poster abstractObjectives: The objective of this retrospective radiographic study was to compare mucosal thickening of maxillary sinuses of patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) vs. non-CLP. Methods: Following IRB approval, three-dimensional cone beam computerized tomographs (CBCT; i-CAT) of children with unilateral CLP and children without CLP (age and gender matched; 8-14yoa; n=15ea) were selected randomly from pre-existing orthodontic records. Following reliability studies, one investigator segmented both sinuses from each CBCT using Dolphin-3D Imaging software. The sinuses were separated coronally into .4mm slices anterioposteriorly. Bony sinuses and airspaces were outlined manually on each slice. Software calculated total sinus and airspace area. Areas were summed and multiplied by slice thickness to determine volume. Mucosal thickening was the difference between total sinus and airspace volumes. Percent mucosal thickening was calculated. Since no significant differences existed between cleft (left) and noncleft (right) sides of either patient group (p>.05), sinuses for each group were pooled (n=30 ea). Significant differences in total sinus, airspace, mucosal thickening volumes and % mucosal thickening were determined using paired t-tests, accepting p<0.05 as significant. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) scatterplots were used to determine patterns of multivariate variation based on group, age, and sex. MANOVA was used to confirm PCA findings. Reliability was determined using Intraclass Correlations (ICC). Results: Reliability was excellent (ICC>0.99). The CLP total sinus and airspace volume were significantly smaller and mucosal thickening and % mucosal thickening were significantly greater than non-CLP sinuses (all p<.024). PCA showed that 89.6% of sample variance was explained by PC axis 1 and 2 (group and age). Age group 8-9yrs showed more separation with 13-14yrs than with 10-12yrs. MANOVA confirmed a significant effect of sample (p=.001) and age (p=.007)

Evaluation of multiplex tandem PCR (MT-PCR) assays for the detection of bacterial resistance genes among Enterobacteriaceae in clinical urines

Background: Increasing resistance drives empirical use of less potent and previously reserved antibiotics, including for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Molecular profiling, without culture, might better guide early therapy.  Objectives: To explore the potential of AusDiagnostics multiplex tandem (MT) PCR UTI assays.  Methods: Two MT-PCR assays were developed successively, seeking 8 or 16 resistance genes. Amplification was tracked in real time, with melting temperatures used to confirm product identity. Assays were variously performed on: (i) extracted DNA; (ii) cultured bacteria; (iii) urine spiked with reference strains; and (iv) bacteria harvested from clinical urines. Results were compared with those from sequencing, real-time SybrGreen PCR or phenotypic susceptibility.  Results: Performance was similar irrespective of whether DNA, cultures or urines were used, with >90% sensitivity and specificity with respect to common β-lactamases, dfr genes and aminoglycoside resistance determinants except aadA1/A2/A3, for which carriage correlated poorly with streptomycin resistance. Fluoroquinolone-susceptible and -resistant Escherichia coli (but not other species) were distinguished by the melting temperatures of their gyrA PCR products. The time from urine to results was <3 h.  Conclusions: The MT-PCR assays rapidly identified resistance genes from Gram-negative bacteria in urines as well as from cultivated bacteria. Used directly on urines, this assay has the potential to guide early therapy

Exponential decay for the damped wave equation in unbounded domains

We study the decay of the semigroup generated by the damped wave equation in an unbounded domain. We first prove under the natural geometric control condition the exponential decay of the semigroup. Then we prove under a weaker condition the logarithmic decay of the solutions (assuming that the initial data are smoother). As corollaries, we obtain several extensions of previous results of stabilisation and control

4He experiments can serve as a database for determining the three-nucleon force

We report on microscopic calculations for the 4He compound system in the framework of the resonating group model employing realistic nucleon-nucleon and three nucleon forces. The resulting scattering phase shifts are compared to those of a comprehensive R-matrix analysis of all data in this system, which are available in numerical form. The agreement between calculation and analysis is in most cases very good. Adding three-nucleon forces yields in many cases large effects. For a few cases the new agreement is striking. We relate some differencies between calculation and analysis to specific data and discuss neccessary experiments to clarify the situation. From the results we conclude that the data of the 4He system might be well suited to determine the structure of the three-nucleon force.Comment: title changed, note added, format of figures changed, appearance of figures in black-and-white changed, Phys. Collective modes in uniaxial incommensurate-commensurate systems with the real order parameter

The basic Landau model for uniaxial systems of the II class is nonintegrable, and allows for various stable and metastable periodic configurations, beside that representing the uniform (or dimerized) ordering. In the present paper we complete the analysis of this model by performing the second order variational procedure, and formulating the combined Floquet-Bloch approach to the ensuing nonstandard linear eigenvalue problem. This approach enables an analytic derivation of some general conclusions on the stability of particular states, and on the nature of accompanied collective excitations. Furthermore, we calculate numerically the spectra of collective modes for all states participating in the phase diagram, and analyze critical properties of Goldstone modes at all second order and first order transitions between disordered, uniform and periodic states. In particular it is shown that the Goldstone mode softens as the underlying soliton lattice becomes more and more dilute.Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, REVTeX, to be published in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Genera

On the Mechanism of Time--Delayed Feedback Control

The Pyragas method for controlling chaos is investigated in detail from the experimental as well as theoretical point of view. We show by an analytical stability analysis that the revolution around an unstable periodic orbit governs the success of the control scheme. Our predictions concerning the transient behaviour of the control signal are confirmed by numerical simulations and an electronic circuit experiment.Comment: 4 pages, REVTeX, 4 eps-figures included Phys. Factorization and Lie point symmetries of general Lienard-type equation in the complex plane

We present a variational approach to a general Lienard-type equation in order to linearize it and, as an example, the Van der Pol oscillator is discussed. The new equation which is almost linear is factorized. The point symmetries of the deformed equation are also discussed and the two-dimensional Lie algebraic generators are obtained
