    Multi-mode photonic crystal fibers for VCSEL based data transmission

    Quasi error-free 10 Gbit/s data transmission is demonstrated over a novel type of 50 micron core diameter photonic crystal fiber with as much as 100 m length. Combined with 850$ nm VCSEL sources, this fiber is an attractive alternative to graded-index multi-mode fibers for datacom applications. A comparison to numerical simulations suggests that the high bit-rate may be partly explained by inter-modal diffusion.Comment: Accepted for Optics Expres

    Gas mixing system for imaging of nanomaterials under dynamic environments by environmental transmission electron microscopy

    A gas mixing manifold system that is capable of delivering a stable pressure stream of a desired composition of gases into an environmental transmission electron microscope has been developed. The system is designed to provide a stable imaging environment upon changes of either the composition of the gas mixture or upon switching from one gas to another. The design of the system is described and the response of the pressure inside the microscope, the sample temperature, and sample drift in response to flow and composition changes of the system are reported.     Response of Multi-strip Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber

    A prototype of Multi-strip Multi-gap Resistive Plate chamber (MMRPC) with active area 40 cm ×\times 20 cm has been developed at SINP, Kolkata. Detailed response of the developed detector was studied with the pulsed electron beam from ELBE at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. In this report the response of SINP developed MMRPC with different controlling parameters is described in details. The obtained time resolution (σt\sigma_t) of the detector after slew correction was 91.5± \pm 3 ps. Position resolution measured along (σx\sigma_x) and across (σy\sigma_y) the strip was 2.8±\pm0.6 cm and 0.58 cm, respectively. The measured absolute efficiency of the detector for minimum ionizing particle like electron was 95.8±\pm1.3 %\%. Better timing resolution of the detector can be achieved by restricting the events to a single strip. The response of the detector was mainly in avalanche mode but a few percentage of streamer mode response was also observed.     Large-scale Graphitic Thin Films Synthesized on Ni and Transferred to Insulators: Structural and Electronic Properties

    We present a comprehensive study of the structural and electronic properties of ultrathin films containing graphene layers synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) based surface segregation on polycrystalline Ni foils then transferred onto insulating SiO2/Si substrates. Films of size up to several mm's have been synthesized. Structural characterizations by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) and Raman spectroscopy confirm that such large scale graphitic thin films (GTF) contain both thick graphite regions and thin regions of few layer graphene. The films also contain many wrinkles, with sharply-bent tips and dislocations revealed by XTEM, yielding insights on the growth and buckling processes of the GTF. Measurements on mm-scale back-gated transistor devices fabricated from the transferred GTF show ambipolar field effect with resistance modulation ~50% and carrier mobilities reaching ~2000 cm^2/Vs. We also demonstrate quantum transport of carriers with phase coherence length over 0.2 μ\mum from the observation of 2D weak localization in low temperature magneto-transport measurements. Our results show that despite the non-uniformity and surface roughness, such large-scale, flexible thin films can have electronic properties promising for device applications.Comment: This version (as published) contains additional data, such as cross sectional TEM image

    Physical activity and health-related quality of life among high-risk women for type 2 diabetes in the early years after pregnancy

    Background Previous studies have shown that physical activity (PA) correlates positively with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the general population. Few studies have investigated associations between device-measured PA and HRQoL among premenopausal women at risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). In addition to physical well-being, general well-being improved by PA has been suggested to strengthen PA's benefits in reducing metabolic diseases. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between PA and HRQoL (general and dimensions) among high-risk women in the early post-pregnancy years when T2D risk is highest and to estimate whether current obesity or prior gestational diabetes (GDM) modified these associations. Methods This cross-sectional study of high-risk women [body mass index (BMI) >= 30 kg/m(2) and/or prior GDM)]4-6 years after delivery measured sleep, sedentary time, daily steps, and light (LPA), moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA), and vigorous PA (VPA) with the SenseWear ArmbandTM accelerometer for seven days and HRQoL with the 15D instrument. Results The analyses included 204 women with a median (IQR) age of 39 (6.0) years and a median BMI of 31.1 kg/m(2) (10.9). 54% were currently obese (BMI >= 30 kg/m(2)), and 70% had prior gestational diabetes (GDM+). Women with obesity had lower PA levels than women with normal weight or overweight (p = 30 kg/m(2)), the associations remained significant only in women without obesity. Among them, sleep, total steps, MVPA, and VPA were positively associated with 15D. Conclusions Higher PA levels are associated with better HRQoL among high-risk women with normal weight and overweight but no differences were found among women affected by obesity in the early years after pregnancy.     Towards understanding balancing in exertion games

    Playing exertion games with others can be engaging. However, players with different physical skill levels competing against each other can experience reduced engagement because they are either not challenged enough, or challenged too much. Balancing methods can address this; however, there is only limited understanding of balancing in exertion games. In this paper, we identify two distinct dimensional balancing techniques: "internal adjustment" and "external adjustment". We report results from a study where we measured player engagement after applying these adjustments to a digital table tennis game and the traditional table tennis game, finding two disengagement factors: "unexpected physical challenges" and "unacceptable competitive advantage". Based on these factors we derived a set of exertion game design considerations. We conclude that applying digital technology to a physical game can change the required skill level to play the game, and this can affect the impact of these adjustments on player engagement. These results enhances our understanding of balancing in exertion games, supporting the benefits of playing exertion games with others

    Highly selective plasma-activated copper catalystsfor carbon dioxide reduction to ethylene

    There is an urgent need to develop technologies that use renewable energy to convert waste products such as carbon dioxide into hydrocarbon fuels. Carbon dioxide can be electrochemically reduced to hydrocarbons over copper catalysts, although higher efficiency is required. We have developed oxidized copper catalysts displaying lower overpotentials for carbon dioxide electroreduction and record selectivity towards ethylene (60%) through facile and tunable plasma treatments. Herein we provide insight into the improved performance of these catalysts by combining electrochemical measurements with microscopic and spectroscopic characterization techniques. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy show that copper oxides are surprisingly resistant to reduction and copper+ species remain on the surface during the reaction. Our results demonstrate that the roughness of oxide-derived copper catalysts plays only a partial role in determining the catalytic performance, while the presence of copper+ is key for lowering the onset potential and enhancing ethylene selectivity

    Non-Volatile Control of Valley Polarized Emission in 2D WSe2-AlScN Heterostructures

    Achieving robust and electrically controlled valley polarization in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (ML-TMDs) is a frontier challenge for realistic valleytronic applications. Theoretical investigations show that integration of 2D materials with ferroelectrics is a promising strategy; however, its experimental demonstration has remained elusive. Here, we fabricate ferroelectric field-effect transistors using a ML-WSe2 channel and a AlScN ferroelectric dielectric, and experimentally demonstrate efficient tuning as well as non-volatile control of valley polarization. We measured a large array of transistors and obtained a maximum valley polarization of ~27% at 80 K with stable retention up to 5400 secs. The enhancement in the valley polarization was ascribed to the efficient exciton-to-trion (X-T) conversion and its coupling with an out-of-plane electric field, viz. the quantum-confined Stark effect. This changes the valley depolarization pathway from strong exchange interactions to slow spin-flip intervalley scattering.
