Household item ownership and self-rated health: material and psychosocial explanations
Background: There has been an ongoing debate whether the effects of socioeconomic factors on health are due to absolute poverty and material factors or to relative deprivation and psychosocial factors. In the present analyses, we examined the importance for health of material factors, which may have a direct effect on health, and of those that may affect health indirectly, through psychosocial mechanisms. Methods: Random national samples of men and women in Hungary (n=973) and Poland (n=1141) were interviewed (response rates 58% and 59%, respectively). The subjects reported their self-rated health, socioeconomic circumstances, including ownership of different household items, and perceived control over life. Household items were categorised as "basic needs", "socially oriented", and "luxury". We examined the association between the ownership of different groups of items and self-rated health. Since the lists of household items were different in Hungary and Poland, we conducted parallel identical analyses of the Hungarian and Polish data. Results: The overall prevalence of poor or very poor health was 13% in Poland and 25% in Hungary. Education, material deprivation and the number of household items were all associated with poor health in bivariate analyses. All three groups of household items were positively related to self-rated health in age-adjusted analyses. The relation of basic needs items to poor health disappeared after controlling for other socioeconomic variables (mainly material deprivation). The relation of socially oriented and luxury items to poor health, however, persisted in multivariate models. The results were similar in both datasets. Conclusions: These data suggest that health is influenced by both material and psychosocial aspects of socioeconomic factors
One hundred angstrom niobium wire
Composite of fine niobium wires in copper is used to study the size and proximity effects of a superconductor in a normal matrix. The niobium rod was drawn to a 100 angstrom diameter wire on a copper tubing
Interpretation of x-ray-absorption dichroism experiments
A rule is derived to use x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra to extract the magnetic moment of the conduction-band states with j= l -1/2 separately from those with j= l + 1/2 as a function of energy. This quantity is straightforward to determine from the electronic band structure. The rule is illustrated with an application to pure iron and to the random substitutional alloy Fe_{80}CO_{20}
The limits of process: On (re)reading Henri Bergson
This article offers a reading of the work of Henri Bergson as it pertains to organizations through the lens of ideas drawn from critical realism. It suggests an alternative to interpretations based on a stark division between process and realist perspectives. Much of the existing literature presents a rather partial view of Bergson’s work. A review suggests some interesting parallels with themes in critical realism, notably the emergence of mind. Critical realism has a focus on process at its heart, but is also concerned with how the products of such processes become stabilized and form the conditions for action. This suggests that attention might usefully be paid to the relationship between organizational action and the sedimented practices grouped under the heading of ‘routines’. More attention to Bergson’s account of the relationship between instinct, intuition and intelligence provides a link to the social character of thought, something which can be mapped on to Archer’s work on reflexivity and the ‘internal conversation’. This suggests that our analyses need to pay attention to both memory and history, to building and dwelling, rather than the one-sided focus found in some process theory accounts
Collective multipole-like signatures of entanglement in symmetric N-qubit systems
A cogent theory of collective multipole-like quantum correlations in
symmetric multiqubit states is presented by employing SO(3) irreducible
spherical tensor representation. An arbitrary bipartite division of this system
leads to a family of inequalities to detect entanglement involving averages of
these tensors expressed in terms of the total system angular momentum operator.
Implications of this theory to the quantum nature of multipole-like
correlations of all orders in the Dicke states are deduced. A selected set of
examples illustrate these collective tests. Such tests detect entanglement in
macroscopic atomic ensembles, where individual atoms are not accessible.Comment: REVTEX, 4 pages with 1 figure; To appear in Phys. Rev.
Spin-to-Orbital Angular Momentum Conversion and Spin-Polarization Filtering in Electron Beams
We propose the design of a space-variant Wien filter for electron beams that
induces a spin half-turn and converts the corresponding spin angular momentum
variation into orbital angular momentum of the beam itself by exploiting a
geometrical phase arising in the spin manipulation. When applied to a spatially
coherent input spin-polarized electron beam, such a device can generate an
electron vortex beam, carrying orbital angular momentum. When applied to an
unpolarized input beam, the proposed device, in combination with a suitable
diffraction element, can act as a very effective spin-polarization filter. The
same approach can also be applied to neutron or atom beams.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Padronização de uma bateria para a avaliação de fatores de risco psicossociais trabalhistas em trabalhadores colombianos
A battery of questionnaires to assess psychosocial risk factors at work was developed in 2010 in response to Resolution 2646 created by the Colombian Ministry of Social Protection. However, this battery presents some theoretical and practical limitations. A new battery of instruments has been designed and validated that includes instruments and risk indicators of the demand-control-social support and the effort-reward imbalance models. Other factors, not included in these models, but that Resolution 2646 suggests should be assessed, have also been added, and with this additional information, the new battery allows us to also calculate a “global indicator” of demand, control, and social support; family and social risk conditions, coping and personality; and health and wellbeing. The new battery was administered to a sample of 16,095 workers from different occupations and representative Colombian regions. An analysis of the various domains indicates that internal consistency of the various scales is high. The new battery has the following properties: it is simple to use in paper format or when administered by computer, it enables comparison between occupations, it offers unified scores for each variable, and provides information to assess the risk factors suggested by Resolution 2646. In addition, it will make it possible to compare the results obtained when analyzing Colombian workers with those obtained from studies of workers from other countries.
