Perturbative Quantum Field Theory at Positive Temperatures: An Axiomatic Approach
It is shown that the perturbative expansions of the correlation functions of
a relativistic quantum field theory at finite temperature are uniquely
determined by the equations of motion and standard axiomatic requirements,
including the KMS condition. An explicit expression as a sum over generalized
Feynman graphs is derived. The canonical formalism is not used, and the
derivation proceeds from the beginning in the thermodynamic limit. No doubling
of fields is invoked. An unsolved problem concerning existence of these

An Algebraic Jost-Schroer Theorem for Massive Theories
We consider a purely massive local relativistic quantum theory specified by a
family of von Neumann algebras indexed by the space-time regions. We assume
that, affiliated with the algebras associated to wedge regions, there are
operators which create only single particle states from the vacuum (so-called
polarization-free generators) and are well-behaved under the space-time
translations. Strengthening a result of Borchers, Buchholz and Schroer, we show
that then the theory is unitarily equivalent to that of a free field for the
corresponding particle type. We admit particles with any spin and localization
of the charge in space-like cones, thereby covering the case of
string-localized covariant quantum fields.Comment: 21 pages. The second (and crucial) hypothesis of the theorem has been

High prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis in a desert population: results from an exploratory study around the ounianga lakes in Chad
Background: Researching a water-borne disease in the middle of the Sahara desert might not seem the most relevant concern. However, nomadic Sahelian pastoralist's health concerns regarding their livestock and anecdotal reports about trematode infections of Fasciola spp and Schistosoma spp in desert-raised animals justified an exploratory study focusing on the lakes of Ounianga in Northern Chad. The aim was to test whether trematode parasites such as Schistosoma spp occur in human populations living around the Sahara desert lakes of Ounianga Kebir and Ounianga Saker in northern Chad. Methods: The study comprised of three components. First, a cross sectional survey based on a random sample drawn from the population to detect infections with S. haematobium and S. mansoni ; second, focus group discussions exploring disease priorities, access to health and health seeking behaviour; and third, searching water contact sites for intermediate host snails. Samples of trematode parasites and snails were confirmed on species level by molecular genetics methods. Results: Among 258 participants, the overall S. haematobium prevalence using urine filtration was 39.1% (95% CI 33.2% - 45.1%), with 51.5% of the infected suffering from heavy infection. The intermediate host snail of S. haematobium ( Bulinus truncatus ) occurred at water sites near both study villages, revealing the potential for local transmission. Although a positive S. mansoni POC-CCA test result was obtained from 15.2% (10.6%-19.7%) of the samples no intermediate host snails of S. mansoni were found, and the relevance of S. mansoni remains uncertain. Qualitative findings underline the importance of morbidity caused by urinary schistosomiasis, and the lack of access to diagnostics and treatment as a major health concern. Conclusion: This research revealed a high prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis in the population living around the lakes of Ounianga in the Sahara, a UNESCO world heritage site in Chad. Despite the high public health importance of the associated morbidity expressed by the population there is no access to diagnostics and treatment. Further research is needed to develop and test a context adapted intervention
Leprosy Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (LPEP) Programme : study protocol for evaluating the feasibility and impact on case detection rates of contact tracing and single dose rifampicin
Introduction: The reported number of new leprosy patients has barely changed in recent years. Thus, additional approaches or modifications to the current standard of passive case detection are needed to interrupt leprosy transmission. Large-scale clinical trials with single dose rifampicin (SDR) given as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to contacts of newly diagnosed patients with leprosy have shown a 50–60% reduction of the risk of developing leprosy over the following 2 years. To accelerate the uptake of this evidence and introduction of PEP into national leprosy programmes, data on the effectiveness, impact and feasibility of contact tracing and PEP for leprosy are required. The leprosy post-exposure prophylaxis (LPEP) programme was designed to obtain those data.
Methods and analysis: The LPEP programme evaluates feasibility, effectiveness and impact of PEP with SDR in pilot areas situated in several leprosy endemic countries: India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Complementary sites are located in Brazil and Cambodia. From 2015 to 2018, contact persons of patients with leprosy are traced, screened for symptoms and assessed for eligibility to receive SDR. The intervention is implemented by the national leprosy programmes, tailored to local conditions and capacities, and relying on available human and material resources. It is coordinated on the ground with the help of the in-country partners of the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP). A robust data collection and reporting system is established in the pilot areas with regular monitoring and quality control, contributing to the strengthening of the national surveillance systems to become more action-oriented.
Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval has been obtained from the relevant ethics committees in the countries. Results and lessons learnt from the LPEP programme will be published in peer-reviewed journals and should provide important evidence and guidance for national and global policymakers to strengthen current leprosy elimination strategies
Current-voltage characteristics of diluted Josephson-junction arrays: scaling behavior at current and percolation threshold
Dynamical simulations and scaling arguments are used to study the
current-voltage (IV) characteristics of a two-dimensional model of resistively
shunted Josephson-junction arrays in presence of percolative disorder, at zero
external field. Two different limits of the Josephson-coupling concentration
are considered, where is the percolation threshold. For
and zero temperature, the IV curves show power-law behavior above a disorder
dependent critical current. The power-law behavior and critical exponents are
consistent with a simple scaling analysis. At and finite temperature ,
the results show the scaling behavior of a T=0 superconducting transition. The
resistance is linear but vanishes for decreasing with an apparent
exponential behavior. Crossover to non-linearity appears at currents
proportional to , with a thermal-correlation length exponent
consistent with the corresponding value for the diluted XY model at

