Costs of Reducing Nutrient Losses in Denmark - Analyses of Different Regulation Systems and Cost Effective Measures

    Get PDF
The economic calculations carried out prior to the Plan for the Aquatic Environment III included a comparison of regulation systems aimed at reducing nitrogen leaching, analyses of measures for reducing phosphorus losses and estimation of administrative costs. The conclusions were that taxation of the N-surplus introduced at the sector level was the most cost effective regulation when compared with administrative regulation and set a side. For phosphorus a balance between incoming and outgoing phosphorus is very costly as this requires that much slurry is transported from the western to the eastern part of Denmark. The final plan for the Aquatic Environment III from 2004 included a 13% reduction of N-leaching until 2015 based on cost effective administrative measures like wetlands and catch crops. Also a tax on mineral phosphorus in feedstuffs was included in order to half the phosphorus surplus. The measures in the Plan will have to be supplemented by more measures to meet the targets in the EU's Water Framework Directive.cost-effectiveness, cost of reducing nitrogen leaching, phosphorus, administrative costs, Agricultural and Food Policy, Q51, Q52, Q53,

In the operator theoretic renormalization analysis introduced by Bach, Froehlich, and Sigal we prove uniqueness of the ground state.Comment: 10 page

Peer Reviewe

Ground States in the Spin Boson Model

We prove that the Hamiltonian of the model describing a spin which is linearly coupled to a field of relativistic and massless bosons, also known as the spin-boson model, admits a ground state for small values of the coupling constant lambda. We show that the ground state energy is an analytic function of lambda and that the corresponding ground state can also be chosen to be an analytic function of lambda. No infrared regularization is imposed. Our proof is based on a modified version of the BFS operator theoretic renormalization analysis. Moreover, using a positivity argument we prove that the ground state of the spin-boson model is unique. We show that the expansion coefficients of the ground state and the ground state energy can be calculated using regular analytic perturbation theory

Ultrastructure of grape leaf protoplasts in comparison with the source tissue

Based on their histochemical properties, protoplasts from grape leaf mesophyll were found to be viable and devoid of remnants of the cell wall. The results were confirmed by electron microscopy of sectioned and freeze-etched protoplast preparations. The only remarkable difference between cells in the intact tissue and the protoplasts was the occurrence of electron-dense globules in the cytoplasm of some individuals. These "osmiophilic bodies" are believed to be due to inevitable plasmolytic effects during wall removal and seem not to have any influence on protoplast CO2-assimilation, as has been demonstrated earlier. lt therefore appears that the vital structures remain intact and functional, in spite of the stress situation created by the isolation procedure.

Ultrasonic Tracking of Migratory Fishes with an Internal Tag

First paragraph: A small ultrasonic tag, 9 mm by 40 mm in size, has been developed by members of the fish orientation group at the University of Wisconsin. The tag emits a continuous signal at approximately 65 kc/sec. The signal is received via a directional hydrophone and a high quality communications receiver. Tracking ranges of up to 1 km have been obtained. The placement of the tag is internal: either into the stomach or into the body cavity of the fish. The tags and tracking equipment have been successfully employed in studies on the open water movements and orientation of white bass during their spawning migration

Influence of bainite morphology on impact toughness of continuously cooled cementite free bainitic steels

    Get PDF
The influence of bainite morphology on the impact toughness behaviour of continuously cooled cementite-free low carbon bainitic steels has been examined. In these steels, bainitic microstructures formed mainly by lath-like upper bainite, consisting of thin and long parallel ferrite laths, were shown to exhibit higher impact toughness values than those with a granular bainite, consisting of equiaxed ferrite structure and discrete island of marteniste/austenite (M/A) constituent. Results suggest that the mechanism of brittle fracture of cementite-free bainitic steels involves nucleation of microcracks in M/A islands but is controlled by the bainite packet sizeSpanish Ministry of Science and Innovation for financial support in the form of a PhD research grant (FPI grant under the project no. Results of an Indo-Swiss programme for qualification and testing of a 300-kW IISc-Dasag gasifier

The paper describes the performance and operational experience in India on a high efficiency, low tar, woody biomass gasifier developed at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. This development is also of interest to Switzerland, which has a substantial potential of biomass energy. The test scheme included measurements on tar and particulates and the effluents along with necessary measurements for the mass and energy balance. The results indicate a low tar level to meet the engine specifications and the effluents issuing out of the system could be treated using simpler techniques, as the levels are low
