Evaluation of techniques for disseminating parent -child interaction therapy

Considerable advancements have been made in the last decade in developing, identifying, and evaluating empirically supported treatment programs (ESTs). Less progress has been made in the dissemination of these promising programs. This trend may be due, in part, to a lack of systematic studies investigating methods to distribute ESTs successfully so that both skills and knowledge are acquired. More information is needed regarding the effectiveness of existing treatment dissemination modalities (e.g., treatment manuals, workshops) as well as therapist characteristics that might impact training success.;The purposes of the current investigation were to: (a) evaluate a treatment manual as a method for dissemination of one child EST, (b) evaluate two workshop formats for delivering information relevant to an EST, and (c) provide preliminary data on therapist characteristics which may be associated with successful adoption of an EST. Toward these goals, 42 community-based, masters- and doctoral-level clinicians participated in the current study. Participants were assigned to one of two training groups (didactic or experiential). Behavior observation and self-report data were collected to assess three levels of training outcome: knowledge, skill, and satisfaction across four data points.;Results suggest that reading a treatment manual is useful but not sufficient. Significant improvements were noted in participants\u27 knowledge and skill measures after reading; however, additional training was necessary for participants to reach mastery of knowledge and skills. Results also indicate that for the knowledge, skill, and satisfaction variables assessed, experiential and didactic training were equally effective. Concerning though is that after a two day intensive training, few participants demonstrated mastery of skills. In terms of therapist characteristics predicating success, degree type, but not theoretical orientation, was associated with training success. Participants with a MSW degree were significantly more likely that those with MA/MS degrees to reach skill mastery. Limitations of this study include selection and number of participants, frequent assessment, assessment of basic skills, and a lack of standardized and validated dependent variables. Several directions are highlighted to address these limitations. Findings indicate that ESTs like Parent-Child Interaction Therapy can be widely disseminated. Additional research clearly is needed; however, this study offers a unique contribution to the literature in that it is one of the first efforts to systematically examine techniques for disseminating ESTs

The Cape Flats Urban Park : guidelines for multifunctional open space planning

    Get PDF
Bibliography: leaves 110-120.Over time, the lack of coherent thought concerning the potential roles of urban open spaces has resulted in the necessity of urban management to become vigilant with regard to the collective aspects of city life. Urban open spaces are especially significant in this regard. In giving attention to the scale, continuity, distribution and status of public open space in Cape Town and indeed, in all South African urban centres, developing the role of public spaces in the lives of the urban poor is especially crucial. This study examines the concept of the ability of multifunctional urban open space in playing the role of a socio-economic developmental tool. In this endeavour, two fundamental approaches are used. The first investigates the significance of open space and examines the history of open space and park development. Cases of successful park developments are presented so as to identify central conceptual ideas and certain key success factors. The second uses a local park proposal, the Cape Flats Urban Park, as an instrument with which to explore the concept. This involves integrating the notions of natural process needs and human needs so as to inform use. Accordingly, a natural systems analysis discovers the particular ecological needs of the area through factors of opportunity and constraint and a potential park user analysis discovers the characteristics and needs of human users, in order to discern what role the urban park could play in enabling socio-economic development and improving quality of life. Consequently, resultant guidelines for planning successful multifunctional open spaces are summarised, and further considerations and guiding principles for multifunctional open space planning are presented. These insights are applied and determine broad distributional tendencies, which may assist towards the creation of a successful plan for the Cape Flats Urban Park and other open spaces. The procedure in which these investigations were followed through was primarily through an extensive literature survey, supplemented by personal observation, map surveys and informal interviews. The findings of this study endorse the proposal for a multifunctional Cape Flats Urban Park, as this park could play conservation, resource preservation, flood control, productive, economic, ceremonial, cultural, educational, health improving, recreational and community-building roles. As such, urban open spaces have the potential to become multifaceted resources, with both intangible and tangible benefits for nature and for people, all of which can improve the quality of life for city dwellers, by improving the quality of the environment in which they live

Web-Based Training Methods for Behavioral Health Providers: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
There has been an increase in the use of web-based training methods to train behavioral health providers in evidence-based practices. This systematic review focuses solely on the efficacy of web-based training methods for training behavioral health providers. A literature search yielded 45 articles meeting inclusion criteria. Results indicated that the serial instruction training method was the most commonly studied web-based training method. While the current review has several notable limitations, findings indicate that participating in a web-based training may result in greater post-training knowledge and skill, in comparison to baseline scores. Implications and recommendations for future research on web-based training methods are discussed
