    Monitoring habits and physiological data in the frail elderly

    There is a need for new models of care enabled by technology to support long-term and independent living of the elderly. Integrating telecare and telehealth technologies can be used to provide innovative support in an unobtrusive way. inCASA is a European Commission funded project that uses an integrated platform to monitor both health and habits data in the frail elderly and demonstrate the concept of integrated health and social services through pilot trials. This paper presents the joint analysis of habits and clinical data from the UK pilot. The aim of the analysis is to determine the correlation between change in habits behaviour, change in physiological data and deterioration in the condition of the patient

    Evaluation of social personalized adaptive E-Learning environments : end-user point of view

    The use of adaptations, along with the social aïŹ€ordances of collaboration and networking, carries a great potential for improving e-learning experiences. However, the review of the previous work indicates current e-learning systems have only marginally explored the integration of social features and adaptation techniques. The overall aim of this research, therefore, is to address this gap by evaluating a system developed to foster social personalized adaptive e-learning experiences. We have developed our ïŹrst prototype system, Topolor, based on the concepts of Adaptive Educational Hypermedia and Social E-Learning. We have also conducted an experimental case study for the evaluation of the prototype system from diïŹ€erent perspectives. The results show a considerably high satisfaction of the end users. This paper reports the evaluation results from end user point of view, and generalizes our method to a component-based evaluation framework

    Medium- and large-scale characterization of UMTS-allocated frequency division duplex channels

    A dual-band sounder is used in both trolley and van measurements in the dense urban environment of Manchester city center to characterize the uplink (1920-1980 MHz) and downlink (2110-2170 MHz) frequency-division duplex (FDD) channels allocated to third-generation (3G) mobile radio systems. The data are analyzed with 60- and 5-MHz resolutions, as used for 3G wideband code-division multiple-access systems. Root-mean-square (rms) delay spread and 15-dB widths of mainly temporally averaged delay profile are presented either as cumulative distribution functions (cdfs) for each individual frequency band or as histograms of the difference between uplink and downlink on a local area basis. It was found that the histograms show larger differences between the two bands than the individual cdf and that the differences between the FDD channels are more pronounced on circumferential routes and shadowed locations. Correlations of rms delay spread with excess path loss and distance are on the order of 0.5 and 0.4, respectively

    Spinodal Instabilities in Nuclear Matter in a Stochastic Relativistic Mean-Field Approach

    Spinodal instabilities and early growth of baryon density fluctuations in symmetric nuclear matter are investigated in the basis of stochastic extension of relativistic mean-field approach in the semi-classical approximation. Calculations are compared with the results of non-relativistic calculations based on Skyrme-type effective interactions under similar conditions. A qualitative difference appears in the unstable response of the system: the system exhibits most unstable behavior at higher baryon densities around ρb=0.4 ρ0\rho_{b}=0.4 ~\rho_{0} in the relativistic approach while most unstable behavior occurs at lower baryon densities around ρb=0.2 ρ0\rho_{b}=0.2 ~\rho_{0} in the non-relativistic calculationsComment: 18 pages, 7 figure

    Higher meson resonances in ρ→π0π0Îł\rho \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma and ω→π0π0Îł\omega \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma

    The role of higher meson resonances with spin 1 and 2 is investigated quantitatively in the decay processes of ρ→π0π0Îł\rho \to \pi^0\pi^0 \gamma and ω→π0π0Îł\omega \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma. Among the higher resonances, we find that the f2(1270)f_2(1270) tensor meson can give a nontrivial contribution especially to the ω→π0π0Îł\omega \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma decay process. When the f2f_2 contribution is combined with the processes involving the vector and scalar meson intermediate states, a good agreement with the recent measurements is achieved for both decays. The effect of the f2(1270)f_2(1270) is found to be sizable at the intermediate photon energies and may be verified by precise measurements of the recoil photon spectrum of the ω→π0π0Îł\omega \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma decay. The dependence of the decay widths on various models for the ρ\rho-ω\omega mixing in the literature is also investigated.Comment: 16 pages, REVTeX, 6 figures, revised version, to appear in Phys.     K–partitioning of Signed or Weighted Bipartite Graphs

    Abstract — In this work, K-partitioning of signed or weighted bipartite graph problem has been introduced, which appears as a real life problem where the partitions of bipartite graph represent two different entities and the edges between the nodes of the partitions represent the relationships among them. A typical example is the set of people and their opinions, whose strength is represented as signed numerical values. Using the weights on the edges, these bipartite graphs can be partitioned into two or more clusters. In political domain, a cluster represents strong relationship among a group of people and a group of issues. In the paper, we formally define the problem and compare different heuristics, and show through both real and simulated data the effectiveness of our approaches

    Effects of an acute bout of dynamic stretching on biomechanical properties of the gastrocnemius muscle determined by shear wave elastography

    Aims The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects of dynamic stretching (DS) exercise on passive ankle range of motion (RoM), resting localized muscle stiffness, as measured by shear wave speed (SWS) of medial gastrocnemius muscle, fascicle strain, and thickness. Methods/Results Twenty-three participants performed a DS protocol. Before and after stretching, SWS was measured in the belly of the resting medial gastrocnemius muscle (MGM) using shear wave elastography. DS produced small improvements in maximum dorsiflexion (+1.5 ±1.5; mean difference ±90% confidence limits) and maximum plantarflexion (+2.3 ±1.8), a small decrease in fascicle strain (-2.6% ±4.4) and a small increase in SWS at neutral resting angle (+11.4% ±1.5). There was also a small increase in muscle thickness (+4.1mm ±2.0). Conclusions Through the use of elastography, this is the first study to suggest that DS increases muscle stiffness, decreases fascicle strain and increases muscle thickness as a result of improved RoM. These results can be beneficial to coaches, exercise and clinical scientists when choosing DS as a muscle conditioning or rehabilitation intervention
