Structural changes and effect of denopamine on alveolar fluid clearance in hypoxic rat lungs
Terbutaline (β2-adrenergic agonist) can increase alveolar fluid clearance (AFC) under physiologic and pathologic conditions. It is unknown whether 1-adrenergic agonists also increase AFC under pathologic conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of denopamine (β1- adrenergic agonist ) on AFC in hypoxic lung injury and the possible mechanisms involved. Hypoxic rats were exposed to 10% oxygen. 10-5mol/L denopamine alone or combined with β receptor antagonists, Na+ channel blocker, or Na+/K+-ATPase blocker were perfused into the alveolar space of rats exposed to 10% oxygen for 48 h. AFC and total lung water content (TLW) were measured. AFC did not change for the first 24 h but then decreased after 48h exposure to 10% oxygen. The perfusion of denopamine significantly increased AFC in normoxic and hypoxic rats. The AFC- stimulating effect of denopamine lowered with amiloride (a Na+ channel blocker) and ouabain (a Na+/K+-ATPase inhibitor) by 35 and 53%, respectively. Colchicine significantly inhibited the effect of denopamine. Denopamine can increase the AFC during hypoxic lung injury in rats and accelerate the absorption of pulmonary edema.Key words: 1-Adrenergic agonist, hypoxia, pulmonary edema, alveolar epithelium
Magnetic quantum phase transition of cold atoms in an optical lattice
We propose a scheme to investigate the magnetic phase transition of cold atoms confined in an optical lattice. We also demonstrate how to get coupled two-leg spin ladders which display a phase transition from a spin liquid to magnetic ordered state in two-dimensional optical lattice. LAACAD: Load bAlancing k-area coverage through autonomous deployment in wireless sensor networks
Session 6B: Coverage & LocalizationAlthough the problem of k-area coverage has been intensively investigated for dense wireless sensor networks (WSNs), how to arrive at a k-coverage sensor deployment that optimizes certain objectives in relatively sparse WSNs still faces both theoretical and practical difficulties. In this paper, we present a practical algorithm LAACAD (Load bAlancing k-Area Coverage through Autonomous Deployment) to move sensor nodes toward k-area coverage, aiming at minimizing the maximum sensing range required by the nodes. LAACAD enables purely autonomous node deployment as it only entails localized computations. We prove the convergence of the algorithm, as well as the (local) optimality of the output. We also show that our optimization objective is closely related to other frequently considered objectives. Therefore, our practical algorithm design also contributes to the theoretical understanding of the k-area coverage problem. Finally, we use extensive simulation results both to confirm our theoretical claims and to demonstrate the efficacy of LAACAD. © 2012 IEEE.postprin
Biomechanical study of the funnel technique applied in thoracic pedicle screw replacement
Background: Funnel technique is a method used for the insertion of screw into thoracic pedicle.Aim: To evaluate the biomechanical characteristics of thoracic pedicle screw placement using the Funnel technique, trying to provide biomechanical basis for clinical application of this technology.Methods: 14 functional spinal units (T6 to T10) were selected from thoracic spine specimens of 14 fresh adult cadavers, and randomly divided into two groups, including Funnel technique group (n=7) and Magerl technique group (n=7). The displacement-stiffness and pull-out strength in all kinds of position were tested and compared.Results: Two fixed groups were significantly higher than that of the intact state (P<0.05) in the spinal central axial direction, compression, anterior flexion, posterior bending, lateral bending, axial torsion, but there were no significant differences between two fixed groups (P>0.05). The mean pull-out strength in Funnel technique group (789.09±27.33) was lower than that in Magerl technique group (P<0.05).Conclusions: The Funnel technique for the insertion point of posterior bone is a safe and accurate technique for pedicle screw placement. It exhibited no effects on the stiffness of spinal column, but decreased the pull-out strength of pedicle screw. Therefore, the funnel technique in the thoracic spine affords an alternative for the standard screw placement.Keywords: Thoracic; Pedicle screws; Biomechanics; Funnel techniqu
The effect of moderate alcohol consumption on adiponectin oligomers and muscle oxidative capacity: a human intervention study
Aims/hypothesis The aim of this study was to investigate whether moderate alcohol consumption increases plasma high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin and/or muscle oxidative capacity. Materials and methods Eleven lean (BMI 18 - 25 kg/m(2)) and eight overweight ( BMI >= 27 kg/m(2)) men consumed 100 ml whisky (similar to 32 g alcohol) or water daily for 4 weeks in a randomised, controlled, crossover trial. After each treatment period, muscle biopsies and fasting blood samples were collected. Results Adiponectin concentrations increased ( p <0.001) by 12.5% after 4 weeks of moderate alcohol consumption. Moderate alcohol consumption tended to increase HMW adiponectin by 57% ( p= 0.07) and medium molecular weight adiponectin by 12.5% ( p= 0.07), but not low molecular weight (LMW) adiponectin. Skeletal muscle citrate synthase, cytochrome c oxidase and beta-3-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase (beta-HAD) activity were not