Hadronic B Decays Involving Even Parity Charmed Mesons
Hadronic B decays containing an parity-even charmed meson in the final state
are studied. Specifically we focus on the Cabibbo-allowed decays and , where denotes generically a p-wave charmed meson.
The transition form factors are studied in the improved version
of the Isgur-Scora-Grinstein-Wise quark model. We apply heavy quark effective
theory and chiral symmetry to study the strong decays of p-wave charmed mesons
and determine the magnitude of the mixing angle. Except
the decay to the predictions for agree
with experiment. The sign of mixing angle is found to be
positive in order to avoid a severe suppression on the production of
. The interference between color-allowed and color-suppressed
tree amplitudes is expected to be destructive in the decay . Hence, an observation of the ratio
can be used to test the relative signs of
various form factors as implied by heavy quark symmetry. Although the predicted
at the level of exceeds the
present upper limit, it leads to the ratio
as expected from the factorization
approach and from the ratio . Therefore, it is
crucial to have a measurement of this mode to test the factorization
hypothesis. For decays, it is expected that \bar
D_{s0}^*D\gsim \bar D_{s1}D as the decay constants of the multiplet

First mineralogical maps of 4 Vesta
Before Dawn arrived at 4 Vesta only very low spatial resolution (~50 km) albedo and color maps were available from HST data. Also ground-based color and spectroscopic data were utilized as a first attempt to map Vesta’s mineralogical diversity [1-4]. The VIR spectrometer [5] onboard Dawn has ac-quired hyperspectral data while the FC camera [6] ob-tained multi-color data of the Vestan surface at very high spatial resolutions, allowing us to map complex geologic, morphologic units and features. We here re-port about the results obtained from a preliminary global mineralogical map of Vesta, based on data from the Survey orbit. This map is part of an iterative map-ping effort; the map is refined with each improvement in resolution
A Phenomenological Analysis of Heavy Hadron Lifetimes
A phenomenological analysis of lifetimes of bottom and charmed hadrons within
the framework of the heavy quark expansion is performed. The baryon matrix
element is evaluated using the bag model and the nonrelativistic quark model.
We find that bottom-baryon lifetimes follow the pattern
.
However, neither the lifetime ratio nor the
absolute decay rates of the baryon and mesons can be explained.
One way of solving both difficulties is to allow the presence of linear
corrections by scaling the inclusive nonleptonic width with the fifth power of
the hadron mass rather than the heavy quark mass . The hierarchy
of bottom baryon lifetimes is dramatically modified to
: The
longest-lived among bottom baryons in the OPE prescription now
becomes shortest-lived. The replacement of by in nonleptonic
widths is natural and justified in the PQCD-based factorization approach
formulated in terms of hadron-level kinematics. For inclusive charmed baryon
decays, we argue that since the heavy quark expansion does not converge, local
duality cannot be tested in this case. We show that while the ansatz of
substituting the heavy quark mass by the hadron mass provides a much better
description of the charmed-baryon lifetime {\it ratios}, it appears unnatural
and unpredictive for describing the {\it absolute} inclusive decay rates of

Rapidity distribution as a probe for elliptical flow at intermediate energies
Interplay between the spectator and participant matter in heavy-ion
collisions is investigated within isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics
(IQMD) model in term of rapidity distribution of light charged particles. The
effect of different types and size rapidity distributions is studied in
elliptical flow. The elliptical flow patterns show important role of the nearby
spectator matter on the participant zone. This role is further explained on the
basis of passing time of the spectator and expansion time of the participant
zone. The transition from the in-plane to out-of-plane is observed only when
the mid-rapidity region is included in the rapidity bin, otherwise no
transition occurs. The transition energy is found to be highly sensitive
towards the size of the rapidity bin, while weakly on the type of the rapidity
distribution. The theoretical results are also compared with the experimental
findings and are found in good agreement.Comment: 8 figure
Mapping Vesta: First Results from Dawn’s Survey Orbit
The geologic objectives of the Dawn Mission [1] are
to derive Vesta’s shape, map the surface geology,
understand the geological context and contribute to
the determination of the asteroids’ origin and
evolution.Geomorphology and distribution of surface features
will provide evidence for impact cratering, tectonic activity, volcanism, and regolith processes. Spectral
measurements of the surface will provide evidence of
the compositional characteristics of geological units.
Age information, as derived from crater sizefrequency
distributions, provides the stratigraphic
context for the structural and compositional mapping
results, thus revealing the geologic history of Vesta.
We present here the first results of the Dawn mission
from data collected during the approach to Vesta, and
its first discrete orbit phase – the Survey Orbit, which
lasts 21 days after the spacecraft had established a
circular polar orbit at a radius of ~3000 km with a
beta angle of 10°-15°
Testing data types implementations from algebraic specifications
Algebraic specifications of data types provide a natural basis for testing
data types implementations. In this framework, the conformance relation is
based on the satisfaction of axioms. This makes it possible to formally state
the fundamental concepts of testing: exhaustive test set, testability
hypotheses, oracle. Various criteria for selecting finite test sets have been
proposed. They depend on the form of the axioms, and on the possibilities of
observation of the implementation under test. This last point is related to the
well-known oracle problem. As the main interest of algebraic specifications is
data type abstraction, testing a concrete implementation raises the issue of
the gap between the abstract description and the concrete representation. The
observational semantics of algebraic specifications bring solutions on the
basis of the so-called observable contexts. After a description of testing
methods based on algebraic specifications, the chapter gives a brief
presentation of some tools and case studies, and presents some applications to
other formal methods involving datatypes
Prox-regularity of rank constraint sets and implications for algorithms
We present an analysis of sets of matrices with rank less than or equal to a
specified number . We provide a simple formula for the normal cone to such
sets, and use this to show that these sets are prox-regular at all points with
rank exactly equal to . The normal cone formula appears to be new. This
allows for easy application of prior results guaranteeing local linear
convergence of the fundamental alternating projection algorithm between sets,
one of which is a rank constraint set. We apply this to show local linear
convergence of another fundamental algorithm, approximate steepest descent. Our
results apply not only to linear systems with rank constraints, as has been
treated extensively in the literature, but also nonconvex systems with rank

