Quantitative assessment of angiogenesis in murine antigen-induced arthritis by intravital fluorescence microscopy
Inhibition of angiogenesis might be a therapeutic approach to prevent joint destruction caused by the overgrowing synovial tissue during chronic joint inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate angiogenesis in the knee joint of mice with antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) by means of intravital microscopy. In 14 mice (C57BL6/129Sv) intravital microscopic assessment was performed on day 8 after AIA induction in two groups (controls, AIA). Synovial tissue was investigated by intravital fluorescence microscopy using FITC-dextran (150 kD). Quantitative assessment of vessel density was performed according to the following categories: functional capillary density (FCD, vessels 10 mum) and FVD of vessels with angiogenic criteria (convoluted vessels, abrupt changes of diameter, vessels which are generated by sprouting and progressively pruned and remodelled). Microvessel count was performed using immunohistochemistry. There was no significant difference in FCD between the control group (337 +/- 9 cm/cm(2); mean +/-SEM) and the AIA group (359 +/- 13 cm/cm(2)). The density of vessels larger than 10 gm diameter was significantly increased in animals with AIA (135 +/- 10 vs. 61 +/- 5 cm/cm(2) in control). The density of blood vessels with angiogenic criteria was enhanced in arthritic animals (79 +/- 17 vs. 12 +/- 2 cm/cm(2) in control). There was a significant increase in the microvessel count in arthritic animals (297 +/- 25 vs. 133 +/- 16 mm(-2) in control). These findings demonstrate that angiogenesis in murine AIA can be assessed quantitatively using intravital microscopy. Further studies will address antiangiogenic strategies in AIA
The determinants of wage increases in new manufacturing plants in rural areas
The research reported here was designed to explain variation in wage changes of new industrial plant employees. Following the theoretical perspectives of Gotsch, wage changes were hypothesized to result from a combination of employee household, community, and plant characteristics. Photometric Observations of the Eta Carinae 2009.0 Spectroscopic Event
We have observed Eta Carinae over 34 nights between 4th January 2009 and 27th
March 2009 covering the estimated timeframe for a predicted spectroscopic event
related to a suspected binary system concealed within the homunculus nebula. A
photometric minimum feature was confirmed to be periodic and comparison to a
previous event indicated that the period to within our error at 2022.6 +/-1.0

determined for the local comparison stars were HD303308 8.14+/-0.02, HD 93205
7.77 +/-0.03 and HD93162 8.22 +/-0.05. The latter star was found to be dimmer

Extension of an automatic building extraction technique to airborne laser scanner data containing damaged buildings
Airborne laser scanning systems generate 3-dimensional point clouds of high density and irregular spacing. These data consist of multiple returns coming from terrain, buildings, and vegetation. The major difficulty is the extraction of object categories, usually buildings. In the field of disaster management, the detection of building damages plays an important role. Therefore, the question arises, if damaged buildings can also be detected by a method developed for the automatic extraction of buildings. Another purpose of this study is to extend and test an automatic building detection method developed initially for first echo laser scanner data on data captured in first and last echo. In order to answer these two questions, two institutes share their data and knowledge: the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (IPF, Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Germany) and the MAP-PAGE team (INSA de Strasbourg, France). The used 3D LIDAR data was captured over an area containing undamaged and damaged buildings. The results achieved for every single processing step by applying the original and the extended algorithm to the data are presented, analysed and compared.
