    Development of a laser scanning thickness measurement inspection system

    The quality specifications for products and the materials used in them are becoming ever more demanding. The solution to the many visual inspection quality assurance (QA) problems is the use of automatic in-line surface inspection systems. These need to achieve uniform product quality at high throughput speeds. As a result, there is a need for systems that allow 100% in-line testing of materials and surfaces. To reach this goal laser technology integrated with computer control technology provides a useful solution. In this work, a high speed, low cost, and high accuracy non-contact laser scanning inspection system is developed. The system is capable of measuring the thickness of solid, non-transparent objects using the principle of laser-optical triangulation. Measurement accuracies and repeatabilities to the micrometer level are achieved with the developed system

    Is the Balassa-Samuelson Hypothesis still relevant? Cross-country evidence from 1950 -2017

    Abstract. We revisit the Balassa and Samuelson hypothesis based on the relationship between real exchange rate and total factor productivity relative to the United States and investigate with panel data set of 182 countries from 1950 to 2017. Results, suggest that there is an inverse relationship between the two, an increase in productivity results in an increase in real exchange rate and the findings supports the hypothesis. We use a range of tests including Arellano-Bond Dynamic Panel Data (both fixed and random effect) estimator and findings validates the hypothesis. All these additional tests confirm that the relationship between real exchange rate and relative factor producity are related in the long-run also.Keywords.     Relationship between Economic Growth and Debt: An Empirical Analysis for Sub-Saharan Africa

    In this study, we examine the connection between economic growth and debt, with the question in mind -“Is debt a burden and bad for economic growth? Employing several sophisticated statistical approaches to investigate the problem and to assess the impact of debt on economic growth in 48 countries of Sub-Saharan Africa from 1995 to 2012, we find evidence of Granger causality between debt and economic growth in 8 out of the 48 sub-Saharan countries during the period of study and validate for the existence of “Debt Laffer Curve.” We also study the relationship between debt and economic growth rate in Granger causality and Dynamic Arellano-Bond panel data estimation frameworks, and find evidence of a negative correlation between the two variables (Debt and GDP) and confirm the findings by testing several versions of the models. Political decision and economic policy are intertwined and need to be examined carefully when implemented for economic growth and our findings lend credence to the politically unpopular austerity measures (constraints on government spending financed by borrowing). There is a limit to the economic growth rate that the government financed expenditure can bring. If the burden of debt is too high then there is a negative impact of debt on the economic growth.Keywords. Economic Growth, Debt, Laffer curve and Investments.JEL. E20, E60, E24

    Control of euglenophyte bloom and fish production enhancement using duckweed and lime

    Euglenophyte bloom is a common problem in most of the aquaculture ponds in Bangladesh. In the present study we conducted an experiment to control euglenophyte bloom for achieving better fish production using duckweed (Lemna minor) and lime. The experiment was carried out using four treatments, i.e., ponds were supplied with duckweed (T1), lime treatment (T2), both duckweed and lime (T3) and without supply of duckweed and lime (T4). Rohu, catla, mrigal, silver carp and silver barb were stocked and their gut contents were analyzed monthly. The ranges of water quality parameters were analyzed within the productive limit during the experimental period. The mean abundance of euglenophyte was significantly highest in T4 (17.62 ± 1.97 x 10^4 cells/L), followed by T2 (2.96 ± 0.20 x 10^4 cells/L), T1 (1.94 ± 0.35 x 10^4 cells/L) and T3 (1.53 ± 0.42 x 10^4 cells/L). Gut content analysis revealed that considerable amounts of euglenophyte were consumed by silver carp and silver barb, but not preferred by rohu, catla and mrigal. The gross yields of fish were 2133.37, 1967.76, 2816.52 and 1725.62 kg/ha/5 months in T1, T2, T3 and T4 respectively. The highest fish production in T3 and lowest fish production in T4 indicated the use of duckweed and lime is economically sustainable for controlling euglenophytes bloom, maintaining water quality and getting higher fish production

    ‘My new routine’: Assessing the impact of citizen science on climate adaptation in Bangladesh