The energy spectrum of all-particle cosmic rays around the knee region observed with the Tibet-III air-shower array
We have already reported the first result on the all-particle spectrum around
the knee region based on data from 2000 November to 2001 October observed by
the Tibet-III air-shower array. In this paper, we present an updated result
using data set collected in the period from 2000 November through 2004 October
in a wide range over 3 decades between eV and eV, in which
the position of the knee is clearly seen at around 4 PeV. The spectral index is
-2.68 0.02(stat.) below 1PeV, while it is -3.12 0.01(stat.) above 4
PeV in the case of QGSJET+HD model, and various systematic errors are under

Moon Shadow by Cosmic Rays under the Influence of Geomagnetic Field and Search for Antiprotons at Multi-TeV Energies
We have observed the shadowing of galactic cosmic ray flux in the direction
of the moon, the so-called moon shadow, using the Tibet-III air shower array
operating at Yangbajing (4300 m a.s.l.) in Tibet since 1999. Almost all cosmic
rays are positively charged; for that reason, they are bent by the geomagnetic
field, thereby shifting the moon shadow westward. The cosmic rays will also
produce an additional shadow in the eastward direction of the moon if cosmic
rays contain negatively charged particles, such as antiprotons, with some
fraction. We selected 1.5 x10^{10} air shower events with energy beyond about 3
TeV from the dataset observed by the Tibet-III air shower array and detected
the moon shadow at level. The center of the moon was detected
in the direction away from the apparent center of the moon by 0.23 to
the west. Based on these data and a full Monte Carlo simulation, we searched
for the existence of the shadow produced by antiprotons at the multi-TeV energy
region. No evidence of the existence of antiprotons was found in this energy
region. We obtained the 90% confidence level upper limit of the flux ratio of
antiprotons to protons as 7% at multi-TeV energies.Comment: 13pages,4figures; Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic
Pneumoconiosis from Agricultural Dust Exposure among Young California Farmworkers
BackgroundAgricultural workers are exposed to airborne pollutants, including organic and inorganic (mineral) dusts.ObjectivesLung autopsy specimens from consecutive coroner's cases of Hispanic males in Fresno County, California, (n = 112) were obtained to determine whether mineral dust exposure in agricultural work leads to pneumoconiosis.MethodsThe left lung was fixed by inflation. We evaluated airway and parenchymal pathology using standardized diagnostic criteria and semiquantitative grading schemata, including the grading of small airways for fibrosis and birefringent mineral dust particles. We analyzed lung dust burden on a subset of 37 lungs following bleach digestion, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray spectrometry (XRS) and image analysis, and by X-ray diffraction for crystalline silica (CSi). Farmworkers comprised 51.5% and nonfarmworkers 48.5% of the samples.ResultsProximal airways demonstrated little mineral dust accumulation, but membranous and respiratory bronchioles had wall thickening, remodeling, and inflammation associated with carbonaceous and mineral dust deposition. These changes were independently associated with agricultural work, cigarette smoking, and increased age. Mineral dust small airways disease, pneumoconiosis (macules and nodules), and pathologic changes consistent with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and interstitial fibrosis predominated in farmworkers compared with nonfarmworkers. CSi, determined gravimetrically, and aluminum silicate particles, determined by SEM/XRS, were increased in the lungs of farmworkers compared with nonfarmworkers and were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with small airway disease and pneumoconiosis.ConclusionMineral dust exposure is associated with increased small airway disease and pneumoconiosis among California farmworkers; however, the clinical significance and natural history of these changes remains to be determined
