ELAN as flexible annotation framework for sound and image processing detectors
Annotation of digital recordings in humanities research still is, to a largeextend, a process that is performed manually. This paper describes the firstpattern recognition based software components developed in the AVATecH projectand their integration in the annotation tool ELAN. AVATecH (AdvancingVideo/Audio Technology in Humanities Research) is a project that involves twoMax Planck Institutes (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen,Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle) and two FraunhoferInstitutes (Fraunhofer-Institut für Intelligente Analyse- undInformationssysteme IAIS, Sankt Augustin, Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute,Berlin) and that aims to develop and implement audio and video technology forsemi-automatic annotation of heterogeneous media collections as they occur inmultimedia based research. The highly diverse nature of the digital recordingsstored in the archives of both Max Planck Institutes, poses a huge challenge tomost of the existing pattern recognition solutions and is a motivation to makesuch technology available to researchers in the humanities
A 3D radiative transfer framework: I. non-local operator splitting and continuum scattering problems
We describe a highly flexible framework to solve 3D radiation transfer
problems in scattering dominated environments based on a long characteristics
piece-wise parabolic formal solution and an operator splitting method. We find
that the linear systems are efficiently solved with iterative solvers such as
Gauss-Seidel and Jordan techniques. We use a sphere-in-a-box test model to
compare the 3D results to 1D solutions in order to assess the accuracy of the
method. We have implemented the method for static media, however, it can be
used to solve problems in the Eulerian-frame for media with low velocity

Pressure-induced hole doping of the Hg-based cuprate superconductors
We investigate the electronic structure and the hole content in the
copper-oxygen planes of Hg based high Tc cuprates for one to four CuO2 layers
and hydrostatic pressures up to 15 GPa. We find that with the pressure-induced
additional number of holes of the order of 0.05e the density of states at the
Fermi level changes approximately by a factor of 2. At the same time the saddle
point is moved to the Fermi level accompanied by an enhanced k_z dispersion.
This finding explains the pressure behavior of Tc and leads to the conclusion
that the applicability of the van Hove scenario is restricted. By comparison
with experiment, we estimate the coupling constant to be of the order of 1,
ruling out the weak coupling limit.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
