The morality of organization versus organized members: Organizations are attributed more control and responsibility for negative outcomes than are equivalent members
Seven experiments demonstrate that framing an organizational entity (the target) as an organization (âan organization comprised of its constituent membersâ) versus its members (âconstituent members comprising an organizationâ) increases attribution of responsibility to the target following a negative outcome, despite identical information conveyed. Specifically, the target in the organization (vs. members) frame was perceived to have more control over a negative outcome, which led to an increased attribution of responsibility (Studies 1â3). This effect surfaced for both for-profits and nonprofits (Study 5). However, when the target in the members frame had explicit control over the outcome (Study 3), or when participants held strong beliefs in individual free will (Study 4), the effect of frame on responsibility attenuated. To the extent that framing increased perceptions of control, punishment for the target also increased (Studies 6a and 6b). By demonstrating how a subtle shift in framing can impact peopleâs perceptions and judgments of organizations, we reveal important knowledge about how people understand organizations and the psychological nature of organizational and group perception

Direct evidence for thymic function in adult humans.
The understanding of human thymic function and evaluation of its contribution to T cell homeostasis are matters of great importance. Here we report the development of a novel assay to quantitate the frequency and diversity of recent thymic emigrants (RTEs) in the peripheral blood of humans. Such cells were defined by the presence of T cell receptor (TCR) rearrangement deletion circles (DCs), episomal byproducts of TCR-beta V(D)J rearrangement. DCs were detected in T cells in the thymus, cord blood, and adult peripheral blood. In the peripheral blood of adults aged 22 to 76 years, their frequency was highest in the CD4(+)CD45RA(+) CD62L(+) subpopulation of naive T cells. TCR DCs were also observed in other subpopulations of peripheral blood T cells, including those with the CD4(+)CD45RO(-)CD62L(+) and CD4(+)CD45RO(+)CD62L(+) phenotypes. RTEs were observed to have more than one Vbeta rearrangement, suggesting that replenishment of the repertoire in the adult is at least oligoclonal. These results demonstrate that the normal adult thymus continues to contribute, even in older individuals, a diverse set of new T cells to the peripheral circulation
Treatment Patterns for Early Pregnancy Failure in Michigan
Abstract Aims: We describe current treatment patterns for early pregnancy failure (EPF) among women enrolled in two Michigan health plans. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of EPF treatment among Michigan Medicaid enrollees between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2004, and enrollees of a university-affiliated health plan between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2005. Episodes were identified by the presence of a diagnostic code for EPF. Surgical treatment was distinguished from nonsurgical management using procedure codes. Facility charges, procedure, and place of service codes were used to determine whether a procedure was done in an office as opposed to an operating room. Cases without a claim for surgical uterine evacuation were examined for a misoprostol pharmacy claim and, if present, were classified as medical management. Cases without a procedure or pharmacy claim were classified as expectant management. Results: Respectively, we identified 21,311 and 1,493 episodes of EPF in the Medicaid and university-affiliated health plan databases, respectively. Women enrolled in Medicaid were more likely to be treated with surgery than were enrollees of the university-affiliated health plan (35.3 vs. 18.0%, respectively, p<0.000). Among Medicaid enrollees, only 0.5% of surgical evacuations occurred in the office, but office procedures were common among enrollees of the university-affiliated health plan (30.5%, p<0.000). The proportion of cases managed with misoprostol was <1% in both groups. Caucasian race and age were both associated with having a surgical uterine evacuation (p<0.001). Conclusions: EPF is primarily being treated with expectant management or surgical evacuation in an operating room and may not reflect evidence-based practices or patient preferences.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/78155/1/jwh.2008.1091.pd
Acupuncture Point Localization Varies Among Acupuncturists
