Predicted Abundances of Carbon Compounds in Volcanic Gases on Io
We use chemical equilibrium calculations to model the speciation of carbon in
volcanic gases on Io. The calculations cover wide temperature (500-2000 K),
pressure (10^-8 to 10^+2 bars), and composition ranges (bulk O/S atomic ratios
\~0 to 3), which overlap the nominal conditions at Pele (1760 K, 0.01 bar, O/S
~ 1.5). Bulk C/S atomic ratios ranging from 10^-6 to 10^-1 in volcanic gases
are used with a nominal value of 10^-3 based upon upper limits from Voyager for
carbon in the Loki plume on Io. Carbon monoxide and CO2 are the two major
carbon gases under all conditions studied. Carbonyl sulfide and CS2 are orders
of magnitude less abundant. Consideration of different loss processes
(photolysis, condensation, kinetic reactions in the plume) indicates that
photolysis is probably the major loss process for all gases. Both CO and CO2
should be observable in volcanic plumes and in Io's atmosphere at abundances of

Relation among concentrations of incorporated Mn atoms, ionized Mn acceptors, and holes in p-(Ga,Mn)As epilayers
The amount of ionized Mn acceptors in various p-type Mn-doped GaAs epilayers
has been evaluated by electrochemical capacitance-voltage measurements, and has
been compared systematically with concentrations of incorporated Mn atoms and
holes for wide range of Mn concentration (10^17 ~ 10^21 cm^-3). Quantitative
assessment of anomalous Hall effect at room temperature is also carried out for

Modus Vivendi Beyond the Social Contract: Peace, Justice, and Survival in Realist Political Theory
This essay examines the promise of the notion of modus vivendi for realist political theory. I interpret recent theories of modus vivendi as affirming the priority of peace over justice, and explore several ways of making sense of this idea. I proceed to identify two key problems for modus vivendi theory, so conceived. Normatively speaking, it remains unclear how this approach can sustain a realist critique of Rawlsian theorizing about justice while avoiding a Hobbesian endorsement of absolutism. And conceptually, the theory remains wedded to a key feature of social contract theory: political order is conceived as based on agreement. This construes the horizontal tensions among individual or group agents in society as prior to the vertical, authoritative relations between authorities and their subjects. Political authority thereby appears from the start as a solution to societal conflict, rather than a problem in itself. I argue that this way of framing the issue abstracts from political experience. Instead I attempt to rethink the notion of modus vivendi from within the lived experience of political conflict, as oriented not primarily toward peace, but political survival. With this shift of perspective, the idea of modus vivendi shows us, pace Bernard Williams, that the âfirst political questionâ is not how to achieve order and stability, but rather: what can I live with

Development of portable NMR polarimeter system for polarized HD target
A portable NMR polarimeter system has been developed to measure the
polarization of a polarized Hydrogen-Deuteride (HD) target for hadron
photoproduction experiments at SPring-8. The polarized HD target is produced at
the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka university and is
transported to SPring-8. The HD polarization should be monitored at both
places. We have constructed the portable NMR polarimeter system by replacing
the devices in the conventional system with the software system with PCI
eXtensions for Instrumentation (PXI). The weight of the NMR system is downsized
from 80 kg to 7 kg, and the cost is reduced to 25%. We check the performance of
the portable NMR polarimeter system. The signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the NMR
signal for the portable system is about 50% of that for the conventional NMR
system. This performance of the portable NMR system is proved to be compatible

Precise pattern of recombination in serotonergic and hypothalamic neurons in a Pdx1-cre transgenic mouse line
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Multicellular organisms are characterized by a remarkable diversity of morphologically distinct and functionally specialized cell types. Transgenic techniques for the manipulation of gene expression in specific cellular populations are highly useful for elucidating the development and function of these cellular populations. Given notable similarities in developmental gene expression between pancreatic ÎČ-cells and serotonergic neurons, we examined the pattern of Cre-mediated recombination in the nervous system of a widely used mouse line, Pdx1-cre (formal designation, Tg(Ipf1-cre)89.1Dam), in which the expression of Cre recombinase is driven by regulatory elements upstream of the <it>pdx1 </it>(pancreatic-duodenal homeobox 1) gene.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Single (hemizygous) transgenic mice of the <it>pdx1-cre</it><sup>Cre/0 </sup>genotype were bred to single (hemizygous) transgenic reporter mice (Z/EG and rosa26R lines). Recombination pattern was examined in offspring using whole-mount and sectioned histological preparations at e9.5, e10.5, e11.5, e16.5 and adult developmental stages.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In addition to the previously reported pancreatic recombination, recombination in the developing nervous system and inner ear formation was observed. In the central nervous system, we observed a highly specific pattern of recombination in neuronal progenitors in the ventral brainstem and diencephalon. In the rostral brainstem (r1-r2), recombination occurred in newborn serotonergic neurons. In the caudal brainstem, recombination occurred in non-serotonergic cells. In the adult, this resulted in reporter expression in the vast majority of forebrain-projecting serotonergic neurons (located in the dorsal and median raphe nuclei) but in none of the spinal cord-projecting serotonergic neurons of the caudal raphe nuclei. In the adult caudal brainstem, reporter expression was widespread in the inferior olive nucleus. In the adult hypothalamus, recombination was observed in the arcuate nucleus and dorsomedial hypothalamus. Recombination was not observed in any other region of the central nervous system. Neuronal expression of endogenous <it>pdx1 </it>was not observed.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The Pdx1-cre mouse line, and the regulatory elements contained in the corresponding transgene, could be a valuable tool for targeted genetic manipulation of developing forebrain-projecting serotonergic neurons and several other unique neuronal sub-populations. These results suggest that investigators employing this mouse line for studies of pancreatic function should consider the possible contributions of central nervous system effects towards resulting phenotypes.</p
Differentiable VQ-VAE's for Robust White Matter Streamline Encodings
Given the complex geometry of white matter streamlines, Autoencoders have
been proposed as a dimension-reduction tool to simplify the analysis
streamlines in a low-dimensional latent spaces. However, despite these recent
successes, the majority of encoder architectures only perform dimension
reduction on single streamlines as opposed to a full bundle of streamlines.
This is a severe limitation of the encoder architecture that completely
disregards the global geometric structure of streamlines at the expense of
individual fibers. Moreover, the latent space may not be well structured which
leads to doubt into their interpretability. In this paper we propose a novel
Differentiable Vector Quantized Variational Autoencoder, which are engineered
to ingest entire bundles of streamlines as single data-point and provides
reliable trustworthy encodings that can then be later used to analyze
streamlines in the latent space. Comparisons with several state of the art
