    Electronic transport anisotropy of 2D carriers in biaxial compressive strained germanium

    The anisotropic nature of carrier mobility in simple cubic crystalline semiconductors, such as technologically important silicon and germanium, is well understood as a consequence of effective mass anisotropy arising from a change in band structure along non-identical surface crystal directions. In contrast to this, we show experimentally that this type of anisotropy is not the dominant contribution. Recent advances in epitaxial growth of high quality germanium enabled the appearance of high mobility 2D carriers suitable for such an experiment. A strong anisotropy of 2D carrier mobility, effective mass, quantum, and transport lifetime has been observed, through measurements of quantum phenomena at low temperatures, between the ⟨110⟩ and ⟨100⟩ in-plane crystallographic directions. These results have important consequences for electronic devices and sensor designs and suggest similar effects could be observed in technologically relevant and emerging materials such as SiGe, SiC, GeSn, GeSnSi, and C (Diamond)

    The hydrolysis of proteins by microwave energy

    Microwave energy, at manually-adjusted, partial power settings has been used to hydrolyse bovine serum albumin at 125 °C. Hydrolysis was complete within 2 h, except for valine and isoleucine which were completely liberated within 4 h. The aminoacid destruction was less than that observed at similar hydrolysis conditions with other methods and complete hydrolysis was achieved more rapidly. These results provide a basis for automating the process of amino-acid hydrolysis

    Quantifying the Variation in Protein Content in White Clover (\u3cem\u3eTrifolium Repens\u3c/em\u3e L.)

    White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is the main legume in temperate pastures. It has relatively low levels of water-soluble carbohydrate but produces forage of high quality with a high crude protein (CP) content and dry-matter digestibility (Beever, 1993). Some studies have suggested that the forage quality of white clover can be problematic because its high CP content may contribute to inefficient use of nitrogen in the rumen and exacerbate diffuse pollution via excreta (Waghorn & Caradus, 1994). The development of white clover germplasm with lower CP content would potentially benefit forage production and grassland management. A study was carried out to quantify the variation in CP content within an existing gene pool and develop high throughput techniques for protein determination appropriate to a plant breeding programme

    The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014: implications for sex workers and their clients

    © 2015 Taylor & Francis. The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 introduced new powers to deal with behaviour deemed to be ‘anti-social’. In this paper we consider how the new law could be used against sex workers and their clients and the impact this may have. Although the new powers were not intentionally designed to respond to prostitution, we suggest that they will be utilised to tackle it. We argue that the law will be used inconsistently in a way which will go directly against policy which seeks to ‘tackle demand’ and take a less punitive approach to dealing with sex workers. Despite a policy shift to see sex workers more as victims and less as offenders, we draw on existing evidence to demonstrate that the new anti-social behaviour order law will be utilised to exclude street sex workers from public spaces. We claim that a degree of ‘policy re-fraction’ will occur when the new laws are implemented by practitioners

    Abstract Tissue-resident memory CD4 T (TRMT_{RM}) cells induced by infection with Bordetella pertussis persist in respiratory tissues and confer long-term protective immunity against re-infection. However, it is not clear how they are maintained in respiratory tissues. Here we demonstrate that B. pertussis-specific CD4 TRMT_{RM} cells produce IL-17A in response to in vitro stimulation with LPS or heat-killed Klebsiella pneumoniae (HKKP) in the presence of dendritic cells. Furthermore, IL-17A-secreting CD4 TRMT_{RM} cells expand in the lung and nasal tissue of B. pertussis convalescent mice following in vivo administration of LPS or HKKP. Bystander activation of CD4 TRMT_{RM} cells was suppressed by anti-IL-12p40, but not by anti-MHCII antibodies. Furthermore, purified respiratory tissue-resident, but not circulating, CD4 T cells from convalescent mice produced IL-17A following direct stimulation with IL-23 and IL-1β\beta or IL-18. Intranasal immunization of mice with a whole cell pertussis vaccine induced respiratory CD4 TRMT_{RM} cells that were re-activated following stimulation with K. pneumoniae. Furthermore, the nasal pertussis vaccine conferred protective immunity against B. pertussis but also attenuated infection with K. pneumoniae. Our findings demonstrate CD4 TRMT_{RM} cells induced by respiratory infection or vaccination can undergo bystander activation and confer heterologous immunity to an unrelated respiratory pathogen

    Diatom analysis of lake sedimentshasbecome one of the most important techniques used in the contemporary debate on lake acidification. In recent years the relationship between diatom assemblages and pH has been quantified allowing the pH history of individual lakes to be reconstructed. Much reliance is placed on these reconstructions yet we have little understanding of the causal mechanisms that underlie the impressive statistics. There has been little research on the ecology and physiology of diatom taxa in acid and acidifying waters and we have little information on the role of either planktonic or non-planktonic diatoms in acid lake ecosystems. This Workshop, hence, was not only devoted to the exchange of information on current research projects but also to a discussion of some of the ecological questions that require resolution to improve our understanding of the diatom:pH relationship
