Abstract: Time and space interconnect in the short story “Añejo cinco siglos” from the collection Apenas murmullos (2004). María Elena Llana (1936), the Cuban journalist and writer, using a chronotropic juxtaposition brings together two female characters from different epochs. One is the Galician Doña Isabel de Bobadilla (from the past time) and the other is the Mulata Chabela (from the present time). Both female characters have a dialogue that interconnects two different times and space. They create geographical, political and personal intersections, specifically because their men have left La Habana under different circumstances but with the same goal to settle in Florida. Don Hernando de Soto continues the Spanish Expedition to America leaving Isabel heartbroken while Lazarito has left in a balsa promising Chabela that he would come back. Thus, the purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that the everyday personal interconnections are chronotopes to reconfigure the conditions of crossing geographical and historical frontiers. Nonetheless, in these personal circumstances both women reconfigure narratives about political power and erotic

Fostering Engagement with VoiceThread in Online Intermediate Spanish Language Classes

It is estimated that more than 1.5 billion students have been affected during the course of the global coronavirus pandemic by school and university closures. As a way to navigate this new instructional landscape, the researchers aimed to find a tool that would allow students to develop and practice communicative language skills in their online Spanish classes. In this research study, participants used VoiceThread over the course of a semester and then reflected on their comfort level using communicative skills in Spanish before and after using the tool, as well as whether they perceived that using the platform in their classes helped their language proficiency in the target language, and whether interacting with their peers in Spanish through VoiceThread made the online class experience better. The research findings may be helpful to educators in other contexts, as the tool that the researchers used and the activities that they designed may be compatible with other content, contexts, and class formats

Statistical similarity between the compression of a porous material and earthquakes

It has been long stated that there are profound analogies between fracture experiments and earthquakes; however, few works attempt a complete characterization of the parallelisms between these so separate phenomena. We study the Acoustic Emission events produced during the compression of Vycor (SiO2). The Gutenberg-Richter law, the modified Omori's law, and the law of aftershock productivity are found to hold for a minimum of 5 decades, are independent of the compression rate, and keep stationary for all the duration of the experiments. The waiting-time distribution fulfills a unified scaling law with a power-law exponent close to 2.45 for long times, which is explained in terms of the temporal variations of the activity rate.Comment: 4 pages and a bit more, 4 figure

Are Orchid Bees (Apidae: Euglossini) Good Indicators of the State of Conservation of Neotropical Forests?

    Get PDF
This work discusses the criteria proposed to consider wild bees as bioindicators and specifically applied to orchid bees in neotropical forests. Some of the issues are: 1) the deficiencies of the sampling methods, which makes it difficult to accurately assess species inventories. 2) missing knowledge about the biology of many species. 3) spatial or temporal distribution of most species remains unknown, which may misslead the results of short-term studies. 4) It is not clear whether orchid bees are affected by climate change as seen in other bees, which weakens their predictive potential. 5) A measure of the economic benefits provided by orchid bees is needed to better appraise them and their conservation. Finally, future studies should develop predictive models for conservation, accounting for evolutionary aspects like phylogeny or distributions; together with studies of the effect of disturbance on the physiology of the bees