changed after moderate alcohol consumption, but an interaction between alcohol consumption and BMI was observed for cytochrome c oxidase ( p= 0.072) and citrate synthase ( p= 0.102) activity. Among lean men, moderate alcohol consumption tended to increase cytochrome c oxidase ( p= 0.08) and citrate synthase activity ( p= 0.12) by 23 and 26%, respectively, but not among overweight men. In particular, plasma HMW adiponectin correlated positively with activities of skeletal muscle citrate synthase ( r= 0.64, p= 0.009), cytochrome c oxidase ( p= 0.59, p= 0.009) and beta-HAD ( r= 0.46, p= 0.056), while such correlation was not present for LMW adiponectin. Whole-body insulin sensitivity and intramyocellular triacylglycerol content were not affected by moderate alcohol consumption. Conclusions/interpretation Moderate alcohol consumption increases adiponectin concentrations, and in particular HMW adiponectin. Concentrations of HMW adiponectin in particular were positively associated with skeletal muscle oxidative capacity
Direct Measurement of B(D0->phiX0) and B(D+->phiX+)
The first measurement of B(0->phi X0) and an upper limit for B(D+->phi X+)
are determined from 22.3 pb-1 of e+e- annihilation data at a C. M. energy of
4.03 GeV. The data were recorded by the Beijing Spectrometer (BES) at BEPC. A
recoil charge method is applied for the first time to charm threshold data to
determine the charge of the D meson in the recoil from 9054+-309+-416
reconstructed D0, D+ mesons. The branching fractions B(D->phiX0)
=(1.71+0.76-0.71+-0.17)%, and B(D+->phiX+) <1.8% are determined from 10 events
with a reconstructed D and a recoiling phi. In addition, a 90% C.L. upper limit
of B(D+->phi e+X0)<1.6% is determined from a search for semileptonic decays of

Inhibition of PC cell-derived growth factor (PCDGF)/granulin-epithelin precursor (GEP) decreased cell proliferation and invasion through downregulation of cyclin D and CDK 4 and inactivation of MMP-2
BACKGROUND: PC cell-derived growth factor (PCDGF), also called epithelin/granulin precursor (GEP), is an 88-kDa secreted glycoprotein with the ability to stimulate cell proliferation in an autocrine fashion. In addition, some studies indicated that PCDGF participated in invasion, metastasis and survival of cancer cells by regulating cell migration, adhesion and proliferation. Yet the effects of PCDGF on proliferation and invasion of ovarian cancer cells in vitro and the mechanisms by which PCDGF mediates biological behaviors of ovarian cancer have rarely been reported. In the present study we investigated whether and how PCDGF/GEP mediated cell proliferation and invasion in ovarian cancer. METHODS: PCDGF/GEP expression level in three human ovarian cancer cell lines of different invasion potential were detected by RT-PCR and western blot. Effects of inhibition of PCDGF expression on cell proliferation and invasion capability were determined by MTT assay and Boyden chamber assay. Expression levels of cyclin D1 and CDK4 and MMP-2 activity were evaluated in a pilot study. RESULTS: PCDGF mRNA and protein were expressed at a high level in SW626 and A2780 and at a low level in SKOV3. PCDGF expression level correlated well with malignant phenotype including proliferation and invasion in ovarian cancer cell lines. In addition, the proliferation rate and invasion index decreased after inhibition of PCDGF expression by antisense PCDGF cDNA transfection in SW626 and A2780. Furthermore expression of CyclinD1 and CDK4 were downregulated and MMP-2 was inactivated after PCDGF inhibition in the pilot study. CONCLUSION: PCDGF played an important role in stimulating proliferation and promoting invasion in ovarian cancer. Inhibition of PCDGF decreased proliferation and invasion capability through downregulation of cyclin D1 and CDK4 and inactivation of MMP-2. PCDGF could serve as a potential therapeutic target in ovarian cancer
Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
The decay channel
is studied using a sample of events collected
by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is
observed in the invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit
with an -wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of
and a
narrow width that is at the 90% confidence level.
These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width

Active microrheology and simultaneous visualization of sheared phospholipid monolayers
Two-dimensional films of surface-active agents—from phospholipids and proteins to nanoparticles and colloids—stabilize fluid interfaces, which are essential to the science, technology and engineering of everyday life. The 2D nature of interfaces present unique challenges and opportunities: coupling between the 2D films and the bulk fluids complicates the measurement of surface dynamic properties, but allows the interfacial microstructure to be directly visualized during deformation. Here we present a novel technique that combines active microrheology with fluorescence microscopy to visualize fluid interfaces as they deform under applied stress, allowing structure and rheology to be correlated on the micron-scale in monolayer films. We show that even simple, single-component lipid monolayers can exhibit viscoelasticity, history dependence, a yield stress and hours-long time scales for elastic recoil and aging. Simultaneous visualization of the monolayer under stress shows that the rich dynamical response results from the cooperative dynamics and deformation of liquid-crystalline domains and their boundaries
