    On the finite-size effects in two segregated Bose-Einstein condensates restricted by a hard wall

    The finite-size effects in two segregated Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) restricted by a hard wall is studied by means of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations in the double-parabola approximation (DPA). Starting from the consistency between the boundary conditions (BCs) imposed on condensates in confined geometry and in the full space, we find all possible BCs together with the corresponding condensate profiles and interface tensions. We discover two finite-size effects: a) The ground state derived from the Neumann BC is stable whereas the ground states derived from the Robin and Dirichlet BCs are unstable. b) Thereby, there equally manifest two possible wetting phase transitions originating from two unstable states. However, the one associated with the Robin BC is more favourable because it corresponds to a smaller interface tension.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    Bioorthogonal Chemical Reporters for Analyzing Protein Sulfenylation in Cells

    Protein sulfenylation (RSOH), the redox‐based modification of cysteine thiol side chains by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), is an important mechanism in signal transduction. Likewise, dysregulated protein sulfenylation contributes to a range of human pathologies, including cancer. Efforts to elucidate the diverse roles of protein sulfenylation in physiology and disease have been hampered by the lack of techniques to probe these modifications in native environments. To address this problem, selective chemical reporters have been developed for the detection and identification of sulfenylated proteins directly in cells. In the approach described here, a cyclic β‐diketone warhead is functionalized with an azide or alkyne chemical handle. An orthogonally functionalized biotin or fluorescent reporter is then appended to the probe post‐homogenization via click chemistry for downstream analysis. These bi‐functional probes are exquisitely selective for protein sulfenyl modifications, non‐toxic, and do not perturb intracellular redox balance. These reagents have been utilized to investigate sulfenylation in vitro and to identify intracellular protein targets of H2O2 during cell signaling. These methods provide a facile way to detect protein sulfenic acids and to study the biological role of cysteine oxidation with regard to physiological and pathological events. Curr. Protoc. Chem.     How swelling debts give rise to a new type of politics in Vietnam

    Vietnam has seen fast-rising debts, both domestic and external, in recent years. This paperreviews the literature on credit market in Vietnam, providing an up-to-date take on the domesticlending and borrowing landscape. The study highlights the strong demand for credit in both therural and urban areas, the ubiquity of informal lenders, the recent popularity of consumer financecompanies, as well as the government’s attempts to rein in its swelling public debt. Given thehigh level of borrowing, which is fueled by consumerism and geopolitics, it is inevitable that theamount of debt will soon be higher than the saving of the borrowers. Unlike the conventional wisdom that creditors have more bargaining power over the borrowers, we suggest that—albeitlacking a quantitative estimation—when the debts pile up so high that the borrowers could not repay, the power dynamics may reverse. In this new politics of debt, the lenders fear to lose the money's worth and continue to lend and feed the insolvent debtors. The result is a toxic lending/borrowing market and profound lessons, from which the developing world could learn

    Colorimetric detection of both total genomic and loci-specific DNA methylation from limited DNA inputs

    Background: Aberrant DNA methylation marks are potential disease biomarkers, and detecting both total genomic and gene-specific DNA methylation can aid in clinical decisions. While a plethora of methods exist in research, simpler, more convenient alternatives are needed to enhance both routine diagnostics and research. Results: Herein, we describe colorimetric assays using methyl-binding domain (MBD) proteins for rapid and convenient evaluation of total genomic and gene-specific methylation from 50\ua0ng or less DNA input in under 2\ua0h. As little as 5\ua0% methylation differences can be detected and are enhanced by a novel MBD protocol for improved specificity. Our assays could differentiate naïve from de-methylating drug-treated cells and detect the presence of a methylated prostate cancer biomarker in the urine. Finally, the assay was evolved onto disposable screen-printed electrodes for convenient detection of gene-specific methylation in urine. Conclusions: Rapid MBD-based colorimetric and electrochemical approaches to detect DNA methylation from limited samples were successfully demonstrated and applied to clinical samples. We envision that the ease, low sample requirements and speed of these assays could have both clinical and research-wide applications

    Implementation of Health Policy on Establishment of Provincial Center of Diseases Control (CDC) in Vietnam

    Purpose: There is increasing interest in the understanding of key influences over successful implementation of health policies within ever-changing contexts of national health systems. The epidemiological transition in Vietnam, combined with an urgent need for improving efficiency of the national health system under the government’s administrative reforms, form important facilitators of restructuring the public health system. This paper explored the implementation processes of policy on establishment of the Centers for Diseases Control (CDC) in Vietnam during 2016– 2019. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional and mixed methods design. Staff surveys were collected at 55 out of 63 provinces and in-depth interviews, focus groups were conducted in three purposefully selected provinces. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The innovation implementation framework guided the study. Results: After 3 years of introduction, 82.5% of provinces had established the CDCs. Implementation of CDC establishment policy was influenced by 1) management support; 2) alignment between policy and practice; 3) values towards CDC,; and 4) implementation climate. Other external key influencers included political, social, and cultural factors. Conclusion: Our study provides a framework and evidence to guide future inquiry into the factors that affect the relationship between policy implementation and other contextual factors in healthcare organizations

    Relativistic dynamical polarizability of hydrogen-like atoms

    Using the operator representation of the Dirac Coulomb Green function the analytical method in perturbation theory is employed in obtaining solutions of the Dirac equation for a hydrogen-like atom in a time-dependent electric field.