The Effective Fragment Molecular Orbital Method for Fragments Connected by Covalent Bonds
We extend the effective fragment molecular orbital method (EFMO) into
treating fragments connected by covalent bonds. The accuracy of EFMO is
compared to FMO and conventional ab initio electronic structure methods for
polypeptides including proteins. Errors in energy for RHF and MP2 are within 2
kcal/mol for neutral polypeptides and 6 kcal/mol for charged polypeptides
similar to FMO but obtained two to five times faster. For proteins, the errors
are also within a few kcal/mol of the FMO results. We developed both the RHF
and MP2 gradient for EFMO. Compared to ab initio, the EFMO optimized structures
had an RMSD of 0.40 and 0.44 {\AA} for RHF and MP2, respectively.Comment: Revised manuscrip
Patent Human Infections with the Whipworm, Trichuris trichiura, Are Not Associated with Alterations in the Faecal Microbiota
Background: The soil-transmitted helminth (STH), Trichuris trichiura colonises the human large intestine where it may
modify inflammatory responses, an effect possibly mediated through alterations in the intestinal microbiota. We
hypothesised that patent T. trichiura infections would be associated with altered faecal microbiota and that anthelmintic treatment would induce a microbiota resembling more closely that observed in uninfected individuals.
Materials and Methods: School children in Ecuador were screened for STH infections and allocated to 3 groups: uninfected, T. trichiura only, and mixed infections with T. trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides. A sample of uninfected children and those with T. trichiura infections only were given anthelmintic treatment. Bacterial community profiles in faecal samples were studied by 454 pyrosequencing of 16 S rRNA genes.
Results: Microbiota analyses of faeces were done for 97 children: 30 were uninfected, 17 were infected with T. trichiura, and 50 with T. trichiura and A. lumbricoides. Post-treatment samples were analyzed for 14 children initially infected with T. trichiura alone and for 21 uninfected children. Treatment resulted in 100% cure of STH infections. Comparisons of the microbiota at different taxonomic levels showed no statistically significant differences in composition between uninfected
children and those with T. trichiura infections. We observed a decreased proportional abundance of a few bacterial genera from the Clostridia class of Firmicutes and a reduced bacterial diversity among children with mixed infections compared to the other two groups, indicating a possible specific effect of A. lumbricoides infection. Anthelmintic treatment of children with T. trichiura did not alter faecal microbiota composition.
Discussion: Our data indicate that patent human infections with T. trichiura may have no effect on faecal microbiota but that A. lumbricoides colonisation might be associated with a disturbed microbiota. Our results also catalogue the microbiota of rural Ecuadorians and indicate differences with individuals from more urban industrialised societies
