CRISPR RNA-guided activation of endogenous human genes
Catalytically inactive CRISPR-associated 9 nuclease (dCas9) can be directed by short guide RNAs (gRNAs) to repress endogenous genes in bacteria and human cells. Here we show that a dCas9-VP64 transcriptional activation domain fusion protein can be directed by single or multiple gRNAs to increase expression of specific endogenous human genes. These results provide an important proof-of-principle that CRISPR-Cas systems can be used to target heterologous effector domains in human cells
Motion in Quantum Gravity
We tackle the question of motion in Quantum Gravity: what does motion mean at
the Planck scale? Although we are still far from a complete answer we consider
here a toy model in which the problem can be formulated and resolved precisely.
The setting of the toy model is three dimensional Euclidean gravity. Before
studying the model in detail, we argue that Loop Quantum Gravity may provide a

Advanced Diagnostics for the Study of Linearly Polarized Emission. II: Application to Diffuse Interstellar Radio Synchrotron Emission
Diagnostics of polarized emission provide us with valuable information on the
Galactic magnetic field and the state of turbulence in the interstellar medium,
which cannot be obtained from synchrotron intensity alone. In Paper I (Herron
et al. 2017b), we derived polarization diagnostics that are rotationally and
translationally invariant in the - plane, similar to the polarization
gradient. In this paper, we apply these diagnostics to simulations of ideal
magnetohydrodynamic turbulence that have a range of sonic and Alfv\'enic Mach
numbers. We generate synthetic images of Stokes and for these
simulations, for the cases where the turbulence is illuminated from behind by
uniform polarized emission, and where the polarized emission originates from
within the turbulent volume. From these simulated images we calculate the
polarization diagnostics derived in Paper I, for different lines of sight
relative to the mean magnetic field, and for a range of frequencies. For all of
our simulations, we find that the polarization gradient is very similar to the
generalized polarization gradient, and that both trace spatial variations in
the magnetoionic medium for the case where emission originates within the
turbulent volume, provided that the medium is not supersonic. We propose a
method for distinguishing the cases of emission coming from behind or within a
turbulent, Faraday rotating medium, and a method to partly map the rotation
measure of the observed region. We also speculate on statistics of these
diagnostics that may allow us to constrain the physical properties of an

Physiological and psychological effects of olfactory stimulation with D-limonene
Although D-Limonene can be considered an important component of nature-based stimuli, the physiological effects of olfactory stimulation with D-Limonene have not been completely clarified by scientific studies. The physiological and psychological effects of olfactory stimulation with D-Limonene were studied measuring heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate, and subjective evaluation using a modified semantic differential method; thirteen Japanese female university students (mean age±SD, 21.5±1.0 years) participated in the study. A concentration of 60 μL of D-Limonene was used as olfactory stimulant and room air as control. Subjects were exposed for 90 s while sitting with eyes closed. During D-Limonene inhalation: (1) the high-frequency (HF) value of HRV, a marker of parasympathetic nervous activity that is enhanced in relaxing situations, was significantly higher; (2) the heart rate was significantly lower; and (3) subjects reported feeling significantly more comfortable during D-Limonene administration than control. The results obtained clearly indicate that olfactory stimulation with D-Limonene induced physiological and psychological relaxation, providing important scientific evidence of the health benefits of D-Limonene
On the cubic interactions of massive and partially-massless higher spins in (A)dS
Cubic interactions of massive and partially-massless totally-symmetric
higher-spin fields in any constant-curvature background of dimension greater
than three are investigated. Making use of the ambient-space formalism, the
consistency condition for the traceless and transverse parts of the
parity-invariant interactions is recast into a system of partial differential
equations. The latter can be explicitly solved for given s_1-s_2-s_3 couplings
and the 2-2-2 and 3-3-2 examples are provided in detail for general choices of
the masses. On the other hand, the general solutions for the interactions
involving massive and massless fields are expressed in a compact form as
generating functions of all the consistent couplings. The St\"uckelberg
formulation of the cubic interactions as well as their massless limits are also