Background: Studies assessing the point-specific effect of acupuncture or the characteristics of acupuncture points (APs) tend to yield inconclusive results. In order to identify a possible confounding factor, we aimed to examine the variability in AP localization by means of a survey. Material and Methods: Attendees of the 14th ICMART (International Council of Medical Acupuncture and Related Techniques) congress as well as DAGfA (German Medical Society of Acupuncture) lecturers and students were asked to locate and mark the APs LI 10 and TH 5 on a research assistant's arm. Identified points were transferred into a coordinate system, and the respective bivariate distribution function was calculated. Additionally, participants filled out a questionnaire about their acupuncture education and experience, the acupuncture style and point localization techniques used most frequently, and their estimation of the size of an AP. Results: The areas of the ellipses, theoretically containing 95% of AP localizations, varied between 44.49 and 5.18 cm(2). The largest distance between 2 identified points was 8.45 cm for LI 10 and 5.3 cm for TH 5. Apart from being trained at the same school, no other factor could be identified that determined the variability in AP localization. Conclusion: Our results indicate that congruity of AP localization among experienced acupuncturists might be low. Although there are some limitations to our results, this possible bias should be taken into account when conducting acupuncture trials and interpreting results of previous acupuncture studies
Social, environmental and psychological factors associated with objective physical activity levels in the over 65s
Objective: To assess physical activity levels objectively using accelerometers in community dwelling over 65 s and to examine associations with health, social, environmental and psychological factors. Design: Cross sectional survey. Setting: 17 general practices in Scotland, United Kingdom. Participants: Random sampling of over 65 s registered with the practices in four strata young-old (65â80 years), old-old (over 80 years), more affluent and less affluent groups. Main Outcome Measures: Accelerometry counts of activity per day. Associations between activity and Theory of Planned Behaviour variables, the physical environment, health, wellbeing and demographic variables were examined with multiple regression analysis and multilevel modelling. Results: 547 older people (mean (SD) age 79(8) years, 54% female) were analysed representing 94% of those surveyed. Accelerometry counts were highest in the affluent younger group, followed by the deprived younger group, with lowest levels in the deprived over 80 s group. Multiple regression analysis showed that lower age, higher perceived behavioural control, the physical function subscale of SF-36, and having someone nearby to turn to were all independently associated with higher physical activity levels (R2 = 0.32). In addition, hours of sunshine were independently significantly associated with greater physical activity in a multilevel model. Conclusions: Other than age and hours of sunlight, the variables identified are modifiable, and provide a strong basis for the future development of novel multidimensional interventions aimed at increasing activity participation in later life.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Effect of Chronic Stimulation and Stimulus Level on Temporal Processing by Cochlear Implant Listeners
A series of experiments investigated potential changes in temporal processing during the months following activation of a cochlear implant (CI) and as a function of stimulus level. Experiment 1 tested patients on the day of implant activation and 2 and 6Â months later. All stimuli were presented using direct stimulation of a single apical electrode. The dependent variables were rate discrimination ratios (RDRs) for pulse trains with rates centred on 120 pulses per second (pps), obtained using an adaptive procedure, and a measure of the upper limit of temporal pitch, obtained using a pitch-ranking procedure. All stimuli were presented at their most comfortable level (MCL). RDRs decreased from 1.23 to 1.16 and the upper limit increased from 357 to 485Â pps from 0 to 2Â months post-activation, with no overall change from 2 to 6Â months. Because MCLs and hence the testing level increased across sessions, two further experiments investigated whether the performance changes observed across sessions could be due to level differences. Experiment 2 re-tested a subset of subjects at 9Â months post-activation, using current levels similar to those used at 0Â months. Although the stimuli sounded softer, some subjects showed lower RDRs and/or higher upper limits at this re-test. Experiment 3 measured RDRs and the upper limit for a separate group of subjects at levels equal to 60Â %, 80Â % and 100Â % of the dynamic range. RDRs decreased with increasing level. The upper limit increased with increasing level for most subjects, with two notable exceptions. Implications of the results for temporal plasticity are discussed, along with possible influences of the effects of level and of across-session learning
Super-resolution far-field ghost imaging via compressive sampling
Much more image details can be resolved by improving the system's imaging
resolution and enhancing the resolution beyond the system's Rayleigh
diffraction limit is generally called super-resolution. By combining the sparse
prior property of images with the ghost imaging method, we demonstrated
experimentally that super-resolution imaging can be nonlocally achieved in the
far field even without looking at the object. Physical explanation of
