Investigating the noise residuals around the gravitational wave event GW150914
We use the Pearson cross-correlation statistic proposed by Liu and Jackson,
and employed by Creswell et al., to look for statistically significant
correlations between the LIGO Hanford and Livingston detectors at the time of
the binary black hole merger GW150914. We compute this statistic for the
calibrated strain data released by LIGO, using both the residuals provided by
LIGO and using our own subtraction of a maximum-likelihood waveform that is
constructed to model binary black hole mergers in general relativity. To assign
a significance to the values obtained, we calculate the cross-correlation of
both simulated Gaussian noise and data from the LIGO detectors at times during
which no detection of gravitational waves has been claimed. We find that after
subtracting the maximum likelihood waveform there are no statistically
significant correlations between the residuals of the two detectors at the time

The eyes of suckermouth armoured catfish (Loricariidae, subfamily Hypostomus): pupil response, lenticular longitudinal spherical aberration and retinal topography
The dilated, round pupils of a species of suckermouth armoured catfish (Liposarcus pardalis) constrict slowly on illumination (over 35-40 min) to form crescent-shaped apertures. Ray tracing of He-Ne laser beams shows that the lenses of a related species (Pterygoplichthys etentaculus), which also has a crescent-shaped pupil, are well corrected for longitudinal spherical aberration, suggesting that the primary purpose of the irregular pupil in armoured catfish is not to correct such aberration. It is suggested that the iris operculum may serve to camouflage the pupil of these substrate-dwelling species. An examination of the catfish retina shows the photoreceptors to be exclusively single cones interspersed with elongate rods and demonstrates the presence of multiple optic nerve head papillae. Two areas of high ganglion cell density, each side of a vertically oriented falciform process, provide increased spatial resolving power along the axes examining the substrate in front of and behind the animal
Na atomic order, Co charge disproportionation and magnetism in NaCoO for large Na contents
We have synthesized and characterized four different stable phases of Na
ordered NaCoO, for . Above 100 K they display similar
Curie-Weiss susceptibilities as well as ferromagnetic spin fluctuations
in the CoO planes revealed by Na NMR data. In all phases from
Co NMR data we display evidences that the Co disproportionate already
above 300 K into non magnetic Co and magnetic Co
sites on which holes delocalize. This allows us to understand that metallic
magnetism is favored for these large Na contents. Below 100 K the phases
differentiate, and a magnetic order sets in only for at
22 K. We suggest that the charge order also governs the low energy
scales and transverse couplings
Coaxial prime focus feeds for paraboloidal reflectors
A TE11 - TM11 dual mode coaxial feed for use in prime focus paraboloidal antenna systems is investigated. The scattering matrix parameters of the internal bifurcation junction was determined by the residue calculus technique. The scattering parameters and radiation fields of the aperture were found from the Weinstein solution. The optimum modeing ratio for minimum cross-polarization was determined along with the corresponding optimum feed dimensions. A peak cross-polarization level of -58 dB is predicted. The frequency characteristics were also investigated and a bandwidth of 5% is predicted over which the cross-polarization remains below -30 dB, the input VSWR is below 1.15, and the phase error is less than 10 deg. Theoretical radiation patterns and efficiency curves for a paraboloidal reflector illuminated by this feed were computed. The predicted sidelobe level is below -30 dB and aperture efficiencies greater than 70% are possible. Experimental results are also presented that substantiates the theoretical results. In addition, experimental results for a 'short-cup' coaxial feed are given. The report includes extensive design data for the dual-mode feed along with performance curves showing cross-polarization as a function of feed parameters. The feed is useful for low-cost ground based receiving antennas for use in direct television satellite broadcasting service
Center of mass rotation and vortices in an attractive Bose gas
The rotational properties of an attractively interacting Bose gas are studied
using analytical and numerical methods. We study perturbatively the ground
state phase space for weak interactions, and find that in an anharmonic trap
the rotational ground states are vortex or center of mass rotational states;
the crossover line separating these two phases is calculated. We further show
that the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is a valid description of such a gas in the
rotating frame and calculate numerically the phase space structure using this
equation. It is found that the transition between vortex and center of mass
rotation is gradual; furthermore the perturbative approach is valid only in an
exceedingly small portion of phase space. We also present an intuitive picture
of the physics involved in terms of correlated successive measurements for the
