Mixed Boundary Conditions and Brane-String Bound States

In this article we consider open strings with mixed boundary conditions (a combination of Neumann and Dirichlet conditions at each end). We discuss how their end points show a DpD_p-brane with NS-NS charge, i.e. a bound state of a D-brane with a fundamental strings. We show that these branes are BPS saturated. In the case of one-branes, we show that their mass densities are in agreement with IIb SUGRA which is Sl(2,Z) invariant. Using Chan-Paton factors, we extend our results to the case of bound states of nn D-strings and mm F-strings. These string theoretic results are also checked in the effective field theory limit.Comment: Latex file, 20 pages, No Figures, some paragraphs adde

Global Existence Results and Uniqueness for Dislocation Equations

    Get PDF
We are interested in nonlocal Eikonal Equations arising in the study of the dynamics of dislocations lines in crystals. For these nonlocal but also non monotone equations, only the existence and uniqueness of Lipschitz and local-in-time solutions were available in some particular cases. In this paper, we propose a definition of weak solutions for which we are able to prove the existence for all time. Then we discuss the uniqueness of such solutions in several situations, both in the monotone and non monotone case

An Optimal Execution Problem with Market Impact

We study an optimal execution problem in a continuous-time market model that considers market impact. We formulate the problem as a stochastic control problem and investigate properties of the corresponding value function. We find that right-continuity at the time origin is associated with the strength of market impact for large sales, otherwise the value function is continuous. Moreover, we show the semi-group property (Bellman principle) and characterise the value function as a viscosity solution of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. We introduce some examples where the forms of the optimal strategies change completely, depending on the amount of the trader's security holdings and where optimal strategies in the Black-Scholes type market with nonlinear market impact are not block liquidation but gradual liquidation, even when the trader is risk-neutral.Comment: 36 pages, 8 figures, a modified version of the article "An optimal execution problem with market impact" in Finance and Stochastics (2014

The value function of an asymptotic exit-time optimal control problem

We consider a class of exit--time control problems for nonlinear systems with a nonnegative vanishing Lagrangian. In general, the associated PDE may have multiple solutions, and known regularity and stability properties do not hold. In this paper we obtain such properties and a uniqueness result under some explicit sufficient conditions. We briefly investigate also the infinite horizon problem

On the Large Time Behavior of Solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi Equations Associated with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions

    Get PDF
In this article, we study the large time behavior of solutions of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi Equations, set in a bounded domain with nonlinear Neumann boundary conditions, including the case of dynamical boundary conditions. We establish general convergence results for viscosity solutions of these Cauchy-Neumann problems by using two fairly different methods : the first one relies only on partial differential equations methods, which provides results even when the Hamiltonians are not convex, and the second one is an optimal control/dynamical system approach, named the "weak KAM approach" which requires the convexity of Hamiltonians and gives formulas for asymptotic solutions based on Aubry-Mather sets

Convergence of nonlocal threshold dynamics approximations to front propagation

In this note we prove that appropriately scaled threshold dynamics-type algorithms corresponding to the fractional Laplacian of order α(0,2)\alpha \in (0,2) converge to moving fronts. When α1\alpha \geqq 1 the resulting interface moves by weighted mean curvature, while for α<1\alpha <1 the normal velocity is nonlocal of ``fractional-type.'' The results easily extend to general nonlocal anisotropic threshold dynamics schemes.Comment: 19 page
