    Classes of behavior of small-world networks

    Small-world networks are the focus of recent interest because they appear to circumvent many of the limitations of either random networks or regular lattices as frameworks for the study of interaction networks of complex systems. Here, we report an empirical study of the statistical properties of a variety of diverse real-world networks. We present evidence of the occurrence of three classes of small-world networks: (a) scale-free networks, characterized by a vertex connectivity distribution that decays as a power law; (b) broad-scale networks, characterized by a connectivity distribution that has a power-law regime followed by a sharp cut-off; (c) single-scale networks, characterized by a connectivity distribution with a fast decaying tail. Moreover, we note for the classes of broad-scale and single-scale networks that there are constraints limiting the addition of new links. Our results suggest that the nature of such constraints may be the controlling factor for the emergence of different classes of networks

    Social Debt in Software Engineering: Insights from Industry

    Social debt is analogous to technical debt in many ways: it represents the state of software development organisations as the result of “accumulated” decisions. In the case of social debt, decisions are about people and their interactions. Our objective was to study the causality around social debt in practice. In so doing, we conducted exploratory qualitative research in a large software company. We found many forces together causing social debt; we represented them in a framework, and captured anti-patterns that led to the debt in the first place. Finally, we elicited best practices that technicians adopted to pay back some of the accumulated debt. We learned that social debt is strongly correlated with technical debt and both forces should be reckoned with together during the software process

    Towards a European master programme on global software engineering

    This paper presents a European Master programme on global software engineering (SE), being put forward by four leading institutions from Sweden, UK, Netherlands and Italy. The Global SE European Master (GSEEM) programme aims to provide students with an excellence in SE based on sound theoretical foundations and practical experience, as well as prepare them to participate in global development of complex and large software systems. GSEEM has been designed with three noteworthy aspects: 1) Three specialization profiles in which the consortium excels: Software Architecting, Real-time Embedded Systems Engineering, and Web Systems and Services Engineering. 2) Two market-driven routes: "professional" to work as professionals, and "scientific" to continue the education towards research degrees. 3) An innovative concept of "shared modules", delivered together by multiple institutions. Four types of shared modules are foreseen: "parallel" twin modules which run remotely between universities, "shifted" modules which teach SE concepts incrementally with shifts in study locations and timeline ,"complementary" modules in which complementary SE concepts are taught in parallel through shared projects, and "common" modules which share the presentations and the project. The profiles realize "integrated knowledge" by complementing partial knowledge available at partner institutions. The paper explains how GSEEM achieves the objectives of educating global software engineers

Dichelonyx magnesae McPeak and Lago, new species, and Dichelonyx bajaensis McPeak and Lago, new species, are described. The new species are illustrated, diagnostic characters to separate them from previously described species are discussed, and a key to sulcate Dichelonyx species from southern California and Baja California is presented

    Primary familial congenital erythrocytosis: two novel EPOR mutations found in Spain

    Two-carbon ring expansions of vinyl β-lactones, were carried out by Lewis acids (BF3-Et2O or Et2AlCl) via an ionization/cation rearrangement. β,γ-unsaturated δ-lactones were produced as efficient protocols for the synthesis of bioactive substances. Vinyl β-lactones were prepared via ring closure of corresponding unsaturated β-hydroxy acids. Differently structured substrates were examined to study the influence of the substituents on the rearrangement. Other factors, such as temperature, solvent and catalyst were also studied in search of suitable reaction conditions. This method is moderately successful in providing fused-ring δ-lactones, but higher yields (so far total yield of 24.8%) and a better method for the separation of β- and δ-lactones are required for useful synthetic applications. The successful implementation of this conceptually novel strategy will provide a versatile and expedient route for the synthesis of δ-lactones bearing a wide range of substitution patterns

    Leveraging Energy Efficiency to Software Users

    The Focus of the GREENS workshop is the engineering of green and sustainable software. Our goal is to bring together academics and practitioners to discuss research initiatives, challenges, ideas, and results in this critically important area of the software industry. This second edition of the workshop was held at ICSE 2013 in San Francisco, CA, USA. The theme of GREENS 2013 is Leveraging "Energy Efficiency to Software Users." It featured a keynote talk, ten research papers and three breakout sessions that discussed topics that ranged from qualities vs. energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, to green models and views for (software) products/process and to stakeholders, relevant metrics and measurements. In this report, we present the themes of the workshop, and summarize the results of the discussions held in the breakout sessions, as well as the identified research challenges for future investigation.</jats:p
