Analytical solution of generalized Burton--Cabrera--Frank equations for growth and post--growth equilibration on vicinal surfaces
We investigate growth on vicinal surfaces by molecular beam epitaxy making
use of a generalized Burton--Cabrera--Frank model. Our primary aim is to
propose and implement a novel analytical program based on a perturbative
solution of the non--linear equations describing the coupled adatom and dimer
kinetics. These equations are considered as originating from a fully
microscopic description that allows the step boundary conditions to be directly
formulated in terms of the sticking coefficients at each step. As an example,
we study the importance of diffusion barriers for adatoms hopping down
descending steps (Schwoebel effect) during growth and post-growth equilibration
of the surface.Comment: 16 pages, REVTeX 3.0, IC-DDV-94-00
Hera Events, Tevatron Jets, and the Uncertainty On Quarks At Large X
The recently reported excess of events at HERA compared to QCD calculations
impels us to examine all possible Standard Model explanations before invoking
``new physics''. We explore the possibility of adding an unusual, but small,
component of additional quarks at large x (beyond x>0.75) as a way to increase
the predicted SM cross-section in the HERA kinematic region by the QCD
evolution feed-down effect. We describe various scenarios under which this can
be achieved while maintaining good global fits to all established data sets.
This implies a much larger SM uncertainty than commonly assumed. In addition,
the modified parton distributions provide another possible mechanism to account
for the CDF high-pt jet excess which occurs at similar x and Q^2 values.Comment: 13 page Latex, 8 ps figures, replaced with modifications to the tex
Generation of entangled states and error protection from adiabatic avoided level crossings
We consider the environment-affected dynamics of self-interacting
particles living in one-dimensional double wells. Two topics are dealt with.
First, we consider the production of entangled states of two-level systems. We
show that by adiabatically varying the well biases we may dynamically generate
maximally entangled states, starting from initially unentangled product states.
Entanglement degradation due to a common type of environmental influence is
then computed by solving a master equation. However, we also demonstrate that
entanglement production is unaffected if the system-environment coupling is of
the type that induces ``motional narrowing''. As our second but related topic,
we construct a different master equation that seamlessly merges error
protection/detection dynamics for quantum information with the environmental
couplings responsible for producing the errors in the first place. Adiabatic
avoided crossing schemes are used in both topics.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Minor changes. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Multiorder coherent Raman scattering of a quantum probe field
We study the multiorder coherent Raman scattering of a quantum probe field in
a far-off-resonance medium with a prepared coherence. Under the conditions of
negligible dispersion and limited bandwidth, we derive a Bessel-function
solution for the sideband field operators. We analytically and numerically
calculate various quantum statistical characteristics of the sideband fields.
We show that the multiorder coherent Raman process can replicate the
statistical properties of a single-mode quantum probe field into a broad comb
of generated Raman sidebands. We also study the mixing and modulation of photon
statistical properties in the case of two-mode input. We show that the prepared
Raman coherence and the medium length can be used as control parameters to
switch a sideband field from one type of photon statistics to another type, or
from a non-squeezed state to a squeezed state and vice versa.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Bell-inequality violation with "thermal" radiation
The model of a quantum-optical device for a conditional preparation of
entangled states from input mixed states is presented. It is demonstrated that
even thermal or pseudo-thermal radiation can be entangled in such a way, that
Bell-inequalities are violated
Dynamic Scaling and Two-Dimensional High-Tc Superconductors
There has been ongoing debate over the critical behavior of two-dimensional
superconductors; in particular for high Tc superconductors. The conventional
view is that a Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition occurs as long as
finite size effects do not obscure the transition. However, there have been
recent suggestions that a different transition actually occurs which
incorporates aspects of both the dynamic scaling theory of Fisher, Fisher, and
Huse and the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition. Of general interest is
that this modified transition apparently has a universal dynamic critical
exponent. Some have countered that this apparent universal behavior is rooted
in a newly proposed finite-size scaling theory; one that also incorporates
scaling and conventional two-dimensional theory. To investigate these issues we
study DC voltage versus current data of a 12 angstrom thick YBCO film. We find
that the newly proposed scaling theories have intrinsic flexibility that is
relevant to the analysis of the experiments. In particular, the data scale
according to the modified transition for arbitrarily defined critical
temperatures between 0 K and 19.5 K, and the temperature range of a successful
scaling collapse is related directly to the sensitivity of the measurement.