    Under embargo until: 2021-01-22Citizen science is put forward as a method for extending science to include communities in learning about, and adapting to, climate variability and change in the places they live. But it is difficult to find evidence of how citizen science influences climate adaptation governance. The citizen science field lacks the assessment frameworks and empirical studies for understanding impacts on citizen scientists’ common adaptive capacities for supporting social processes of adaptation. In addressing this gap, this paper describes a citizen science initiative carried out with communities in northeast Bangladesh, and assesses how it contributed to local governance capacity for climate adaptation. In doing so, it develops and tests a novel framework that assesses citizen science’s contributions a high-quality knowledge base, and to five different capital stocks. The assessment saw high increases in citizen scientists’ human capital relative to their awareness and understanding of local rainfall; learning that they applied in adaptive practices at work and at home, and local leadership. There were also high increases in social capital among citizen scientists, but more moderate increases in technological and resource capital, and in political capital. There was some evidence of the citizen science being used to support public adaptation decision-making. The initiative had the least impact on institutional capital.acceptedVersio

    Strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities: Results from a quasi‑experimental impact evaluation in coastal Bangladesh

    At present, no clear consensus exists on how to assess resilience interventions in the field. In this paper we propose to measure the impact of the ECOFISH project, the objective of which was to strengthen the resilience of local fishing communities affected by recurrent crises in Bangladesh. The evaluation was based on a difference-in-difference (DiD) framework. The DiD analysis indicates that households who benefited from ECOFISH have a higher propensity to adopt positive responses than non-beneficiaries when hit by a shock. Those beneficiaries also report a statistically higher recovery rate (resilience). The analysis indicates however that the project did not manage to reduce the propensity of households to engage in detrimental coping strategies and that the long-term food and nutritional security of the beneficiaries has not yet visibly improved compared to the control group. Those different results are discussed in the light of the wider literature on resilience evaluation

    Short channel  effects on the gate capacitance of nanowire trigate MOS field-effect transistors are studied considering wave function penetration. Capacitance-Voltage (C‑V) measurements are commonly used in studying gate-oxide quality in detail.  C‑V test results offer a wealth of device and process information, including bulk and interface charges. Capacitance indicates switching speed of the MOSFET. It is our goal to minimize capacitance as possible as we can in MOSFET. Due to our necessary to compact the Integrated Circuit as possible as we can for getting small electronics devices. Capacitance determines the speed of the IC. Every engineer in this section should know capacitance of his implementing device MOSFET to get exact result from this device. Whenever we deal with 10X10 nm scale or less device of MOSFET. We must concern the effect of wave function penetration into device in this stage classical mechanics fails to describe exact result of the system because electron can move in only one direction (x), in 3 Dimension, it cannot move in other two direction (y, z). i.e. confined in two direction which is not predictable by classical mechanics here quantum mechanics (QM) gives better solution of this problem. Therefore we consider QM in our study. Here we presented how wave function play vital role considering small area of trigate MOSFET. It is the analytical approach of QM and highly recommendation to use QM rather than CM to get accuracy.     Charge-Pairing Interactions Control The Conformational Setpoint and Motions of The FMN Domain in Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase

    The NOS (nitric oxide synthase; EC 1.14.13.39) enzymes contain a C-terminal flavoprotein domain [NOSred (reductase domain of NOS)] that binds FAD and FMN, and an N-terminal oxygenase domain that binds haem. Evidence suggests that the FMN-binding domain undergoes large conformational motions to shuttle electrons between the NADPH/FAD-binding domain [FNR (ferredoxin NADP-reductase)] and the oxygenase domain. Previously we have shown that three residues on the FMN domain (Glu(762), Glu(816) and Glu(819)) that make charge-pairing interactions with the FNR help to slow electron flux through nNOSred (neuronal NOSred). In the present study, we show that charge neutralization or reversal at each of these residues alters the setpoint [K-eq(A)], of the NOSred conformational equilibrium to favour the open (FMN-deshielded) conformational state. Moreover, computer simulations of the kinetic traces of cytochrome c reduction by the mutants suggest that they have higher conformational transition rates (1.5-4-fold) and rates of interflavin electron transfer (1.5-2-fold) relative to wild-type nNOSred. We conclude that the three charge-pairing residues on the FMN domain govern electron flux through nNOSred by stabilizing its closed (FMN-shielded) conformational state and by retarding the rate of conformational switching between its open and closed conformations
