Variation in gas chromatography (GC) analysis in setting up laboratory protocols for waste to energy novel fixed bed reactor setups

Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) has been applied in various analytical chemistry works. However, to fine tune a system that can serve the purposes of pyrolysis oil identification has proven to be a laborious effort, especially when considering the fact that no standard protocol exists for such analysis. In addition, obtained products were yielded from a newly commissioned unit with a unique and novel design. In this study, a US patent office claimed reactor [SULTAN-1, Pyrolysis Reactor System for the Conversion and Analysis of Organic Solid Waste, Patent application number: 15,487,351] that degrades polyolefinc virgin and waste materials to obtain petroleum refinery and petrochemical feedstock, has been commissioned. The reactor produces three distinct physical states of matter products accumulated as testing specimens, i.e. solids, gaseous and oil. The samples analysed in this work were of the gas and oil produced by pyrolysis of end of life tyre (ELTs) shavings that required to have a special recipe to work with in the laboratory. Various MS cords were utilised and experimental setups to fine tune the process, and special emphasis was given on the gas samples variation in this communication. To reach the desired analysis results with high repeatability, a plethora of experiences of lab personnel and laboratory-based experimental work was accumulated. Laboratory protocols were also setup for this work. These will be detailed along the process execution which yielded a standard laboratory best practice analytical method as part of the State of Kuwait newly initiated Government Initiative project

IFRS Suitability to Emerging Markets: Empirical Evidence from Qatar

    Get PDF
Most of the countries in GCC region (except Saudi Arabia) have adapted IFRS in 1990s except Oman who was the first to adopt in 1986. Therefore, it can be concluded that, Qatar is one of the countries which adopted IFRS since long time ago. However, no serious discussion was there so far to see whether IFRS adoption in emerging economy country like Qatar is feasible or it has been taken as granted. The adoption of IFRS at country level has sparked two contrasting, but not mutually exclusive viewpoints. One view, which favors IFRS adoption, is that IFRS produces better financial reporting since it is superior accounting standards in comparison to domestic accounting standards (Barth 2008). Additionally, convergence to a singular accounting standard ensures greater comparability that helps investors to make their investment decisions. It results improvement of information environment in a country and hence contribute towards lowering the cost of capital (Barth 2008). The opposite view is that, the accounting quality is shaped by political and economic forces (Ball 2006) and therefore Accounting standard solely will not translate into higher quality reporting. The main objective of the study is to assess the suitability of' International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for emerging market such as Qatar; specifically, the current research explore advantages and disadvantages of IFRS implementation in Qatar. From the prior studies perspective, we found that IFRS is suitable for Qatar for many reasons. First of all, most of the companies in Qatar are characterized by insider dominated ownership structure. Therefore, majority of the shares are owned by the family owners. Also, the influences of institutional investors are in a greater margin in Qatari Stock Market. Moreover, the code of corporate governance in Qatar was just implemented three years back in 2009. As discussed earlier, the law system in Qatar is also very weak in regard to financial reporting. In these circumstances, IFRS can play a big role in Qatar since it is an advanced reporting standard developed and it could ensure that all the information are there for the shareholders and no asymmetric information situation could happen and ensures the rights of individual shareholders. Since Qatar is undergoing major development for the World Cup 2022 and National Vision 2030, it is important for Qatar to attract foreign investors for capital market. IFRS implementation will help Qatar to ensure foreign investors in gaining confidence in Qatari capital market. Furthermore, Qatar has adopted IFRS in 1995 and before that no specific requirement was that which is more established and strictly adopted by the companies. Therefore, Qatar didn't face a lot of issues while the adoption process. However, countries like Australia, Spain who were having their own developed standard faced a lot of issue since they were having their own standard practiced for a period of time. Thus, the current study concluded that IFRS implementation is suitable for the economy of Qatar considering its benefits, Qatari corporate ownership structure and commercial law of Qatar. Although, Qatar is following IFRS without any amendments by considering their own culture, economic environment and corporate governance, however, their implementation was very strong with the existence of big four international audit firm and regulation from Qatar Central Bank and Qatar Financial Market Authority. Furthermore, many of the Qatari companies such as QTEL, QNB are listed in internationally in various stock exchanges because they are following IFRS for their financial report. Finally, we conclude saying that, despite come short coming are there, it is beneficial to adopt IFRS for an emerging country like Qatar.qscienc

Many configurations of EDFA producing triple pass EDFAs have been used, however, only two configurations are commonly used in the optical fiber communication system due to their high performance. Those two configurations are configured in a double stage EDFA. The first configuration is (configuration A) consists of a single-pass EDFA as the first stage and a double-pass EDFA as the second stage. The second configuration is (Configuration B) which consists of a double-pass EDFA as the first stage and a single-pass EDFA as the second stage. The Literature shows the use of triple pass EDFA is either with configuration A or configuration B and literature also shows there is no theoretical analysis and comparison between the performance of two Triple-pass EDFA configurations A and B. This paper focus on the performance analysis of both configurations A and B. The importantance of this research is the theoretical analyses that analyze the performance of those two configurations and illustrate a comparison between them. This comparison is important to show which of the two configurations is more reliable in amplifying optical signal for the fiber optic communication systems

Discrepancy in the Critical State Void Ratio of Poorly Graded Sand due to Shear Strain Localization

The critical state (CS) concept is a theoretical framework that models the constitutive behavior of soils, including sand and other granular materials. It supports the notion of a unique postfailure state, where the soil ultimately experiences continuous shearing with no change in the plastic volumetric strain. However, the published literature has frequently noted the nonconvergence of sand specimens with different initial densities to a unique CS in the compression plane due to many factors such as specimen fabric, particle morphology, breakage, and grain size distribution. This paper examines the CS for poorly graded (uniform) glass beads and 3 different types of silica sands using 50 conventional triaxial compression (CTC) experiments, 12 oedometer tests, and in situ synchrotron microcomputed tomography (SMT) scans for 10 CTC experiments. The results of the 50 CTC experiments revealed a diffused CS zone in the compression plane, which was further examined using the in situ SMT scans. A thorough three-dimensional image analysis of the SMT scans accurately quantified the evolution of the local void ratio (elocal ) versus axial compression within zones of intensive shearing toward the center of the specimen. The evolution of the void ratio was also measured using the entire volume of the specimen (eglobal ). At the CS, the elocal/eglobal ratio was assessed to be ∼1.25 when a single shear band developed within the scanned specimens and ∼1.1–1.15 for specimens that failed via external bulging that was internally manifested by the development of multiple shear bands. This finding suggests that the CS zone in the compression plane can be attributed to the common wrong consideration of eglobal evolution in lieu of elocal within the developing shear bands. Furthermore, the lack of shear band development in uniaxial compression has made the results of the oedometer test reliable in quantifying the CS parameters in the compression plane. This material was partially funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) under Grant CMMI-1266230.
