    Blackwell-Optimal Strategies in Priority Mean-Payoff Games

    We examine perfect information stochastic mean-payoff games - a class of games containing as special sub-classes the usual mean-payoff games and parity games. We show that deterministic memoryless strategies that are optimal for discounted games with state-dependent discount factors close to 1 are optimal for priority mean-payoff games establishing a strong link between these two classes

    A simple prescription for simulating and characterizing gravitational arcs

    Simple models of gravitational arcs are crucial to simulate large samples of these objects with full control of the input parameters. These models also provide crude and automated estimates of the shape and structure of the arcs, which are necessary when trying to detect and characterize these objects on massive wide area imaging surveys. We here present and explore the ArcEllipse, a simple prescription to create objects with shape similar to gravitational arcs. We also present PaintArcs, which is a code that couples this geometrical form with a brightness distribution and adds the resulting object to images. Finally, we introduce ArcFitting, which is a tool that fits ArcEllipses to images of real gravitational arcs. We validate this fitting technique using simulated arcs and apply it to CFHTLS and HST images of tangential arcs around clusters of galaxies. Our simple ArcEllipse model for the arc, associated to a S\'ersic profile for the source, recovers the total signal in real images typically within 10%-30%. The ArcEllipse+S\'ersic models also automatically recover visual estimates of length-to-width ratios of real arcs. Residual maps between data and model images reveal the incidence of arc substructure. They may thus be used as a diagnostic for arcs formed by the merging of multiple images. The incidence of these substructures is the main factor preventing ArcEllipse models from accurately describing real lensed systems.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Este trabalho trata do desmatamento na Amazônia brasileira com ênfase no custo social imposto à nação pela redução e perda da base florestal, em especial da castanha, um dos principais produtos não madeireiros da floresta, no período de 1998 a 2008. Para medir os custos sociais do desmatamento que recaem sobre os produtores e consumidores de castanha-do-brasil, utilizou-se o conceito de excedente econômico de Marshall. O custo social médio anual estimado foi da ordem de 11,6 milhões de reais, recaindo, em média, 63 % desses custos sobre os produtores e 37 % sobre os consumidores. Portanto, todos perdem com os danos causados à base florestal e ao ecossistema da floresta tropical

    A Transgenic Rat for Investigating the Anatomy and Function of Corticotrophin Releasing Factor Circuits.

    Corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) is a 41 amino acid neuropeptide that coordinates adaptive responses to stress. CRF projections from neurons in the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) to the brainstem are of particular interest for their role in motivated behavior. To directly examine the anatomy and function of CRF neurons, we generated a BAC transgenic Crh-Cre rat in which bacterial Cre recombinase is expressed from the Crh promoter. Using Cre-dependent reporters, we found that Cre expressing neurons in these rats are immunoreactive for CRF and are clustered in the lateral CeA (CeL) and the oval nucleus of the BNST. We detected major projections from CeA CRF neurons to parabrachial nuclei and the locus coeruleus, dorsal and ventral BNST, and more minor projections to lateral portions of the substantia nigra, ventral tegmental area, and lateral hypothalamus. Optogenetic stimulation of CeA CRF neurons evoked GABA-ergic responses in 11% of non-CRF neurons in the medial CeA (CeM) and 44% of non-CRF neurons in the CeL. Chemogenetic stimulation of CeA CRF neurons induced Fos in a similar proportion of non-CRF CeM neurons but a smaller proportion of non-CRF CeL neurons. The CRF1 receptor antagonist R121919 reduced this Fos induction by two-thirds in these regions. These results indicate that CeL CRF neurons provide both local inhibitory GABA and excitatory CRF signals to other CeA neurons, and demonstrate the value of the Crh-Cre rat as a tool for studying circuit function and physiology of CRF neurons

    Recoherence in the entanglement dynamics and classical orbits in the N-atom Jaynes-Cummings model

    The rise in linear entropy of a subsystem in the N-atom Jaynes-Cummings model is shown to be strongly influenced by the shape of the classical orbits of the underlying classical phase space: we find a one-to-one correspondence between maxima (minima) of the linear entropy and maxima (minima) of the expectation value of atomic excitation J_z. Since the expectation value of this operator can be viewed as related to the orbit radius in the classical phase space projection associated to the atomic degree of freedom, the proximity of the quantum wave packet to this atomic phase space borderline produces a maximum rate of entanglement. The consequence of this fact for initial conditions centered at periodic orbits in regular regions is a clear periodic recoherence. For chaotic situations the same phenomenon (proximity of the atomic phase space borderline) is in general responsible for oscillations in the entanglement properties.Comment: 15 pages (text), 6 figures; to be published in Physical Review

    Este trabalho estudou a depredação do pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) no Bioma Cerrado com ênfase na valoração do custo social imposto à sociedade pela redução e perda da base florestal no período de 1990 a 2008. Para medir os custos sociais da depredação, utilizou-se o conceito de excedente econômico de Marshall. No período de 1990 a 2008, o custo social médio estimado foi da ordem de R$ 922 mil. Em média, 44% do custo social estimado recai sobre os consumidores e 56% sobre os produtores. Portanto, todos perdem com os danos causados à base florestal e ao ecossistema do Bioma Cerrado

    A crystal/melt partitioning study for sulfur and halogens: pyroxenes as probes for assessing gas loads in LIP magmas

    A link between magmatism from Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and mass extinctions has been observed at leastin five occasions in the Phanerozoic. Volatile species such as S, C and halogen compounds severely impactedthe global environment, released both from melts and thermal metamorphism of volatile-rich sediments. It is stillchallenging to obtain quantitative estimates of the degassed volatiles for ancient magmatic systems, particularly inthe absence of melt inclusions. We propose to fill the gap of knowledge on sulfur partitioning between mineralsand melts, at the aim of using phenocrysts as probes of volatile contents in the melts from which they crystallized.Measuring a volatile concentration in natural minerals (chiefly clinopyroxene) and combining it with an experi-mentally determined partition coefficient (KD), the volatile load in basaltic equilibrium melts can be calculated.We measured a clinopyroxene/melt sulfur KD of 0.0009\ub10.0001 for basaltic experiments performed at conditionstypical of LIP basalts (FMQ-2; 800-1000 MPa; 1000 \u30a-1350 \u30aC), through ion microprobe (Nordsim). Basaltic ex-periments were also simultaneously analyzed for Cl and F. For these elements the measured clinopyroxene/meltKDs were more variable, 0.0071\ub10.0052 and 0.1985\ub10.087, respectively. Compatibility of sulfur, chlorine andfluorine in clinopyroxene from basaltic systems is markedly different (F>Cl>S), in agreement with what observedby previous studies, and the partition coefficient is well constrained around 0.001 for S. Application of the newlymeasured sulfur KD to samples from thoroughly-dated lava piles from the Deccan Traps and from the SiberianTraps sills reveal that most of the basalts were at or near sulfide saturation (up to ca. 2000 ppm for low fO2melts)
