    Fatigue Life Assessment of 9mm Thickness Low Carbon Steel with Multi-Objective Optimized Welding Process / Azrriq Zainul Abidin...[et al.]

    Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is one of the popular methods in joining metal in manufacturing industries. However the transient thermal stresses and non-uniform distribution of elastic strains is produced by the weld causes residual stresses and distortion, thus affecting the fatigue performance of the welded structure. The used of Robotic Welding (RW) allows this welding process parameters to be controlled significantly to improve the welding quality. First, Multi-Objective Taguchi Method (MTM) were used to analyse optimum parameters value which started application of common Taguchi methods (L8) Orthogonal Array (OA) and Total Normalized Quality Loss (TNQL) followed by ANOVA under simultaneous consideration response factors. The value was furthermore analysed by applying Multi-Signal to Noise Ratio (MSNR). The two (2) optimize welding parameter ranges are selected to be used for fatigue life assessment on the 9 mm plate which is labelled as set A and B. Tensile test was carried out on the specimen prior to fatigue testing to know the value of yield strength and UTS of the specimens. The fatigue test was carried out on three (3) type of specimen with one sample without any welding as controlled specimen. It can be concluded that welding parameters of set A is more superior for fatigue performance of this 9 mm low carbon steel plate

    Enhancing Biomedical Text Summarization Using Semantic Relation Extraction

    Automatic text summarization for a biomedical concept can help researchers to get the key points of a certain topic from large amount of biomedical literature efficiently. In this paper, we present a method for generating text summary for a given biomedical concept, e.g., H1N1 disease, from multiple documents based on semantic relation extraction. Our approach includes three stages: 1) We extract semantic relations in each sentence using the semantic knowledge representation tool SemRep. 2) We develop a relation-level retrieval method to select the relations most relevant to each query concept and visualize them in a graphic representation. 3) For relations in the relevant set, we extract informative sentences that can interpret them from the document collection to generate text summary using an information retrieval based method. Our major focus in this work is to investigate the contribution of semantic relation extraction to the task of biomedical text summarization. The experimental results on summarization for a set of diseases show that the introduction of semantic knowledge improves the performance and our results are better than the MEAD system, a well-known tool for text summarization

    Treatable Traits in Elderly Asthmatics from the Australasian Severe Asthma Network: A Prospective Cohort Study.

    BACKGROUND: Data on treatable traits (TTs) in different populations are limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess TTs in elderly patients with asthma and compare them to younger patients, to evaluate the association of TTs with future exacerbations, and to develop an exacerbation prediction model. METHODS: We consecutively recruited 521 participants at West China Hospital, Sichuan University based on the Australasian Severe Asthma Network, classified as elderly (n = 62) and nonelderly (n = 459). Participants underwent a multidimensional assessment to characterize the TTs and were then followed up for 12 months. TTs and their relationship with future exacerbations were described. Based on the TTs and asthma control levels, an exacerbation prediction model was developed, and the overall performance was externally validated in an independent cohort. RESULTS: A total of 38 TTs were assessed. Elderly patients with asthma had more chronic metabolic diseases, fixed airflow limitation, emphysema, and neutrophilic inflammation, whereas nonelderly patients with asthma exhibited more allergic characteristics and psychiatric diseases. Nine traits were associated with increased future exacerbations, of which exacerbation prone, upper respiratory infection-induced asthma attack, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression were the strongest. A model including exacerbation prone, psychiatric disease, cardiovascular disease, upper respiratory infection-induced asthma attack, noneosinophilic inflammation, cachexia, food allergy, and asthma control was developed to predict exacerbation risk and showed good performance. CONCLUSIONS: TTs can be systematically assessed in elderly patients with asthma, some of which are associated with future exacerbations, proving their clinical utility of evaluating them. A model based on TTs can be used to predict exacerbation risk in people with asthma

    Numerical relativity has made big strides over the last decade. A number of problems that have plagued the field for years have now been mostly solved. This progress has transformed numerical relativity into a powerful tool to explore fundamental problems in physics and astrophysics, and I present here three representative examples.     Type IV Pili of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans Are Necessary for Sliding, Twitching Motility, and Adherence

    We used conventional methods to investigate the mechanism by which Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans colonizes a solid surface by assessing pili-mediated sliding, twitching motility, and adherence. A. ferrooxidans slided to form circular oxidized zones around each colony. This suggested that slide motility occurs through pili or flagella, though A. ferrooxidans strains ATCC 19859 and ATCC 23270 lack flagella. The results of reverse transcription-PCR demonstrated that the putative major pili gene of A. ferrooxidans strains ATCC 19859, ATCC 23270, and BY3 genes were transcribed. Culture of A. ferrooxidans between silicone gel and glass led to the production of type IV pili and the formation of rough twitching motility zones. When the bacteria were grown on lean ore cubes, pyrite was colonized readily by A. ferrooxidans and there is a correlation between pilus expression and strong attachment. However, non-pili bacteria attached minimally to the mineral surface. The results show a correlation between these functions and pilus expression

    CD4+ T Cell-Derived IL-2 Signals during Early Priming Advances Primary CD8+ T Cell Responses

    Stimulating naïve CD8+ T cells with specific antigens and costimulatory signals is insufficient to induce optimal clonal expansion and effector functions. In this study, we show that the activation and differentiation of CD8+ T cells require IL-2 provided by activated CD4+ T cells at the initial priming stage within 0–2.5 hours after stimulation. This critical IL-2 signal from CD4+ cells is mediated through the IL-2Rβγ of CD8+ cells, which is independent of IL-2Rα. The activation of IL-2 signaling advances the restriction point of the cell cycle, and thereby expedites the entry of antigen-stimulated CD8+ T-cell into the S phase. Besides promoting cell proliferation, IL-2 stimulation increases the amount of IFNγ and granzyme B produced by CD8+ T cells. Furthermore, IL-2 at priming enhances the ability of P14 effector cells generated by antigen activation to eradicate B16.gp33 tumors in vivo. Therefore, our studies demonstrate that a full CD8+ T-cell response is elicited by a critical temporal function of IL-2 released from CD4+ T cells, providing mechanistic insights into the regulation of CD8+ T cell activation and differentiation
