The correlation potential in density functional theory at the GW-level: spherical atoms
As part of a project to obtain better optical response functions for nano
materials and other systems with strong excitonic effects we here calculate the
exchange-correlation (XC) potential of density-functional theory (DFT) at a
level of approximation which corresponds to the dynamically- screened-exchange
or GW approximation. In this process we have designed a new numerical method
based on cubic splines which appears to be superior to other techniques
previously applied to the "inverse engineering problem" of DFT, i.e., the
problem of finding an XC potential from a known particle density. The
potentials we obtain do not suffer from unphysical ripple and have, to within a
reasonable accuracy, the correct asymptotic tails outside localized systems.
The XC potential is an important ingredient in finding the particle-conserving
excitation energies in atoms and molecules and our potentials perform better in
this regard as compared to the LDA potential, potentials from GGA:s, and a DFT
potential based on MP2 theory.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure

Defect tolerance in as-deposited selenium-alloyed cadmium telluride solar cells
The efficiency of cadmium telluride (CdTe) solar cells is limited primarily by voltage, which is known to depend on the carrier concentration and carrier lifetimes within the absorber layer of the cell. Here, cathodoluminescence measurements are made on an as-deposited CdSeTe/CdTe solar cell that show that selenium alloyed CdTe material luminesces much more strongly than non-alloyed CdTe. This reduction in non-radiative recombination in the CdSeTe suggests that the selenium gives it a certain defect tolerance. This has implications for carrier lifetimes and voltages in cadmium telluride solar cells
LINER/H II "Transition" Nuclei and the Nature of NGC 4569
Motivated by the discovery of young, massive stars in the nuclei of some
LINER/H II ``transition'' nuclei such as NGC 4569, we have computed
photoionization models to determine whether some of these objects may be
powered solely by young star clusters rather than by accretion-powered active
nuclei. The models were calculated with the photoionization code CLOUDY, using
evolving starburst continua generated by the the STARBURST99 code of Leitherer
et al. (1999). We find that the models are able to reproduce the emission-line
spectra of transition nuclei, but only for instantaneous bursts of solar or
higher metallicity, and only for ages of ~3-5 Myr, the period when the
extreme-ultraviolet continuum is dominated by emission from Wolf-Rayet stars.
For clusters younger than 3 Myr or older than 6 Myr, and for models with a
constant star-formation rate, the softer ionizing continuum results in an
emission spectrum more typical of H II regions. This model predicts that
Wolf-Rayet emission features should appear in the spectra of transition nuclei.
While such features have not generally been detected to date, they could be
revealed in observations having higher spatial resolution. Demographic
arguments suggest that this starburst model may not apply to the majority of
transition nuclei, particularly those in early-type host galaxies, but it could
account for some members of the transition class in hosts of type Sa and later.
The starburst models during the Wolf-Rayet-dominated phase can also reproduce
the narrow-line spectra of some LINERs, but only under conditions of
above-solar metallicity and only if high-density gas is present (n_e >~ 10^5
cm^{-3}). This scenario could be applicable to some ``Type 2'' LINERs which do
not show any clear signs of nonstellar activity.Comment: To appear in PASP. 22 pages, includes 9 figures, uses AASTeX v5.
New Long-term Historical Data Recording and Failure Analysis System for the CERN Cryoplants
CERN uses several liquid helium cryoplants (total of 21) for cooling large variety of superconducting devices namely: accelerating cavities, magnets for accelerators and particle detectors. The cryoplants are remotely operated from several control rooms using industrial standard supervision systems, which allows the instant display of all plant data and the trends, over several days, for the most important signals. The monitoring of the cryoplant performance during transient conditions and normal operation over several months asks for a long-term recording of all plant parameters. An historical data recording system has been developed, which collects data from all cryoplants, stores them in a centralized database over a period of one year and allows an user-friendly graphical visualization. In particular, a novel tool was developed for debugging causes of plant failures by comparing selected reference data with the simultaneous evolution of all plant data. Elliptic curve configurations on Fano surfaces
The elliptic curves on a surface of general type constitute an obstruction
for the cotangent sheaf to be ample. In this paper, we give the classification
of the configurations of the elliptic curves on the Fano surface of a smooth
cubic threefold. That means that we give the number of such curves, their
intersections and a plane model. This classification is linked to the
classification of the automorphism groups of theses surfaces.Comment: 17 pages, accepted and shortened version, the rest will appear in
