Precision Spectroscopy at Heavy Ion Ring Accelerator SIS300

Unique spectroscopic possibilities open up if a laser beam interacts with relativistic lithium-like ions stored in the heavy ion ring accelerator SIS300 at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research FAIR in Darmstadt, Germany. At a relativistic factor gamma = 36 the 2P 1/2 level can be excited from the 2S 1/2 ground state for any element with frequency doubled dye-lasers in collinear geometry. Precise transition energy measurements can be performed if the fluorescence photons, boosted in forward direction into the X-ray region, are energetically analyzed with a single crystal monochromator. The hyperfine structure can be investigated at the 2P 1/2 - 2S 1/2 transition for all elements and at the 2P 3/2 - 2S 1/2 transition for elements with Z < 50. Isotope shifts and nuclear moments can be measured with unprecedented precision, in principle even for only a few stored radioactive species with known nuclear spin. A superior relative line width in the order of 5E-7 may be feasible after laser cooling, and even polarized external beams may be prepared by optical pumping

The Effect of Ion Implanting on Hydrogen Entry into Metals

The effectiveness of platinum ion implanting in mitigating hydrogen entry into 4340 steel is measured and quantified. Data are presented to compare the extent of hydrogen absorption by the substrate during electrolytic hydrogen charging of platinum ion-implanted and unimplanted 4340 steel substrates. Several implanting conditions were used in processing the samples, and the surface-limited mass-transfer coefficient was calculated for each case and used to quantify the effectiveness of each treatment in reducing hydrogen absorption. It is shown that the underlying mechanism for reducing hydrogen absorption by platinum ion-implanted substrates is the catalytic effect of platinum that favors hydrogen evolution at the steel\u27s surface over hydrogen absorption by the metal. Although scattering experiments with low energy helium ions suggest that the platinum content in the first monolayer of platinum-implanted steels is small, the ability of Pt to catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction is still strong enough to significantly reduce the quantity of hydrogen that enters the metal

Equivalence of the Calogero-Sutherland Model to Free Harmonic Oscillators

A similarity transformation is constructed through which a system of particles interacting with inverse-square two-body and harmonic potentials in one dimension, can be mapped identically, to a set of free harmonic oscillators. This equivalence provides a straightforward method to find the complete set of eigenfunctions, the exact constants of motion and a linear W1+∞W_{1+\infty} algebra associated with this model. It is also demonstrated that a large class of models with long-range interactions, both in one and higher dimensions can be made equivalent to decoupled oscillators.Comment: 9 pages, REVTeX, Completely revised, few new equations and references are adde

Present and Future Bounds on Non-Standard Neutrino Interactions

    Get PDF
We consider Non-Standard neutrino Interactions (NSI), described by four-fermion operators of the form (νˉαγνβ)(fˉγf)(\bar{\nu}_{\alpha} \gamma {\nu}_{\beta}) (\bar{f} \gamma f), where ff is an electron or first generation quark. We assume these operators are generated at dimension ≥8\geq 8, so the related vertices involving charged leptons, obtained by an SU(2) transformation νδ→eδ\nu_{\delta} \to e_{\delta}, do not appear at tree level. These related vertices necessarily arise at one loop, via WW exchange. We catalogue current constraints from sin⁡2θW\sin^2 \theta_W measurements in neutrino scattering, from atmospheric neutrino observations, from LEP, and from bounds on the related charged lepton operators. We estimate future bounds from comparing KamLAND and solar neutrino data, and from measuring sin⁡2θW\sin^2 \theta_W at the near detector of a neutrino factory. Operators constructed with νμ\nu_\mu and νe\nu_e should not confuse the determination of oscillation parameters at a ν\nufactory, because the processes we consider are more sensitive than oscillations at the far detector. For operators involving ντ\nu_\tau, we estimate similar sensitivities at the near and far detector.Comment: Erratum added at the end of the documen

Expression of human apolipoprotein B100 in transgenic mice. Editing of human apolipoprotein B100 mRNA

    Get PDF
Apolipoprotein B (apoB) is a large glycoprotein that circulates in plasma as a major constituent of numerous lipoproteins. ApoB exists in two forms: apoB48 and apoB100. ApoB48 is identical in sequence to the N-terminal region of apoB100 and is generated by sequence-specific mRNA editing of the apoB100 transcript. Here, we describe the development of a line of mice expressing a human apoB transgene driven by promoter/enhancer sequences from the transthyretin gene. In these mice, immunodetectable human apoB100 is synthesized by the liver, kidney, and brain. Human apoB100 is found in low concentration (approximately 0.1 mg/dl) in the plasma of the transgenic mice and circulates in the low density lipoprotein fraction. The hepatic human apoB100 transcripts undergo mRNA editing at only slightly lower efficiency than the endogenous mouse apoB100 message. Therefore, there is no absolute species specificity to the apoB100 mRNA editing process

Ownership and control in a competitive industry

We study a differentiated product market in which an investor initially owns a controlling stake in one of two competing firms and may acquire a non-controlling or a controlling stake in a competitor, either directly using her own assets, or indirectly via the controlled firm. While industry profits are maximized within a symmetric two product monopoly, the investor attains this only in exceptional cases. Instead, she sometimes acquires a noncontrolling stake. Or she invests asymmetrically rather than pursuing a full takeover if she acquires a controlling one. Generally, she invests indirectly if she only wants to affect the product market outcome, and directly if acquiring shares is profitable per se. --differentiated products, separation of ownership and control, private benefits of control

Relativistic wave equations for interacting massive particles with arbitrary half-intreger spins

New formulation of relativistic wave equations (RWE) for massive particles with arbitrary half-integer spins s interacting with external electromagnetic fields are proposed. They are based on wave functions which are irreducible tensors of rank n(n (n=s-\frac12$) antisymmetric w.r.t. n pairs of indices, whose components are bispinors. The form of RWE is straightforward and free of inconsistencies associated with the other approaches to equations describing interacting higher spin particles