super-resolution ghost imaging via compressive sampling and its potential

Globular Cluster Distance Determinations
The present status of the distance scale to Galactic globular clusters is
reviewed. Six distance determination techniques which are deemed to be most
reliable are discussed in depth. These different techniques are used to
calibrate the absolute magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars. The various
calibrations fall into three groups. Main sequence fitting using Hipparcos
parallaxes, theoretical HB models and the RR Lyrae in the LMC all favor a
bright calibration, implying a `long' globular cluster distance scale. White
dwarf fitting and the astrometric distances yield a somewhat fainter RR Lyrae
calibration, while the statistical parallax solution yields faint RR Lyrae
stars implying a `short' distance scale to globular clusters. Various secondary
distance indicators discussed all favor the long distance scale. The `long' and
`short' distance scales differ by (0.31+/-0.16) mag. Averaging together all of
the different distance determinations yields Mv(RR) = (0.23+/-0.04)([Fe/H] +

Denitrification and nitrous oxide emissions from riparian forests soils exposed to prolonged nitrogen runoff
Compared to upland forests, riparian forest soils have greater potential to remove nitrate (NO3) from agricultural run-off through denitrification. It is unclear, however, whether prolonged exposure of riparian soils to nitrogen (N) loading will affect the rate of denitrification and its end products. This research assesses the rate of denitrification and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from riparian forest soils exposed to prolonged nutrient run-off from plant nurseries and compares these to similar forest soils not exposed to nutrient run-off. Nursery run-off also contains high levels of phosphate (PO4). Since there are conflicting reports on the impact of PO4 on the activity of denitrifying microbes, the impact of PO4 on such activity was also investigated. Bulk and intact soil cores were collected from N-exposed and non-exposed forests to determine denitrification and N2O emission rates, whereas denitrification potential was determined using soil slurries. Compared to the non-amended treatment, denitrification rate increased 2.7- and 3.4-fold when soil cores collected from both N-exposed and non-exposed sites were amended with 30 and 60 ÎŒg NO3-N g-1 soil, respectively. Net N2O emissions were 1.5 and 1.7 times higher from the N-exposed sites compared to the non-exposed sites at 30 and 60 ÎŒg NO3-N g-1 soil amendment rates, respectively. Similarly, denitrification potential increased 17 times in response to addition of 15 ÎŒg NO3-N g-1 in soil slurries. The addition of PO4 (5 ÎŒg PO4âP g-1) to soil slurries and intact cores did not affect denitrification rates. These observations suggest that prolonged N loading did not affect the denitrification potential of the riparian forest soils; however, it did result in higher N2O emissions compared to emission rates from non-exposed forests

24-Week ÎČ-alanine ingestion does not affect muscle taurine or clinical blood parameters in healthy males
Purpose: To investigate the effects of chronic beta-alanine (BA) supplementation on muscle taurine content, blood clinical markers and sensory side-effects.
Methods: Twenty-five healthy male participants (age 27±4 years, height 1.75±0.09 m, body mass 78.9±11.7 kg) were supplemented with 6.4 g dayâ1 of sustained-release BA (N=16; CarnoSynâą, NAI, USA) or placebo (PL; N=9; maltodextrin) for 24 weeks. Resting muscle biopsies of the m. vastus lateralis were taken at 0, 12 and 24 weeks and analysed for taurine content (BA, N=12; PL, N=6) using high-performance liquid chromatography. Resting venous blood samples were taken every 4 weeks and analysed for markers of renal, hepatic and muscle function (BA, N=15; PL, N=8; aspartate transaminase; alanine aminotransferase; alkaline phosphatase; lactate dehydrogenase; albumin; globulin; creatinine; estimated glomerular filtration rate and creatine kinase).
Results :There was a significant main effect of group (p=0.04) on muscle taurine, with overall lower values in PL, although there was no main effect of time or interaction effect (both p>0.05) and no differences between specific timepoints (week 0, BA: 33.67±8.18 mmol kgâ1 dm, PL: 27.75±4.86 mmol kgâ1 dm; week 12, BA: 35.93±8.79 mmol kgâ1 dm, PL: 27.67±4.75 mmol kgâ1 dm; week 24, BA: 35.42±6.16 mmol kgâ1 dm, PL: 31.99±5.60 mmol kgâ1 dm). There was no effect of treatment, time or any interaction effects on any blood marker (all p>0.05) and no self-reported side-effects in these participants throughout the study.
Conclusions: The current study showed that 24 weeks of BA supplementation at 6.4 g dayâ1 did not significantly affect muscle taurine content, clinical markers of renal, hepatic and muscle function, nor did it result in chronic sensory side-effects, in healthy individuals. Since athletes are likely to engage in chronic supplementation, these data provide important evidence to suggest that supplementation with BA at these doses for up to 24 weeks is safe for healthy individuals
