From insulator to quantum Hall liquid at low magnetic fields
We have performed low-temperature transport measurements on a GaAs
two-dimensional electron system at low magnetic fields. Multiple
temperature-independent points and accompanying oscillations are observed in
the longitudinal resistivity between the low-field insulator and the quantum
Hall (QH) liquid. Our results support the existence of an intermediate regime,
where the amplitudes of magneto-oscillations can be well described by
conventional Shubnikov-de Haas theory, between the low-field insulator and QH
liquid.Comment: Magneto-oscillations governed by Shubnikov-de Haas theory are

Oxygen stabilization induced enhancement in superconducting characteristics of high-Tc oxides
In an attempt to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of the high temperature superconducting oxides, high T(sub c) composites were prepared composed of the 123 compounds and AgO. The presence of extra oxygen due to the decomposition of AgO at high temperature is found to stabilize the superconducting 123 phase. Ag is found to serve as clean flux for grain growth and precipitates as pinning center. Consequently, almost two orders of magnitude enhancement in critical current densities were also observed in these composites. In addition, these composites also show much improvement in workability and shape formation. On the other hand, proper oxygen treatment of Y5Ba6Cu11Oy was found to possibly stabilize superconducting phase with T(sub c) near 250 K. I-V, ac susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements indicate the existence of this ultra high T(sub c) phase in this compound. Detailed structure, microstructure, electrical, magnetic and thermal studies of the superconducting composites and the ultra high T(sub c) compound are presented and discussed
Transition Temperature of a Uniform Imperfect Bose Gas
We calculate the transition temperature of a uniform dilute Bose gas with
repulsive interactions, using a known virial expansion of the equation of
state. We find that the transition temperature is higher than that of an ideal
gas, with a fractional increase K_0(na^3)^{1/6}, where n is the density and a
is the S-wave scattering length, and K_0 is a constant given in the paper. This
disagrees with all existing results, analytical or numerical. It agrees exactly
in magnitude with a result due to Toyoda, but has the opposite sign.Comment: Email correspondence to [email protected] ; 2 pages using REVTe
Solid rocket booster internal flow analysis by highly accurate adaptive computational methods
The primary objective of this project was to develop an adaptive finite element flow solver for simulating internal flows in the solid rocket booster. Described here is a unique flow simulator code for analyzing highly complex flow phenomena in the solid rocket booster. New methodologies and features incorporated into this analysis tool are described
A variational principle for fluid sloshing with vorticity, dynamically coupled to vessel motion
A variational principle is derived for two-dimensional incompressible
rotational fluid flow with a free surface in a moving vessel when both the
vessel and fluid motion are to be determined. The fluid is represented by a
stream function and the vessel motion is represented by a path in the planar
Euclidean group. Novelties in the formulation include how the pressure boundary
condition is treated, the introduction of a stream function into the
Euler-Poincar\'e variations, the derivation of free surface variations, and how
the equations for the vessel path in the Euclidean group, coupled to the fluid
motion, are generated automatically.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure
