discrete-time system, and finally, an effective method is developed to design discrete-time Kalman filters in such a way that the resulting sampled-data estimation covariance achieves a prescribed value. We derive both the existence conditions and the explicit expression of the desired filters and provide an illustrative numerical example to demonstrate the directness and flexibility of the present design metho

Optical stark effect in the 2-photon spectrum of NO

    Get PDF
A large optical Stark effect has been observed in the two-photon spectrum X(2)Pi yields A(2)Sigma(+)_ in NO. It is explained as a near-resonant process in which the upper state of the two-photon transition is perturbed by interactions with higher-lying electronic states coupled by the laser field. A theoretical analysis is presented along with coupling parameters determined from ab initio wave functions. The synthetic spectrum reproduces the major experimental features

Atomic Entanglement vs Photonic Visibility for Quantum Criticality of Hybrid System

    Get PDF
To characterize the novel quantum phase transition for a hybrid system consisting of an array of coupled cavities and two-level atoms doped in each cavity, we study the atomic entanglement and photonic visibility in comparison with the quantum fluctuation of total excitations. Analytical and numerical simulation results show the happen of quantum critical phenomenon similar to the Mott insulator to superfluid transition. Here, the contour lines respectively representing the atomic entanglement, photonic visibility and excitation variance in the phase diagram are consistent in the vicinity of the non-analytic locus of atomic concurrences.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

An Automatic System to Discriminate Malignant from Benign Massive Lesions on Mammograms

Mammography is widely recognized as the most reliable technique for early detection of breast cancers. Automated or semi-automated computerized classification schemes can be very useful in assisting radiologists with a second opinion about the visual diagnosis of breast lesions, thus leading to a reduction in the number of unnecessary biopsies. We present a computer-aided diagnosis (CADi) system for the characterization of massive lesions in mammograms, whose aim is to distinguish malignant from benign masses. The CADi system we realized is based on a three-stage algorithm: a) a segmentation technique extracts the contours of the massive lesion from the image; b) sixteen features based on size and shape of the lesion are computed; c) a neural classifier merges the features into an estimated likelihood of malignancy. A dataset of 226 massive lesions (109 malignant and 117 benign) has been used in this study. The system performances have been evaluated terms of the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, obtaining A_z = 0.80+-0.04 as the estimated area under the ROC curve.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; Proceedings of the ITBS 2005, 3rd International Conference on Imaging Technologies in Biomedical Sciences, 25-28 September 2005, Milos Island, Greec

Equilibrium moisture model of ceramic green body during drying

The drying stage of ceramic green body is crucial in the production process, and the equilibrium moisture content achieved by green body drying is very important for the green body firing stage. Based on the modified Oswin equilibrium moisture model, the influence of hot air temperature and relative humidity on the equilibrium moisture content of SiO2 and Al2O3 ceramic composite green body drying was studied through hot air drying experiments, and according to the experimental data, the equilibrium moisture content data was fitted by the least squares method to determine the equilibrium moisture content model

Design of a five-axis ultra-precision micro-milling machine—UltraMill. Part 2: Integrated dynamic modelling, design optimisation and analysis

    Get PDF
Using computer models to predict the dynamic performance of ultra-precision machine tools can help manufacturers to substantially reduce the lead time and cost of developing new machines. However, the use of electronic drives on such machines is becoming widespread, the machine dynamic performance depending not only on the mechanical structure and components but also on the control system and electronic drives. Bench-top ultra-precision machine tools are highly desirable for the micro-manufacturing of high-accuracy micro-mechanical components. However, the development is still at the nascent stage and hence lacks standardised guidelines. Part 2 of this two-part paper proposes an integrated approach, which permits analysis and optimisation of the entire machine dynamic performance at the early design stage. Based on the proposed approach, the modelling and simulation process of a novel five-axis bench-top ultra-precision micro-milling machine tool—UltraMill—is presented. The modelling and simulation cover the dynamics of the machine structure, the moving components, the control system and the machining process and are used to predict the entire machine performance of two typical configurations
