    Flipperons for Improved Aerodynamic Performance

    Get PDF
Lightweight, piezoelectrically actuated bending flight-control surfaces have shown promise as means of actively controlling airflows to improve the performances of transport airplanes. These bending flight-control surfaces are called flipperons because they look somewhat like small ailerons, but, unlike ailerons, are operated in an oscillatory mode reminiscent of the actions of biological flippers. The underlying concept of using flipperons and other flipperlike actuators to impart desired characteristics to flows is not new. Moreover, elements of flipperon-based active flow-control (AFC) systems for aircraft had been developed previously, but it was not until the development reported here that the elements have been integrated into a complete, controllable prototype AFC system for wind-tunnel testing to enable evaluation of the benefits of AFC for aircraft. The piezoelectric actuator materials chosen for use in the flipperons are single- crystal solid solutions of lead zinc niobate and lead titanate, denoted generically by the empirical formula (1-x)[Pb(Zn(1/3)Nb(2/3))O3]:x[PbTiO3] (where x<1) and popularly denoted by the abbreviation PZN-PT. These are relatively newly recognized piezoelectric materials that are capable of strain levels exceeding 1 percent and strain-energy densities 5 times greater than those of previously commercially available piezoelectric materials. Despite their high performance levels, (1-x)[Pb(Zn(1/3)Nb(2/3))O3]:x[PbTiO3] materials have found limited use until now because, relative to previously commercially available piezoelectric materials, they tend to be much more fragile

Research methods used are explorative survey and Participatory Rural Appraisal through interview with a village shaman (or called person who has ability and experience with traditional medicine) followed with sampling and identifying medication plant in research location. Result of identifying research and used of medication plant in 9 villages in Asologaima, Kurulu, and Wamena Districts, found that 16 species of plant medication of 12 family which used by local society with different benefits and the way it is used and simple but commonly with boiled the medication and drink the water. This research held in September to November 2016. Based on the place of habits the most found plants is shrub, meanwhile the most useful part of the plant is lea

OptEEmAL: Decision-Support Tool for the Design of Energy Retrofitting Projects at District Level

    Get PDF
Designing energy retrofitting actions poses an elevated number of problems, as the definition of the baseline, selection of indicators to measure performance, modelling, setting objectives, etc. This is time-consuming and it can result in a number of inaccuracies, leading to inadequate decisions. While these problems are present at building level, they are multiplied at district level, where there are complex interactions to analyse, simulate and improve. OptEEmAL proposes a solution as a decision-support tool for the design of energy retrofitting projects at district level. Based on specific input data (IFC(s), CityGML, etc.), the platform will automatically simulate the baseline scenario and launch an optimisation process where a series of Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) will be applied to this scenario. Its performance will be evaluated through a holistic set of indicators to obtain the best combination of ECMs that complies with user's objectives. A great reduction in time and higher accuracy in the models are experienced, since they are automatically created and checked. A subjective problem is transformed into a mathematical problem; it simplifies it and ensures a more robust decision-making. This paper will present a case where the platform has been tested. This research work has been partially funded by the European Commission though the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No 680676. Smart Campus Framework: A Solution for New Normal Education System

    Get PDF
The Covid-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of human life and has even forced humans to shift their life habits, including in the world of education. The learning model must shift from the traditional to modern synchronous or asynchronous models with information technology-based applications. This condition is known as the New Normal era in the education system. Y Generation and Z Generation as educational objects are now very close to technology, especially information technology, including in the teaching and learning process, so there is no need for extra effort in this regard. Therefore, it is essential to create a learning environment under the characteristics of this generation and can also support the new normal era of the education system. We offer the concept of a smart campus framework that integrates an IT-based learning system and a hybrid smart classroom system as a modern education method in an educational scenario that promises to accelerate quality education without leaving a good learning process. This article designs the concept of a smart campus framework that will accommodate a learning model that will accelerate the improvement of the quality of education through smart learning solutions and smart blended learning systems. We also offer achievements in improving service performance through smart academic services solutions and accommodating the management of existing classroom resources through smart equipment system solutions. This framework is designed to automatically solve all university-level education system problems based on multimedia and integrated with websites and information systems used on campus

Scholarly communication in transition: The use of question marks in the titles of scientific articles in medicine, life sciences and physics 1966–2005

    Get PDF
The titles of scientific articles have a special significance. We examined nearly 20 million scientific articles and recorded the development of articles with a question mark at the end of their titles over the last 40 years. Our study was confined to the disciplines of physics, life sciences and medicine, where we found a significant increase from 50% to more than 200% in the number of articles with question-mark titles. We looked at the principle functions and structure of the titles of scientific papers, and we assume that marketing aspects are one of the decisive factors behind the growing usage of question-mark titles in scientific articles

Paging Materials to Maintain Quality Library Service During a Two-Year Renovation

    Get PDF
Beginning in July 2002, the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill underwent an 11 million dollar renovation. During three phases of the renovation, parts of the collection were inaccessible to patrons. In order to continue to make the library’s collection available, library staff created a paging system. Patrons submitted requests for needed library materials using paper and electronic forms and library staff retrieved the requested items. The paging service was modified three times based on prior experience. Patrons were generally satisfied with the service. The renovation ended in December 2004

Standardization of shape memory alloy test methods toward certification of aerospace applications

    Get PDF
The response of shape memory alloy (SMA) components employed as actuators has enabled a number of adaptable aero-structural solutions. However, there are currently no industry or government-accepted standardized test methods for SMA materials when used as actuators and their transition to commercialization and production has been hindered. This brief fast track communication introduces to the community a recently initiated collaborative and pre-competitive SMA specification and standardization effort that is expected to deliver the first ever regulatory agency-accepted material specification and test standards for SMA as employed as actuators for commercial and military aviation applications. In the first phase of this effort, described herein, the team is working to review past efforts and deliver a set of agreed-upon properties to be included in future material certification specifications as well as the associated experiments needed to obtain them in a consistent manner. Essential for the success of this project is the participation and input from a number of organizations and individuals, including engineers and designers working in materials and processing development, application design, SMA component fabrication, and testing at the material, component, and system level. Going forward, strong consensus among this diverse body of participants and the SMA research community at large is needed to advance standardization concepts for universal adoption by the greater aerospace community and especially regulatory bodies. It is expected that the development and release of public standards will be done in collaboration with an established standards development organization
