    The art of spacecraft design: A multidisciplinary challenge

    Actual design turn-around time has become shorter due to the use of optimization techniques which have been introduced into the design process. It seems that what, how and when to use these optimization techniques may be the key factor for future aircraft engineering operations. Another important aspect of this technique is that complex physical phenomena can be modeled by a simple mathematical equation. The new powerful multilevel methodology reduces time-consuming analysis significantly while maintaining the coupling effects. This simultaneous analysis method stems from the implicit function theorem and system sensitivity derivatives of input variables. Use of the Taylor's series expansion and finite differencing technique for sensitivity derivatives in each discipline makes this approach unique for screening dominant variables from nondominant variables. In this study, the current Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) aerodynamic and sensitivity derivative/optimization techniques are applied for a simple cone-type forebody of a high-speed vehicle configuration to understand basic aerodynamic/structure interaction in a hypersonic flight condition

    We determine both the in-plane and out-of-plane dynamics of viscoelastic membranes separating two viscous fluids in order to understand microrheological studies of such membranes. We demonstrate the general viscoelastic signatures in the dynamics of shear, bending, and compression modes. We also find a screening of the otherwise two-dimensional character of the response to point forces due to the presence of solvent. Finally, we show that there is a linear, hydrodynamic coupling between the in-plane compression modes of the membrane and the out-of-plane bending modes in the case where the membrane separates two different fluids or environments

    We investigate numerically the statistics of wavefunction amplitudes ψ(r)\psi({\bf r}) at the integer quantum Hall transition. It is demonstrated that in the limit of a large system size the distribution function of ∣ψ∣2|\psi|^2 is log-normal, so that the multifractal spectrum f(α)f(\alpha) is exactly parabolic. Our findings lend strong support to a recent conjecture for a critical theory of the quantum Hall transition.Comment: 4 pages Late

The property of self-similarity under inflation is used to write a recursion relation for the level spacing distributions defined on square approximants to the perfect quasiperiodic structure.     First-principles study of the electrooptic effect in ferroelectric oxides

    We present a method to compute the electrooptic tensor from first principles, explicitly taking into account the electronic, ionic and piezoelectric contributions. It allows us to study the non-linear optic behavior of three ferroelectric ABO_3 compounds : LiNbO_3, BaTiO_3 and PbTiO_3. Our calculations reveal the dominant contribution of the soft mode to the electrooptic coefficients in LiNbO_3 and BaTiO_3 and identify the coupling between the electric field and the polar atomic displacements along the B-O chains as the origin of the large electrooptic response in these compounds.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys.