This implies that the apparent universal exponent is due to the intrinsic
flexibility rather than some real physical property. To address this intrinsic
flexibility, we propose a criterion which would give conclusive evidence for
phase transitions in two-dimensional superconductors. We conclude by reviewing
results to see if our criterion is satisfied.Comment: 14 page
Generation of atom-photon entangled states in atomic Bose-Einstein condensate via electromagnetically induced transparency
In this paper, we present a method to generate continuous-variable-type
entangled states between photons and atoms in atomic Bose-Einstein condensate
(BEC). The proposed method involves an atomic BEC with three internal states, a
weak quantized probe laser and a strong classical coupling laser, which form a
three-level Lambda-shaped BEC system. We consider a situation where the BEC is
in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with the coupling laser being
much stronger than the probe laser. In this case, the upper and intermediate
levels are unpopulated, so that their adiabatic elimination enables an
effective two-mode model involving only the atomic field at the lowest internal
level and the quantized probe laser field. Atom-photon quantum entanglement is
created through laser-atom and inter-atomic interactions, and two-photon
detuning. We show how to generate atom-photon entangled coherent states and
entangled states between photon (atom) coherent states and atom-(photon-)
macroscopic quantum superposition (MQS) states, and between photon-MQS and
atom-MQS states.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur
Nuclear Structure Functions in the Large x Large Q^2 Kinematic Region in Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering
Data from the CCFR E770 Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiment
at Fermilab contain events with large Bjorken x (x>0.7) and high momentum
transfer (Q^2>50 (GeV/c)^2). A comparison of the data with a model based on no
nuclear effects at large x, shows a significant excess of events in the data.
Addition of Fermi gas motion of the nucleons in the nucleus to the model does
not explain the excess. Adding a higher momentum tail due to the formation of
``quasi-deuterons'' makes some improvement. An exponentially falling F_2
\propto e^-s(x-x_0) at large x, predicted by ``multi-quark clusters'' and
``few-nucleon correlations'', can describe the data. A value of s=8.3 \pm
0.7(stat.)\pm 0.7(sys.) yields the best agreement with the data.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Sibmitted to PR
Associated charged Higgs and W boson production in the MSSM at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
We investigate the viability of observing charged Higgs bosons (H^+/-)
produced in association with W bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, using
the leptonic decay H^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau and hadronic W-decay, within different
scenarios of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with both real
and complex parameters. Performing a parton level study we show how the
irreducible Standard Model background from W+2 jets can be controlled by
applying appropriate cuts and find that the size of a possible signal depends
on the cuts needed to suppress QCD backgrounds and misidentifications. In the
standard maximal mixing scenario of the MSSM we find a viable signal for large
tan(beta) and intermediate H^+/- masses (~m_t) when using optimistic cuts
whereas for more pessimistic ones we only find a viable signal for very large
tan(beta) (>~50). We have also investigated a special class of MSSM scenarios
with large mass-splittings among the heavy Higgs bosons where the cross-section
can be resonantly enhanced by factors up to one hundred, with a strong
dependence on the CP-violating phases. Even so we find that the signal after
cuts remains small except for small masses (~< m_t) with optimistic cuts.
Finally, in all the scenarios we have investigated we have only found small
CP-asymmetries.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, version to appear in Euro. Phys. J.
Search for charginos in e+e- interactions at sqrt(s) = 189 GeV
An update of the searches for charginos and gravitinos is presented, based on
a data sample corresponding to the 158 pb^{-1} recorded by the DELPHI detector
in 1998, at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. No evidence for a signal was
found. The lower mass limits are 4-5 GeV/c^2 higher than those obtained at a
centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The (\mu,M_2) MSSM domain excluded by
combining the chargino searches with neutralino searches at the Z resonance
implies a limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino which, for a heavy
sneutrino, is constrained to be above 31.0 GeV/c^2 for tan(beta) \geq 1.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure
