    Diseño de una red LoRa de bajo costo para el monitoreo del sector agrícola

    The purpose of the research is to help farmers with low-cost devices for real-time monitoring of crops to minimize losses due to adverse weather effects in areas of the Andean region of Ecuador. The design of the long-range network (LoRa) consists of end nodes, gateway and IoT platform thinger.io to create the graphical user interface to monitor and control the equipment remotely. One of the characteristics of Andean areas is the uneven terrain; the evaluated parameters are measured at 80m intervals, the network reached a distance of 805m of coverage. To evaluate the sensitivity of the signal, the final nodes were located in a 15m deep ravine where vegetation and trees were detrimental to the communication signal, registering received signal strength measurements RSSI of -126 dBm and signal to noise ratio SNR of -9.25 dB.El propósito de la investigación es ayudar a los agricultores que dispongan de dispositivos de bajo costo para el monitoreo en tiempo real de los cultivos para minimizar perdidas por efectos climáticos adversos en zonas de la región Andina del Ecuador. El diseño de la red de largo alcance (LoRa) está constituida por nodos finales, puerta de enlace y plataforma IoT thinger.io para crear la interfaz gráfica de usuario a fin de monitorear y controlar los equipos a distancia. Una de las características de zonas andinas son los terrenos irregulares; los parámetros evaluados son medidos en intervalos de 80m, la red alcanzo una distancia de 805m de cobertura. Para evaluar la sensibilidad de la señal, se ubicó los nodos finales en una quebrada a desniveles de 15m de profundidad donde la vegetación y los árboles, perjudicaron a la señal de comunicación registrando medidas de intensidad de señal recibida RSSI de -126 dBm y relación señal/ruido SNR de -9.25 dB

    Las inversiones extranjeras directas (IED), aunque ligeramente estancadas en la década de los 80, siguen creciendo con rapidez desde los años 90, siendo las empresas transnacionales el principal motor de esa expansión. De esta forma se amplia el campo de la producción transnacionalizada en la economía mundial. Pero la distribución geográfica de los flujos de I.E.D. es muy desigual, siendo sólo 30 países los receptores del 90 por 100 del total acumulado. Esta concentración de la IED tiene su correlato en la concentración de la producción transnacionalizada, también crecientemente concentrada. De ahí que la denominada "globalización", como tendencia a la conversión, por la competencia, de diferentes subsistemas territorializados de valoración en un único sistema que monopolice globalmente la valoración, provoque desigualdades y distanciamientos crecientes en el seno de la comunidad internacional

    Chromosome evolution in Cophomantini (Amphibia, Anura, Hylinae)

    The hylid tribe Cophomantini is a diverse clade of Neotropical treefrogs composed of the genera Aplastodiscus, Boana, Bokermannohyla, Hyloscirtus, and Myersiohyla. The phylogenetic relationships of Cophomantini have been comprehensively reviewed in the literature, providing a suitable framework for the study of chromosome evolution. Employing different banding techniques, we studied the chromosomes of 25 species of Boana and 3 of Hyloscirtus; thus providing, for the first time, data for Hyloscirtus and for 15 species of Boana. Most species showed karyotypes with 2n = 2x = 24 chromosomes; some species of the B. albopunctata group have 2n = 2x = 22, and H. alytolylax has 2n = 2x = 20. Karyotypes are all bi-armed in most species presented, with the exception of H. larinopygion (FN = 46) and H. alytolylax (FN = 38), with karyotypes that have a single pair of small telocentric chromosomes. In most species of Boana, NORs are observed in a single pair of chromosomes, mostly in the small chromosomes, although in some species of the B. albopunctata, B. pulchella, and B. semilineata groups, this marker occurs on the larger pairs 8, 1, and 7, respectively. In Hyloscirtus, NOR position differs in the three studied species: H. alytolylax (4p), H. palmeri (4q), and H. larinopygion (1p). Heterochromatin is a variable marker that could provide valuable evidence, but it would be necesserary to understand the molecular composition of the C-bands that are observed in different species in order to test its putative homology. In H. alytolylax, a centromeric DAPI+ band was observed on one homologue of chromosome pair 2. The band was present in males but absent in females, providing evidence for an XX/XY sex determining system in this species. We review and discuss the importance of the different chromosome markers (NOR position, C-bands, and DAPI/CMA3 patterns) for their impact on the taxonomy and karyotype evolution in Cophomantini

    Marine Biodiversity in the Caribbean: Regional Estimates and Distribution Patterns

    This paper provides an analysis of the distribution patterns of marine biodiversity and summarizes the major activities of the Census of Marine Life program in the Caribbean region. The coastal Caribbean region is a large marine ecosystem (LME) characterized by coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses, but including other environments, such as sandy beaches and rocky shores. These tropical ecosystems incorporate a high diversity of associated flora and fauna, and the nations that border the Caribbean collectively encompass a major global marine biodiversity hot spot. We analyze the state of knowledge of marine biodiversity based on the geographic distribution of georeferenced species records and regional taxonomic lists. A total of 12,046 marine species are reported in this paper for the Caribbean region. These include representatives from 31 animal phyla, two plant phyla, one group of Chromista, and three groups of Protoctista. Sampling effort has been greatest in shallow, nearshore waters, where there is relatively good coverage of species records; offshore and deep environments have been less studied. Additionally, we found that the currently accepted classification of marine ecoregions of the Caribbean did not apply for the benthic distributions of five relatively well known taxonomic groups. Coastal species richness tends to concentrate along the Antillean arc (Cuba to the southernmost Antilles) and the northern coast of South America (Venezuela – Colombia), while no pattern can be observed in the deep sea with the available data. Several factors make it impossible to determine the extent to which these distribution patterns accurately reflect the true situation for marine biodiversity in general: (1) highly localized concentrations of collecting effort and a lack of collecting in many areas and ecosystems, (2) high variability among collecting methods, (3) limited taxonomic expertise for many groups, and (4) differing levels of activity in the study of different taxa

It has been suggested that the C, N and P cycles could become uncoupled under rapid climate change because of the different degrees of control exerted on the supply of these elements by biological and geochemical processes1,2,3,4,5. Climatic controls on biogeochemical cycles are particularly relevant in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid ecosystems (drylands) because their biological activity is mainly driven by water availability6,7,8. The increase in aridity predicted for the twenty-first century in many drylands worldwide9,10,11 may therefore threaten the balance between these cycles, differentially affecting the availability of essential nutrients12,13,14. Here we evaluate how aridity affects the balance between C, N and P in soils collected from 224 dryland sites from all continents except Antarctica. We find a negative effect of aridity on the concentration of soil organic C and total N, but a positive effect on the concentration of inorganic P. Aridity is negatively related to plant cover, which may favour the dominance of physical processes such as rock weathering, a major source of P to ecosystems, over biological processes that provide more C and N, such as litter decomposition12,13,14. Our findings suggest that any predicted increase in aridity with climate change will probably reduce the concentrations of N and C in global drylands, but increase that of P.