The GALFA-HI Compact Cloud Catalog
We present a catalog of 1964 isolated, compact neutral hydrogen clouds from
the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array Survey Data Release One (GALFA-HI DR1).
The clouds were identified by a custom machine-vision algorithm utilizing
Difference of Gaussian kernels to search for clouds smaller than 20'. The
clouds have velocities typically between |VLSR| = 20-400 km/s, linewidths of
2.5-35 km/s, and column densities ranging from 1 - 35 x 10^18 cm^-2. The
distances to the clouds in this catalog may cover several orders of magnitude,
so the masses may range from less than a Solar mass for clouds within the
Galactic disc, to greater than 10^4 Solar Masses for HVCs at the tip of the
Magellanic Stream. To search for trends, we separate the catalog into five
populations based on position, velocity, and linewidth: high velocity clouds
(HVCs); galaxy candidates; cold low velocity clouds (LVCs); warm, low
positive-velocity clouds in the third Galactic Quadrant; and the remaining warm
LVCs. The observed HVCs are found to be associated with previously-identified
HVC complexes. We do not observe a large population of isolated clouds at high
velocities as some models predict. We see evidence for distinct histories at
low velocities in detecting populations of clouds corotating with the Galactic

Black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity: A review
We review recent progress in the construction of black holes in three
dimensional higher spin gravity theories. Starting from spin-3 gravity and
working our way toward the theory of an infinite tower of higher spins coupled
to matter, we show how to harness higher spin gauge invariance to consistently
generalize familiar notions of black holes. We review the construction of black
holes with conserved higher spin charges and the computation of their partition
functions to leading asymptotic order. In view of the AdS/CFT correspondence as
applied to certain vector-like conformal field theories with extended conformal
symmetry, we successfully compare to CFT calculations in a generalized Cardy
regime. A brief recollection of pertinent aspects of ordinary gravity is also

Plasma Zinc But Not the Exchangeable Zinc Pool Size Differs Between Young and Older Korean Women
This study was done to determine the effect of age on zinc metabolism and status among healthy Korean women. Measures of zinc metabolism and status were measured in eight young women (22–24 years) and seven elderly women (66–75 years) consuming a typical Korean diet. Oral and intravenous tracers highly enriched in 67Zn and 70Zn were administered simultaneously. Multiple plasma, 24-h urines, and fecal samples were collected after isotope administration. In the young women, additional plasma were collected to determine zinc kinetics using a seven-compartmental model. Exchangeable Zinc Pool (EZP) was estimated by Miller’s method. Plasma zinc concentrations were higher in older women than younger women (p < 0.05). EZP and urinary zinc tended to be higher in older women than younger women. Fractional and total zinc absorption and endogenous fecal zinc losses did not differ between young and older women. A comparison of the zinc kinetics of the Korean and American women showed no differences in plasma or EZP zinc parameters. However, absorbed zinc and zinc flux to slowly turning over tissues (Q7) were lower in Korean women than that of Americans (p < 0.01) suggesting the total body zinc content of Korean women is lower than that of American women

Galilean quantum gravity with cosmological constant and the extended q-Heisenberg algebra
We define a theory of Galilean gravity in 2+1 dimensions with cosmological
constant as a Chern-Simons gauge theory of the doubly-extended Newton-Hooke
group, extending our previous study of classical and quantum gravity in 2+1
dimensions in the Galilean limit. We exhibit an r-matrix which is compatible
with our Chern-Simons action (in a sense to be defined) and show that the
associated bi-algebra structure of the Newton-Hooke Lie algebra is that of the
classical double of the extended Heisenberg algebra. We deduce that, in the
quantisation of the theory according to the combinatorial quantisation
programme, much of the quantum theory is determined by the quantum double of
the extended q-deformed Heisenberg algebra.Comment: 22 page
