    Melting curve of 4^4He: no sign of the supersolid transition down to 10 mK

    We have measured the melting curve of 4^4He in the temperature range from 10 to 400 mK with the accuracy of about 0.5 μ\mubar. Crystals of different quality show the expected T4T^4-dependence in the range from 80 to 400 mK without any sign of the supersolid transition, and the coefficient is in excellent agreement with available data on the sound velocity in liquid 4^4He and on the Debye temperature of solid 4^4He. Below 80 mK we have observed a small deviation from T4T^4-dependence which however cannot be attributed to the supersolid transition because instead of decrease the entropy of the solid rather remains constant, about 2.5×1062.5\times10^{-6} RRComment: 4 pages, 2 figures, published in Physical Review Letter

    Spin susceptibility of the superfluid 3^{3}He-B in aerogel

    The temperature dependence of paramagnetic susceptibility of the superfluid ^{3}He-B in aerogel is found. Calculations have been performed for an arbitrary phase shift of s-wave scattering in the framework of BCS weak coupling theory and the simplest model of aerogel as an aggregate of homogeneously distributed ordinary impurities. Both limiting cases of the Born and unitary scattering can be easily obtained from the general result. The existence of gapless superfluidity starting at the critical impurity concentration depending on the value of the scattering phase has been demonstrated. While larger than in the bulk liquid the calculated susceptibility of the B-phase in aerogel proves to be conspicuously smaller than that determined experimentally in the high pressure region.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, REVTe

    Using an effective Hamiltonian approach, we obtain expressions for hyperon beta decay final-state baryon polarization. Terms through second order in the energy release are retained.     Preliminary Results from NEOWISE: An Enhancement to the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer for Solar System Science

    The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has surveyed the entire sky at four infrared wavelengths with greatly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution compared to its predecessors, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite and the Cosmic Background Explorer. NASA's Planetary Science Division has funded an enhancement to the WISE data processing system called "NEOWISE" that allows detection and archiving of moving objects found in the WISE data. NEOWISE has mined the WISE images for a wide array of small bodies in our solar system, including near-Earth objects (NEOs), Main Belt asteroids, comets, Trojans, and Centaurs. By the end of survey operations in 2011 February, NEOWISE identified over 157,000 asteroids, including more than 500 NEOs and ~120 comets. The NEOWISE data set will enable a panoply of new scientific investigations

    Wetting of Superfluid 4He by Liquid 3He

    We have investigated optically the spreading of He3 on top of the He4-rich solution in phase-separated helium-mixture films, 20-50 μm thick. In equilibrium, the He3 layer wets the He4-rich phase completely, but nearly circular or stripelike pools of He3-rich phase are stabilized instead when He4 atoms are condensed to the liquid sample at the rate 10 exp 15-5 × 10 exp 15 atoms/cm2s. For the contact angle we obtain about 10 mrad, which suggests a fractional change of the He3 surface tension by a factor of 10 exp −5 from the equilibrium value.Peer reviewe

    The implementation of gauge theories on a four-dimensional anisotropic lattice with two distinct lattice spacings is discussed, with special attention to the case where two axes are finely and two axes are coarsely discretized. Feynman rules for the Wilson gauge action are derived and the renormalizability of the theory and the recovery of the continuum limit are analyzed.     Cooled video camera for optical investigations below 1 mK

    An optical imaging system for milliKelvin temperatures has been developed based on a regular B/W surveillance camera (25 frames/s), with its CCD sensor inside the 4‐K vacuum can of our nuclear demagnetization cryostat. The heat leak to the nuclear stage, caused by the operation of the video camera, was reduced below 1 nW by careful rf shielding.     Topological susceptibility from the overlap

    The chiral symmetry at finite lattice spacing of Ginsparg-Wilson fermionic actions constrains the renormalization of the lattice operators; in particular, the topological susceptibility does not require any renormalization, when using a fermionic estimator to define the topological charge. Therefore, the overlap formalism appears as an appealing candidate to study the continuum limit of the topological susceptibility while keeping the systematic errors under theoretical control. We present results for the SU(3) pure gauge theory using the index of the overlap Dirac operator to study the topology of the gauge configurations. The topological charge is obtained from the zero modes of the overlap and using a new algorithm for the spectral flow analysis. A detailed comparison with cooling techniques is presented. Particular care is taken in assessing the systematic errors. Relatively high statistics (500 to 1000 independent configurations) yield an extrapolated continuum limit with errors that are comparable with other methods. Our current value from the overlap is \chi^{1/4} = 188 \pm 12 \pm 5 \MeV.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    Universal Behaviour of the Superfluid Fraction and Tc of He-3 in 99.5% Open Aerogel

    We have investigated the superfluid transition of He-3 in a 99.5% porosity silica aerogel. This very dilute sample shows behaviour intermediary between bulk He-3 and He-3 confined to the denser aerogels previously studied. We present data on both the superfluid transition temperature and the superfluid density and compare our results with previous measurements. Finally, we show that the suppression of the superfluid transition temperature and suppression of the superfluid density of He-3 in aerogel follow a universal relation for a range of aerogel samples.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; 1 new figure, minor change
