The physiological action of cystinyl peptides and guanidine derivatives

    Get PDF
A number of peptides consisting of cystine in combination with other amino acids found in insulin were prepared in the hope of finding a grouping which would show the hypoglucemic action of insulin; The compounds prepared were: dicarbethoxytyrosylcystine diethylester, dicarbethoxycystinyltyrosine ethylester, dicarbethoxycystinyltyrosine, dicarbethoxycystinylhistidine methylester and dicarbethoxycystinylarginine; The physiological tests of these compounds have not been completed

The random hierarchy consists of each node in the network independently choosing a rank at random such that a mean 2(\Delta-1)\Delta^{i-1} nodes have rank i, where \Delta is a network wide hierarchy parameter. Each node of rank i chooses the nearest node of rank i-1 as its leader which forms the hierarchy. The mean and variance of the relevant properties is derived, for example it is shown that each leader has a mean \Delta followers. Simulations were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hierarchy and a "bare-bones" set of procedures where provided that may be used to implement the hierarchy over a network of autonomous nodes in a robust way.Aaron Harwood, Hong She

We define the virtual flow topology and provide a stochastic algorithm, GFLOW, that generates labels for virtual connections using periodic broadcasts providing simple and efficient robustness and oblivious execution. For a random network with N nodes of average degree đ and dimeter (-)(k), we demonstrate how our algorithm can be used to generate a mean l = 1+ (k-1) d labels at each node to provide a probability (-) 1/N that any pair of nodes will have a virtual connection between them. We show that with probability roughly 1/2 + l/2N any node may route a message along a virtual connection which terminates within an e-neighborhood of the destination, where (-)= (log _ d (N/k )) with l as stipulated. Of course the number of labels generated at each node is variable and directly relates to the cost in such a way that a network administrator can trade label space for increased performance. We provide simulation results using Matlab mathematical language interpreter that supports our analysis.Aaron Harwood, Hong She

Falls prevention interventions in older adults with cognitive impairment: a systematic review of reviews

    Get PDF
Aim: This critical review explores the review material on falls prevention interventions in older adults with a cognitive impairment such as dementia. Method: A critical, systematic, review of review method was used. Five large electronic databases, MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, and the Cochrane electronic library, were searched. The search terms ‘falls’, ‘rehabilitation’, ‘falls prevention’, ‘interventions’, ‘cognitive impairment’, ‘dementia’, and ‘Alzheimer’s disease’, were used. All available reviews were marked against predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: There were seven reviews which met the inclusion criteria. Only one of the included reviews had a homogenous population of adults with a cognitive impairment. Exercise was the most commonly reported intervention, included in 91 studies and all seven reviews. Multifactorial and multicomponent falls prevention programmes were also frequently reported. Reports of efficacy were inconsistent for all interventions. Conclusion: Evidence for falls prevention interventions for adults with cognitive impairment is varied and inconclusive. When compared to literature for falls interventions in healthy older adults, both primary and synthesis studies in older adults with cognitive impairment are lacking in quality, number and homogeneity of sample population and interventions. Promising results are emerging but clinical recommendations cannot be made at this time

Cross-check for completeness: exploring a novel use of Leximancer in a Grounded Theory study

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the potential for Leximancer software to actively support the Grounded Theory (GT) analyst in assessing the ‘completeness’ of their study. The case study takes an existing GT study and retrospectively analyzes the data with Leximancer. The Leximancer output showed encouraging similarities to the main themes emerging from the GT analysis; but not sufficiently at the selective coding level to justifiably claim a definitive cross-check for overall theoretical saturation. Whilst Leximancer is not found to be a substitute for the ‘hard labor’ of GT coding and theory development, it can provide a very useful, efficient and relatively impartial cross-check of completeness/saturation in the open (and possibly axial) coding stage(s) of a GT study. This automated post-analysis check of GT coding is a novel use of a CAQDAS package.<br/

Managing Risk in Farming: Concepts, Research, and Analysis

    Get PDF
The risks confronted by grain and cotton farmers are of particular interest, given the changing role of the Government after passage of the 1996 Farm Act. With the shift toward less government intervention in the post-1996 Farm Act environment, a more sophisticated understanding of risk and risk management is important to help producers make better decisions in risky situations and to assist policymakers in assessing the effectiveness of different types of risk protection tools. In response, this report provides a rigorous, yet accessible, description of risk and risk management tools and strategies at the farm level. It also provides never-before-published data on farmers' assessments of the risks they face, their use of alternative risk management strategies, and the changes they would make if faced with financial difficulty. It also compares price risk across crops and time periods, and provides detailed information on yield variability.crop insurance, diversification, futures contracts, leasing, leveraging, liquidity, livestock insurance, marketing contracts, options contracts, production contracts, revenue insurance, risk, vertical integration, Farm Management, Risk and Uncertainty,
