    Relapsing sepsis episodes of Escherichia coli with CTX-M ESBL or derepressed ampC genes in a patient with chronic autoimmune pancreatitis complicated by IgG4 hypergammaglobulinaemia

    Bloodstream recurrent infections have been reported for a variety of opportunistic bacteria. These are often either catheter related or are caused by indwelling devices. A case of relapsing sepsis with two Escherichia coli strains carrying extended-spectrum ÎČ-lactamase and derepressed ampC genes is reported. The patient had seven episodes of bloodstream infections within 1 year and was diagnosed with chronic autoimmune pancreatitis and IgG4 hypergammaglobulinaemia. Abscesses were found in his spleen and pancreas cauda, which was finally resected. Relapses of bacteraemia with resistant enterobacteria should be considered during perioperative protection. Surgical removal of the infective focus could be curative.Peer reviewe

    K -shell diagram and hypersatellite spectra of 4d transition elements

    The K-shell diagram (K alpha(1,2) and K beta(1,3)) and hypersatellite (HS) (K-h alpha(1,2)) spectra of Y, Zr, Mo, and Pd have been measured with high energy-resolution using photoexcitation by 90 keV synchrotron radiation. Comparison of the measured and ab initio calculated HS spectra demonstrates the importance of quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects for the HS spectra. Phenomenological fits of the measured spectra by Voigt functions yield accurate values for the shift of the HS from the diagram lines, the splitting of the HS lines, and their intensity ratio. Good agreement with theory was found for all quantities except for the intensity ratio, which is dominated by the intermediacy of the coupling of the angular momenta.     X-ray Raman scattering study of aligned polyfluorene

    We present a non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the carbon K-edge on aligned poly[9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-fluorene-2,7-diyl] and show that the x-ray Raman scattering technique can be used as a practical alternative to x-ray absorption measurements. We demonstrate that this novel method can be applied to studies on aligned π\pi-conjugated polymers complementing diffraction and optical studies. Combining the experimental data and a very recently proposed theoretical scheme we demonstrate a unique property of x-ray Raman scattering by performing the symmetry decomposition on the density of unoccupied electronic states into ss- and pp-type symmetry contributions.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure

    We provide an overview of the state-of-the-art for mathematical methods that are used to reconstruct brain activity from neurophysiological data. After a brief introduction on the mathematics of the forward problem, we discuss standard and recently proposed regularization methods, as well as Monte Carlo techniques for Bayesian inference. We classify the inverse methods based on the underlying source model, and discuss advantages and disadvantages.     Sibilant consonants classification with deep neural networks

    Abstract. Many children su ering from speech sound disorders cannot pronounce the sibilant consonants correctly. We have developed a serious game that is controlled by the children's voices in real time and that allows children to practice the European Portuguese sibilant consonants. For this, the game uses a sibilant consonant classi er. Since the game does not require any type of adult supervision, children can practice the production of these sounds more often, which may lead to faster improvements of their speech. Recently, the use of deep neural networks has given considerable improvements in classi cation for a variety of use cases, from image classication to speech and language processing. Here we propose to use deep convolutional neural networks to classify sibilant phonemes of European Portuguese in our serious game for speech and language therapy. We compared the performance of several diferent arti cial neural networks that used Mel frequency cepstral coefcients or log Mel lterbanks.     Boron Nitride Monolayer: A Strain-Tunable Nanosensor

    The influence of triaxial in-plane strain on the electronic properties of a hexagonal boron-nitride sheet is investigated using density functional theory. Different from graphene, the triaxial strain localizes the molecular orbitals of the boron-nitride flake in its center depending on the direction of the applied strain. The proposed technique for localizing the molecular orbitals that are close to the Fermi level in the center of boron nitride flakes can be used to actualize engineered nanosensors, for instance, to selectively detect gas molecules. We show that the central part of the strained flake adsorbs polar molecules more strongly as compared with an unstrained sheet.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figure

    Pyrazine-Fused Triterpenoids Block the TRPA1 Ion Channel in Vitro and Inhibit TRPA1-Mediated Acute Inflammation in Vivo

    TRPA1 is a nonselective cation channel, most famously expressed in nonmyelinated nociceptors. In addition to being an important chemical and mechanical pain sensor, TRPA1 has more recently appeared to have a role also in inflammation. Triterpenoids are natural products with anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects in experimental models. In this paper, 13 novel triterpenoids were created by synthetically modifying betulin, an abundant triterpenoid of the genus Betula L., and their TRPA1-modulating properties were examined. The Fluo 3-AM protocol was used in the initial screening, in which six of the 14 tested triterpenoids inhibited TRPA1 in a statistically significant manner. In subsequent whole-cell patch clamp recordings, the two most effective compounds (pyrazine-fused triterpenoids 8 and 9) displayed a reversible and dose- and voltage-dependent effect to block the TRPA1 ion channel at submicromolar concentrations. Interestingly, the TRPA1 blocking action was also evident in vivo, as compounds 8 and 9 both alleviated TRPA1 agonist-induced acute paw inflammation in mice. The results introduce betulin-derived pyrazine-fused triterpenoids as promising novel antagonists of TRPA1 that are potentially useful in treating diseases with a TRPA1-mediated adverse component
