Impact Of Gender Related Legal Reugulations On Pursuing Sustainable Development: A Study Of Kuwait's National Development Plan (2035)

    Get PDF
This thesis seeks to analyze the impact of gender inequality on the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 as expressed in the UN Post-Millennium global program. More specifically, it aims to illustrate how gender equality and empowerment are essential to sustainable development, and argues that gender-based discrimination hinders national development visions and goals. In order to illustrate the effect of gender inequality on political and economic development, the thesis will focus on the institutional and legal discrimination in the Kuwaiti Nationality Law in order to show how structural gender discrimination in public policy will challenge and hinder the Kuwait National Development Plan 2035. Recognizing the complexity of gender, class and tribal dynamics in Kuwaiti society, and notwithstanding the pitfalls of some of the global development paradigms, the thesis contends that gender equality, legally, economically, and politically, provide the most viable platform for achieving and realizing national development aspirations in Kuwait. Finally, this thesis will present the challenges and prospects for national development strategies and provide policy recommendations

Effects of density and hunger on the spatial distribution and pit construction behaviour of the antlion larvae (Myrmeleon spp.)

The antlion larvae are sessile predaceous larvae, which depend on active prey for their food. They dig conical pit in loose fine sand and remain at the bottom of their pits with their long piercing jaws from where they seize and remove the body fluids of the ant and other arthropods that slide into their trap. The effects of hunger and density on the spatial distribution and pit construction by the larvae were studied for the three instar stages in fine and coarse sand textures of particles size of <540 μm and <1200 μm respectively.Twenty four (24) Iron trays of 25cm2 each filled with sand to the depth of 20cm were used in the study. The result of the findings reveals that with the increase in density, there was an increased in spatial uniformity and the pits became uniformly distributed. The diameters of the pit were not statistically affected by the changes in the larval density. There was difference between the total number of pits constructed between sand textures and not between the larval instars, in addition, nearest neighbor distance decreases with increase in density and with no effect on pit diameter. Pit diameter increases with hunger level and Antlion move pit to reducedisturbances and to improve food supply. The result analysis showed significant differences in the mean number of pits constructed between densities, sand texture and larval instars at P< 0.01 but none between fed and larval instar. Keywords: Antlion, Construction, Density, Distribution, Hunger, Larvae, Pit

Aesthetics of Space Organization: Lessons From Traditional European Cities

    Get PDF
For centuries the aesthetic significance of space organization has been one of the significant subjects of study for most artists, architects, urban designers and philosophers. Cities which experience diverse stages of growth transmit dissimilar aesthetic values due to their locations, culture, history and background. This research will try to take out the aesthetic values of the traditional European cities through the literature on aesthetic of urban design. Accordingly, this study reflects the term urban aesthetics in spatial organization. It tries to answer the question of how space organization can lead to the aesthetic understanding of a place. The methodology for this study developed based on grounded theory study and qualitative assessments of European cities thorough the literature review. Overall, the study assessed integration, visual connectivity, vitality, spatial quality, as the main factors in shaping the aesthetic quality of the urban environment in European traditional cities. At the end, it proposed the findings to apply in contemporary urban designing

Synthesis and Characterization of Starch-Graft-Acrylamide Hydrogel for Oral Drug Delivery

In this research, starch was extracted from fresh sweet potato and was used to prepare starch-g-acrylamide hydrogel using free radical polymerization method with potassium per sulphate and N’N-Methylene bisacrylamide as initiator and cross-linker, respectively. The swelling capacity and pH sensitivity of the synthesized hydrogel were investigated in solutions of various pH (1-12). The drug loading and release experiment was also carried out using promethazine (PMZ) as the model drug at 25oC and 37oC, respectively while the release study was carried out in an enzyme-free simulated gastric intestinal fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). The result showed a 905% swelling at pH 11, suggesting increased swelling capacity at higher pH values. Drug loading result indicated 99% of the drug was entrapped by the hydrogel as confirmed by UV-visible spectrophotometry. SIF and SGF Simulation indicated a 24% and 9% drug release for the first ten hours. At the end of 48 hours the release was 96% and 89%, respectively indicating the hydrogel released more promethazine in SIF than in SGF. The results obtained in this work suggest that starch-graft-acrylamide hydrogel is a potential vehicle for oral drug delivery. Keywords: Starch, Acrylamide, Hydrogel, Drug delivery

Colorectal carcinoma associated with schistosomiasis: a possible causal relationship

    Get PDF
The association between schistosomiasis and colorectal malignancy has long been suggested in the literature, but it is not uniformly accepted. In the Far East, considerable evidence supports an etiological link between Schistosoma japonicum and colorectal cancer. However, the available data regarding the role of Schistosoma mansoni in colorectal carcinogenesis are conflicting and most often do not show causality. We report on a patient with sigmoid colonic cancer coexisting with schistosomiasis, and we provide a comprehensive review of the literature regarding the epidemiology and pathobiology of this association
